Chapter 9 - Unusual day

A Sip of Kindness

It had been an ordinary week, except for one unexpected moment that lingered in my thoughts like the gentle scent of jasmine on a summer evening. It was a small thing, really — a moment that passed quickly but managed to stay with me.

I had been quite impressed by it.

It wasn't something grand or loud. No sweeping gestures or booming declarations. Just a simple moment that spoke louder than anything else could.

The next day, as the morning sun spilled through the classroom windows and bathed the wooden floors in golden light, I found myself still thinking about it. My mind replayed that one scene, quietly, over and over.

When I walked into school, everything felt like any other day. The air buzzed with the usual chatter, and students bustled through the halls with backpacks slung over tired shoulders. But then — something caught my eye.

There he was.

He stood just outside the classroom, leaning gently against the corridor wall. His hair looked slightly disheveled, and he wasn't wearing that familiar easy smile that usually lit up his face. I paused for a second, heart oddly fluttering — not because I expected anything — but because it felt strange to see him there. Waiting. Quietly.

For a moment, I thought he was waiting for someone… and then I remembered — his best friend.

I walked right past him, unnoticed. It felt strange. Usually, even in the crowded hallways, our eyes would meet for a fleeting second. Not today. He didn't even look up.

Inside the classroom, the atmosphere felt… off. Like the wind had changed direction.

He finally walked in after a while, slower than usual. His shoulders were hunched. His face was pale. Something wasn't right.

I kept glancing at him from the corner of my eye. He didn't speak. He didn't smile. He didn't even open his notebook, which, for him, was highly unusual. He simply stared at the desk in front of him, lost in some far-off place.

My curiosity — and worry — got the better of me.

During break, I found the courage to gently ask his friend, "Hey… is he okay?"

His friend sighed softly and whispered, "He's running a fever. Didn't want to stay home… had something he didn't want to miss."

My heart tightened. That explained the pale face. The tired eyes. The silence.

I looked over at him again, and something in me just… moved.

Maybe it was sympathy. Maybe it was something I didn't yet have a name for. But in that moment, I knew I wanted to do something — anything — to make him feel a little better.

So, I quietly got up from my seat, approached the teacher's desk, and whispered, "May I go drink some water?"

She nodded without question, and I stepped out into the hallway — not to the water fountain, but instead to the place where my bag hung quietly on a hook. I retrieved my water bottle, still cool from the morning, and held it tightly.

Returning to the classroom, I walked slowly toward his desk, heart pounding like a quiet drum. I didn't say anything. I just placed the bottle gently on the edge of his table.

He looked up, surprised.

Our eyes met — just for a second — and I offered him a small, quiet smile. No words were needed. He understood.

Then, without waiting for a thank you, I returned to my seat, cheeks warm, heart fluttering.

He drank the water.

And when he placed the bottle back on the desk beside him, I noticed something had changed.

He wasn't smiling yet. But his shoulders didn't seem as heavy. His eyes weren't as lost. And somehow, between the stillness and silence of that day, a quiet understanding had bloomed between us — tender and unspoken.

Just a sip of kindness. But sometimes, that's all it takes to start something beautiful.
