One hand to my chest, I tried to steady my breath. I picked up the keys and slowly moved to the end of the bed.
Before me was a drawer by the bed. It was so well-hidden that if I hadn't seen her open it, I wouldn't have known anything of that nature was there.
I tried to remain discreet and held my breath. After opening the drawer, I looked up, they were still sound asleep. Carefully, I took out the envelope. I didn't know what it contained, but I was certain I needed to know why Mum felt at ease when she took it out of that drawer.
Without wasting another moment, I locked the drawer, slowly placed the keys back, and moved quietly toward the door.
Then I heard a sneeze behind me, and I froze again, my chest racing. What was the worst that could happen?
But when I turned, Mum had simply shifted to the other side of the large bed, now wrapped around Dad.
I exhaled briefly and continued toward the door. I slowly unlocked it and stepped out, shutting it behind me.
