Synopsis
LAPD captain Natasha has always prided herself on her independence, refusing to let anyone else shoulder her burdens-especially when it comes to her most challenging case yet. But as the investigation stalls and the pressure mounts, a close friend urges Natasha to put her trust in someone new: Detective Marrison, a brilliant yet unconventional investigator with a reputation for solving the unsolvable. Reluctantly, Natasha agrees, and as she and Marrison begin to work side by side, a tentative partnership forms. What starts as mutual respect for each other's skills soon deepens into something more. As they unravel the tangled threads of the case, Natasha and Marrison find themselves drawn together by the very secrets they’re trying to uncover. With each breakthrough and setback, their trust and connection grow, forcing Natasha to confront not only the mysteries of the case-but the guarded walls around her own heart. Will Natasha let herself rely on Marrison, both as a detective and as something more? Or will the dangers of the case-and her own fears-keep them apart?

Chapter 1 - Prologue

"BREAKING NEWS: Homicide Investigation Underway After Fatal Apartment Attack in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA – Authorities have launched a manhunt following a deadly incident late Thursday night in a small apartment complex in East Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, two individuals were found deceased at the scene, while three others managed to escape and are now in stable condition.

Investigators believe the attack may not have been random and are actively searching for a suspect who remains at large.

Residents in the area are urged to remain cautious and report any relevant information to the LAPD. The investigation is ongoing."

The voice from the news caught the attention of two people in the room. Suddenly, the sound from the television cut off when someone pressed the off button on the remote.

"Are these murderers just attention seekers or what? We just wrapped up a case yesterday, and now there's already a new report?" said a girl with a hint of annoyance as she lazily tossed the remote she had been holding.

"Whether they're seeking attention or not, we still get the report anyway, Li. It's part of our job as police officers..." replied a girl with long black hair and glasses perched on her nose.

Cordelia was about to respond to her colleague and best friend, but the sound of footsteps made her hold her tongue.

Just as she turned around, a rolled-up newspaper suddenly hit both their heads.

"You two are chatting instead of working."

"Ow! Don't hit my head too, Nat," Naomi laughed at Ordelia's misfortune.

Meanwhile, Natasha — the one who had whacked Ordelia — walked off toward her private office, leaving Ordelia, Yessie, and Naomi behind.

"Your friend is seriously annoying!" Ordelia grumbled.

"She's your friend too, Li… Anyway, we'll probably get new instructions soon from Natasha or her dad. So we better head back to our desks before Natasha really loses it," Yessie suggested as she made her way to her workstation. She walked like a frightened child, which made Naomi burst out laughing again.

Inside Natasha's private office, stacks of files cluttered her desk. The room had a monochrome black-and-white theme, with long cabinets filled with both old and new files, and two sofas flanking a coffee table in the center of the room.

Natasha approached her desk to retrieve the documents Naomi had given her. Slowly, she read through the files as she made her way to her favorite sofa and sat down.

After reviewing the documents, Natasha got up and began organizing the rest of the files on her desk.

In the middle of her task, a black folder caught her attention. Just as she was about to touch it, someone knocked on the door.

"Come in," Natasha commanded, as someone slowly pushed the door open.

"What is it, Mi?" Natasha asked while continuing to tidy up her paperwork, momentarily forgetting about the black folder that had piqued her curiosity.

"Your dad's calling for you, Nat… He said to meet in the conference room," said Naomi as she entered her best friend and captain's private office.

Natasha furrowed her brows. "Meeting? Meeting about what?"

"Probably about the new case. We just saw the news on TV. And I think he got the report and orders to take it on," Naomi explained, now seated on the sofa.

"Alright, you guys go ahead. I'll catch up," Natasha replied.

Naomi nodded and left the room to gather Ordelia and Yessie and head to the meeting room.
