Chapter 10 - His birthday made me special

🍫 A Chocolate More Than Sweet 🍫

— A Story of Unexpected Bonds and Gentle Surprises —

The day had begun like any other, warm sunlight streaming through half-drawn curtains, the sleepy hum of the neighborhood waking slowly. But even as I got dressed for school, my mind was still replaying the moment from yesterday — the way he looked, pale and silent, the soft exchange of a water bottle, and the gratitude in his eyes.

I didn't expect anything more to come from that. It was just a gesture. A quiet act of kindness.

But sometimes, the smallest things ripple the farthest.

Later that same day, just as the sun was beginning its descent and shadows stretched lazily across the school corridors, I was gathering my books to leave when I heard a soft voice behind me.

"Hey…"

I turned. It was him.

In his hand, he held out my water bottle — now empty and warm from the afternoon sun. But more than that, his face carried something that I hadn't seen the day before: a genuine, gentle smile. The kind that reaches the eyes.

"Thank you… really," he said, softly, with a sincerity that made my chest flutter.

I smiled back, trying to play it cool, though my heart was having its own little celebration. "Take care of yourself, okay?" I said with a slight frown, trying not to sound too concerned.

He nodded, thanked me again, and with a small wave, turned toward his house.

It should've ended there. But life — or fate — had other plans.

🌙

The next morning, the weather seemed oddly fitting for my mood. Gray clouds loomed over the sky, and I walked to class with a sadness I couldn't quite name. Maybe it was just one of those days. I kept my head down, quietly finding my seat, trying to blend in with the hum of the room.

But then, something unexpected happened.

Just as I sat down, someone appeared in front of me.

It was him.

Without saying a word, he held out a small, perfectly wrapped chocolate — dark brown paper with a gold ribbon. The kind that looked special.

I blinked, completely taken aback. "Wha—?"

He just smiled, shyly this time, and placed the chocolate in my hand. Then, without another word, he walked over to his group of friends, as though nothing had happened.

I sat there, stunned, staring at the tiny treasure in my palm. My cheeks burned, and a warmth spread through my chest that had nothing to do with the weather.

As I looked around, others were receiving small chocolates too, and slowly, the room began to buzz with excitement.

That's when I heard someone whisper, "It's his birthday today!"

I turned to look at him. And just then, the entire class began singing in chorus — a joyful, slightly off-key rendition of the birthday song. He looked embarrassed but happy, and his smile only grew wider.

Then came something no one expected.

He began to distribute chocolates — neatly wrapped in colorful paper bags.

Everyone clapped and cheered as he walked desk to desk, giving each student a bag.

Then he neared my desk.

I looked down at the chocolate he'd already given me, quietly assuming he would pass me by. After all, he'd already shared something personal with me — more than enough.

But he didn't pass me.

Instead, he paused.

With the softest smile, he reached into his bag and pulled out something that made my breath hitch — a larger, beautifully wrapped box of chocolates. Not like the others. This one looked imported, expensive. Special.

For me?

He placed it gently on my desk without saying a word. Just a look. A moment.

That's when the classroom erupted into whispers.

"Woah, did you see that?"

"He gave her a different one!"

"Oooooh!" some teased in sing-song voices.

His friends began to nudge him, grinning, while others looked between us with wide eyes and curious smiles.

I didn't know what to say. My cheeks were on fire, my fingers fumbled with the ribbon on the box, and my heart felt like it was tap dancing inside my chest.

He didn't explain himself. He didn't need to.

Some things — the best things — are understood in silence.

—

That day, I didn't just walk home.

I floated.

With a chocolate box in my hands, and something warmer blooming in my heart.

And maybe, just maybe… this was the beginning of something more.
