Chapter 13 - § Growing knowledge §

The breeze of the shockwave washed over me. The glasses of the window scattered all over the floor. Luckily, they didn't reach the bed.

But the sound and tremors resonated all over. Kendal who was in deep sleep was woken up by it.

I heard my parents heavy footsteps outside. I guess it wasn't just them who woke up.

As I watched Kendal boggling her eyes, I realised the mess I haven't covered up.

"Oh yeah, evidence first." I snapped out of my gaze and got took a random cloth to wipe the magic circle I drew on the floor.

I closed my books and packed them away. Took the cloth and threw it out the window. Got into the blankets and then coaxed the girl who was still coming to her senses.

Just then, my father barged into the room.

"Atticus, Kendal? Are you kids okay?" He asked worried and came to inspect.

He took a deep breath of relief while holding us in his arms. As he held us, I thought maybe I should reveal it was me.

But, does it really matter? One thing was, I doubt he'd believe it was me. Oh well...

"Dad?" I called to him.

"Yes son?" He looked at us in the eyes.

"What was that?"

"Just an explosion. Some bad beasts have been seen coming out of the forests. It might just be them. But don't worry, I can take them down with no sweat." Je assured us with a smile.

"I know. My father is the strongest there is." I responded.

The old man was good in combat. That's one straight fact. But in the next ten or so years, I'm sure I'll be leagues beyond him. His swordsmanship is great. But he doesn't make use of his magic. He treats them as two separate things.

"Does that mean the training I'd off for today?" I said. He didn't expect that and thought for a moment before nodding.

"Of course. You still need to rest. Go to sleep now okay." He said and tried to tuck us in.

"But it's already morning. Can we stay up? We'll be right here in the room." I said and slid down under the blankets.

My father just laughed and left the room. I could finally take a breather too.

Now looking at my failure to fully manipulate my magic, I saw a flaw.

I trained to control my energy. But I skipped the fundamentals. Control as I release and Manipulation to maintain stability. Also, I can't just use pure energy for my power.

I should have taken lessons on magic formulas. That way I can Manipulate the information that makes up magic circles.that would boost my power and other various aspects of my abilities.

"Damn it all. Why did I have I have to leap before I think. This is all to troublesome." I said to myself. To an extent, I couldn't say I knew everything.

But the flaws I made were a little foolish. I was only focused on gaining power. And I was ready to skip some steps to get that done.

"Big brother? Can you read me the book? It's not time to eat or bath yet. And I'm... bored." Kendal shook me a little.

Her presence pulled me out of my thoughts.

"Of course. Let me see the book. I'll continue from the end point of last time, okay?" She sat beside me and rested her head on my shoulder.

I read to her a few chapters and it was time for our bath. Then we followed the usual morning routines like usual. My father and a few other people went hunting for said beasts.

And I gained myself a few days of rest. They'd probably be gone for about four or five days on hunting.

I overhead my mother talking to one of the people that came to relay the message. Apparently, the beast were already being attracted to something in the direction of our Radars territory.

It didn't matter to me. But I did really get why they'd come this way.

Also, the number of beasts coming from the Northern continents were increasing drastically.

Nothing out of the ordinary had happened. But that might be a sign to something. Anyway, best of the mages we're also gathering to that part of the world. Adventurers and those with great skills flocked to the North.

Only soldiers and a few others stayed in their Continents. I guess governments was kind of failing to control anything.

"Well, I should go and resume my studies. I still need to learn magic formula Manipulation." I said as I left the listening corner.

I went to my room and there I dived into the books I had.

Magic formula Manipulation. A form or way of manipulating magic to achieve results by altering runes or information in a magic circle.

This can be achieved by first learning the runes themselves. Then minimise the sizes and gather them. Magic particles automatically fill the runes to produce the wanted results.

And that's how we come to have what we call spells.

I took a piece of chalk and wrote a rune on the ground.

"Wait a minute. What if I blow up my entire room?" It dawned on me that I still lack knowledge.

I drew it on a piece of paper and sent my magic into the rune.

"Flare up, ." I uttered. The rune glowed and the paper burnt up. I kept practicing it over and over. Until I managed to draw it mid air.

The success rate of magic practice was reached. I can manipulate simple elements. Fire, air, water, earth, light and darkness. Though the last two drain a bit too much out of me.

Now I just need to take it up a notch. If I can Manipulate all elements at once, I'll say I have gained something worth praise.

Just like that, I engrossed myself in my books again. Until evening, I learnt all I can.
