Chapter 1 - 1 The Northern Kingdom

Early morning, aboard a horse-drawn carriage on the way to the Kingdom of Nothredam.

"Hmm... where should I begin the story? Ah, maybe here. I was fast asleep when a sudden flash of light appeared. Next thing I knew, I was standing in front of a king's throne. Long story short, I was told I had been summoned to become a hero. They said I possessed extraordinary mana and was expected to one day defeat the Demon King.

After that, I started learning how to use magic—chanting spells, memorizing incantations... Honestly, it was all really boring. But I guess it paid off. I mastered magic in just three days."

"Three days? You're making that up."

"Hey, I'm serious! The very next day, they sent me straight to the battlefield. I wiped out Demon King's troops left and right. At one point, I even took out an entire company in a single strike."

"I heard about that. Rumor has it the top brass all gathered because of you."

"See? Crazy, right?"

"You're getting cocky. Go on with the story."

"The news spread like wildfire throughout the kingdom. People started calling me a hero. But then, everything changed during the battle at Zaitsya. That's where I met you—not just a demon, but a graceful, beautiful vampire."

"Please stop. That's disgusting," Clarissa gave me a look of utter revulsion.

"Back then, a lot of soldiers hated you. Can't blame them—you're a rare demon species. And on top of that, you were one of the Demon King's top seven officers. When I saw them about to hurt you, I lost it. I told them to stop, but they didn't listen. So... I had no choice. I killed them all. If I remember right, it was a dozen of them."

"After that, I was dragged in front of the king to answer for my actions. That old geezer had the nerve to say what those soldiers did was completely justified. If that's justice, how are we any better than demons? In the end, he sentenced me to death."

"Then how are you still alive?"

"Negotiation, of course. I asked the old man to just seal my mana instead. The reason? So I wouldn't be a threat to them anymore. And here I am—technically free, but exiled to the farthest kingdom in the north."

"You're kind of insane, you know that? In this world, magic is everything. The more mana you have, the closer you are to becoming nobility."

"Clarissa, do you know what the purple villain in that movie I watched last month said?"

"Are you stupid or something? Of course not! And what even is a movie?" Clarissa was clearly annoyed.

"He said, 'You should've gone for the head.' Anyway, I'm a smart kid, okay? Back in my world, they called me a prodigy. That's why my brain is way more valuable than that lame magic."

"Alright then, Mr. Prodigy. How do you plan to prove that?"

"I—I won the national science olympiad four times. Twice in middle school, and twice in high school. Not local—national, mind you."

"Olympiad? I have no idea what that is. Besides, that only matters in your world. I'm asking about proof here."

Ugh. Beautiful face, sword-like tongue.

"Just admit it. Without magic, you're nothing," Clarissa said with a mocking tone.

"I'll show you. One day, science will rule this world. Just wait and see."

Clarissa responded with a smug smile.

"By the way, Mr. Elf, how much longer until we reach Nothredam?" I asked the coachman up front, who happened to be an elf.

"Just call me Charles. It'll take around 35 days. Not counting rest stops, of course."

"Wh—what?! That long?" I said in disbelief.

"What's the problem? Thirty-five days is actually pretty quick," Clarissa chimed in.

"Sigh..." I sighed deeply.

"Back in my world, we had this thing called a train. A scientific marvel. It turned hours into minutes, days into hours, and weeks into mere days."

"WHAAAT?! Something like that actually exists?" Charles nearly twisted around in shock.

"Of course. We even had something more amazing. We called it an airplane. That same 35-day journey? It'd take just a few hours with one of those."

"Incredible... but can we even build something like that here?" Clarissa asked, genuinely curious.

"Technically, yes. But only if you've already entered the industrial revolution. Tch... This world hasn't even reached the Renaissance yet. So yeah, good luck with that. I hope you live long enough to see it."

"Renaissance? Industrial revolution? What are those?" Charles asked.

"Oh, they're basically time periods. The Renaissance was a time of rebirth—art, science, literature all blossomed. From what I've observed, this world hasn't even hit that stage."

"And how can you be so sure?" Clarissa asked.

"Yeah," Charles added. "We already have magical items like carriages and huge castles like the one in Heden."

"That's not enough. This world is still ruled by the Order Church. Knowledge and thought must follow the Church's doctrine. If not, you're branded a heretic."

"You've got a point there. Luckily, I'm not part of the Order, so I can speak freely," Charles chuckled.

"And what about the industrial revolution?" Clarissa asked again.

"Oh, that's the era where machines replaced humans and animals for labor."

"Machines?" they both echoed.

"Yeah. Tools that make life easier. With machines, you don't have to till the land manually. With machines, you can travel faster than ever."

"Amazing! So, when are you going to make all that happen, Master Akira?" Charles asked, clearly impressed.

"Hahaha... First, let's make it to Nothredam."

"Okay sir."
