Chapter 10 - Excuses/Uniform

Walking over to the elevator, I pressed the button for floor 6. This past week had been so busy I didn't even have time to go to Teal Coffee; I missed it. The elevator took me down, and I speed-walked over to my favorite coffee shop. When I got there, I pushed open the door and was greeted by the delicious smell of hot coffee.

The shop had a few people inside, but there was still a seat open by the window, so I ended up sitting there.

After waiting for about a minute, I heard a soft voice calling for me, "Excuse me, sir." I looked towards it, and that's when I saw a familiar face. It was Alyse, the same pretty girl who asked why I looked at the hole so intensely, the same pretty girl who I swapped numbers with last week. I was in shock, but before she said anything else, 1,000 excuses slipped out of my mouth extremely fast.

"I'm so sorry I never called you, Alyse. Last week was insane, and I just never found the time. I'm so, so sorry." After I said this, I realized how bad it sounded, and I winced, completely expecting her to say something like, "How could you jerk! I never want to see you again!" But instead, I heard an adorable laugh come from her.

"Ha ha! You were talking so quickly I could hardly understand what you were saying. But if this is about you not calling me, don't worry. I was really busy this week, so I didn't really have time to chat. More importantly, what would you like to order?" She smiled at me and readied her pen over her notebook. I ordered my usual, and she walked away.

I sat in my chair shocked over what just happened while I waited for my coffee. After about ten minutes of waiting, Alyse came back and put my cup of coffee down on the table. When she was about to walk away, I mustered up my courage and called out to her. "Um, Alyse!" She turned back towards me and answered, "Yes."

When she turned back and looked at me, I closely examined her face. Her soft tan skin, her small lips, her silky brown hair, and her large green eyes; this girl was really beautiful. "I was wondering if you'd like to go out with me on Thursday, like on a date."

There was a small pause, and I gulped, anticipating her answer. Then she slightly blushed before answering, "Sure." A massive wave of relief washed over me. "Great! I don't know where we're going yet, but I'll text you the details, okay?" Alyse smiled and nodded at me before getting called over by another person in the cafe. She waved goodbye to me and walked off.

After I drank my coffee, I walked back to my apartment, and it was around 1:25 am when I got home. So, I took a quick shower, brushed my teeth, set my alarm for 7:00 in the morning, and went to bed.

Later that morning, I was awoken by the alarm I had set, so reluctantly, I got up from the floor and walked over to the kitchen where I decided to make some eggs. While I did that, I called Tony, letting him know I wouldn't be coming into work for the rest of the week. He was pissed, as I told him on such short notice, but it is what it is. When my eggs were done, I put them on a plate and shoveled them into my mouth.

After that, I went to the bathroom and started brushing my teeth, until I heard my doorbell ring. I quickly spit into the sink and yelled at the door, "Iain, you can come in, but give me a second to get changed!" Then I heard the door creak open. I wiped off my mouth and left the bathroom to see Iain standing in my doorframe; however, today he was wearing his police uniform instead of a suit, and he was holding something. "Eve, I brought this for you, wear it."

In his hands was a police uniform. The jacket of the uniform was completely red, and the entire collar had a white outline. There were also white lines that went across the shoulders and ran down the sleeves of the uniform. The pants were just plain white and were folded under the jacket. On top of the uniform laid a belt and a white armband. Usually, the armband would have a number on it, but mine just had an "A" on it.

Apparently, I had a nasty look on my face, so Iain reassured me. "Don't worry, this doesn't mean that you're an officer or anything; it's just nice to have. You're going to be meeting the rest of my men today, so I'd want you to at least have the uniform on."

After he explained, I asked Iain one more thing. "What does the "A" stand for exactly?" "Oh, that." A big smile came across Iain's face. "Cool, huh? I just created it. The "A" stands for "Assistance." Basically, if there's anybody who's NOT an officer who we'd like to assist us, we'd give them this armband. I'm a genius, huh!" Iain walked up to me and shoved the clothes into my arms. "Put them on, pleaseeee." I sighed and took the clothes out of his hands for the sole reason that it would be strange if I was the only one not wearing a uniform. Then after shooing Iain out I began to change.
