Chapter 10 - Side Quest

[Ding!]

Ash jolted by the sudden notification of the system.

"What's wrong? Are you alright?"

Demittry asked noticing Ash's action.

"Yes, I'm fine. It's just hiccup."

Ash hurriedly opens the SNT and to his surprise, the system gave him something he didn't expect.

[Congratulations for unlocking a Side Quest – "One Step Closer to the Past".]

[Progress: 1/10]

"Side Quest? What's with this quest? Can you please explain?"

[The system advise you not to ask questions or explanations all the time, and try to figure things out yourself.]

Ash was flabbergasted as he did not expect the system to actually deny his orders, and on top of that, it advices him to start figuring things out himself.

"Ha! Now you're showing your true colors, you always say that you will guide me throughout this life, but it turns out you're actually not! You should've told me earlier that this thing would happen, so that I won't depend on you!"

[Ash don't get me wrong. What I am trying to say is that, there will be times when I cannot help you with certain things because of the restrictions you are having right now or in the future. And if I continue to help you at the very beginning of your journey, then you will eventually be more dependent on me and the system rather than yourself, and it will eventually hinder your growth potential. So when I advise you to figure things yourself, that doesn't mean I am abandoning or turning back on my words. It only means that I want your talents and potentials to bloom without depending too much on me.]

"Now you're talking like a real human. I don't really know if you are an A.I or another person stuck in my head. Anyways, I understand your point, and you are definitely correct. Relying too much on the system will actually do no good on me in the long run. Thank you for clearing my mind."

[I apologize for saying it wrongfully. And thank you for understanding.]

"Just to be clear, you are not human are you?"

[Buzz!]

[The user's current level is too low to get this information. Try again later.]

"There it is, the usual response for asking simple questions."

After having a very deep conversation with the system, Ash relationship to it grew deeper as if he felt that the system is his older brother or something. However, it didn't last long, as the annoying response of the system irritates Ash again.

"I thought we are actually having a connection there but I gues I'm wrong. You're an annoying piece of shit who lacks compassion to its user!"

Now having a bad temper, Ash had a grumpy face reading the notification when he finally reads the whole notification.

"I can get points as the side quest progesses? How convenient, haha!"

All of Ash's frustrations and anger vanished into thin air after seeing the huge points that he received.

[Yes, the user can also get points by doing the side quest.]

"I can see that, I'm not blind! I actually don't want to hear anything from you at this moment so kindly shut your mouth for awhile."

[...]

Scolding the system, Ash finally snapped and his veins could be seen from his forehead. However, knowing that he couldn't do anything at his current level, Ash just shuts his mouth as he sighed deeply.

Ash asked Demittry more questions in order to forget his argument with the system.

"What do you mean my parents are the great examples? Were they banished from the Capital? What was the reason for their banishment?"

Curiously asking, Ash move closer to Demittry to listen to his story carefully.

Standing from his seat, Demittry walked towards his tent before answering.

"Let's talk about it tomorrow, Ash. I'm tired from all the hopping I did today."

Knowing that Ash would probably ask so many more questions after, Demittry chose to leave the story for tomorrow.

Demittry leave Ash behind in front of the fire.

"What? Already? Can't you tell me a bit more of the story? Even just a little bit more? I'm curious, come one Demittry."

Ash pleaded to Demittry but eventually failed as Demittry immediately fell asleep after lying inside his tent .

"Zzzz."

"Wow! He fell asleep really fast! If I had that kind of talent in my past life, I would totally maximize it all the time."

[The user is not only dumb, but persistently dumb.]

Teasing the frustrated Ash, the system mocks its user.

"This motherfucking system who likes to yap all the time. What part of me not wanting to hear anything from you did you not understand? And if you have nothing useful to say, please shut your fucking mouth or whatever it is that your using to talk!? You've been an ear-sore all day!!"

[…]

"That's right! Shut your mouth and let me have peace at least once in a while!"

Ash was panting as he head inside his tent and went to sleep in frustration.

Ash lie down in a hard floor and thought about his day.

"This day is like a rollercoaster ride. I died, transmigrated in a dead body, almost got myself killed, and I... I killed so many people today. But... Why do I feel like it was nothing? Killing them actually feels like normal to me. How can that be..."

Unable to keep up with his thoughts, Ash duly dozed off from exhaustion.

The next day, Ash was woken up by Demittry.

"Ash, let's go. We still have a long way to go."

Demittry takes off the tent that he made without Ash's approval.

"Yawn. What is it Demittry? Where moving already? It's like, 5 in the morning. We're not having breakfast before leaving?"

Streching his body, Ash lifted his body from lying.

"We ate the last piece of meat last night. So, right now, we're gonna have to hunt for an edible monsters in the forest."

Demittry said as he put the cloth inside his storage.

"Sounds great!"

Jumping from his excitement, Ash readied himself to leap through the forest.
