LAURIE LERNER: Mario Spreglio [?] says he's convinced Marilyn Monroe did not commit suicide but was murdered because she was about to tell what she knew about CIA-backed attempts to kill Castro. Spreglio, who spent more than a decade investiga- ting the death, says recently demoted LA County Coroner Thomas Naguchi [?] ignored evidence pointing to murder when he conducted the autopsy in 1962. MARLO SPREGLIO: There is a diary that was last seen in the coroner's office on the date of Marilyn Monroe's death. The following day it just disappeared and it was stricken off the inventory. It makes a lot of references to the Kennedys and people involved in what we believe to be a murder-coverup. LERNER: Thursday marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the sex goddess, and Spreglio plans to hold a news conference on Wednesday demanding that the case be reopened. SPREGLIO: When I first entered the case approximately ten years ago, I believed that Marilyn Monroe did, in fact, 'commit suicide. But since my lengthy investigation, I determined beyond all reasonable doubt that Marilyn Monroe was murdered and did not commit suicide. District Attorney John Van de Kamp made the disclosure shortly' before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors -unanimously passed a motion requesting an inves- tigation. The board cited allegations by a former coroner's aide that he was co- erced into signing the death certif- icate for the movie star and that Monroe's diary had mysteriously dis- appeared from the coroner's office. "We should look into allegations made in a series of New York Post articles concerning the. death by drugs of the actress in her hillside home in West Los Angeles," Super.. visor Mike Antonovich :said. Van de Kamp issued a statement saying he_ alreadyhad_di_-ected his office to review reports of Monroe's Aug. 5, 1962, death, which was ruled a suicide. "Early last week, as news accounts on both the East and West coasts raised questions about Miss Monroe's death 20 years ago," he said, "I asked assistant district attor- ney Mike Carroll to gather all rele- vant materials and reports in an at- tempt to put this information into some kind of context. THE WASHINGTON POST 11 August 1982 "Since former district attorney William McKesson apparently never opened an investigation in the Mon- roe death, we had no files of our own. We are in the process now of `` reviewing both the news accounts and official police reports on her death in order to see,.what further:.., ? action may be necessary, if any!-: The supervisors' motion asked the die iict attorney to refer ~tne''matter - to the grand jury "if any or all charges-are substantiated." . "Within .recent days various news accounts have highlighted alleged ir- regularities in the handling of the coroner's investigation into the death of Marilyn 'Monroe,' then motion said.. - _, ..., "Specific news accounts have quoted former coroner's investigator Lionel Grandison, who stated that one, he was coerced into signing Marilyn Monroe's death certificate; two, part of the evidence collected, specifically Marilyn Monroe's diary, was missing from the coroner's office two days after it was brought in; and three; the ' coroner's . investigation into Marilyn Monroe's-death was in- complete." Both the New -York Post and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner have run articles on new questions about Monroe's death... ' L st week shortly before the 20th anniversary of Monroe's death, a ri- va investigator o e -a reward for the -actress:-red di my, i it rove his eo she was ,m e a 'dissident faction of the UW to rotect madi re_I veale to her-by-Robert Kennedy. - Investivator Milo S ri lio claims Monroe threatened to reveal CIA --p ots to kill Cuban resident Fide Castro after Kennedy, then attorney Renerai, refused to marry her, r. Thomas Noguchi, who was de- moted this spring from coroner to .autopsy surgeon, performed the au- topsy on Monroe and concluded that she committed suicide at home by a drug overdose. His attorney, Godfrey Isaac; said Noguchi would have no comment because he is in the midst of a civil service battle to regain his former post. Van de Kamp told ii news confer- ence he expects -the "threshold inqui- ry" to take about'10 days before of- ficials determine if'a'YInll-scale -aim- inal investigation' is warranted. . He said the probe would consist of reviewing ,official records and ques- tioning some of the individuals quoted in recent mews accounts to determine the "veracity' of their statements. * ,. He said an exhumation of Mon- .roe's body would only come "quite a ways down the line," if at all.' Coroner's spokesman Bill Gold said Grandison was a coroner's aide whose duties were mostly clerical, and was not an investigator, as the supervisors identified him. ' Gold also said Grandison's alle- gations about coercion and the miss- ing diary were first made in an in. . terview with the National Enquirer in 1979. Playwright Arthur Mii ler, who had been married to Monroe, said today that -he ;coiildn't comment on any reopening of the case because he has nothing to add `to_ what already ~,- is known. ? ,!.! Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/01 : CIA-RDP90-00552R000201040040-2 ARTICLE A_`';.' F:'.D ON PAGE - By Ronald,_ Yates Cnicego Tribune Press Service CHICAGO TRIBUNE 6 AUGUST 1982 Mystery still liii Qit: Marilyn Mbnr~ LOS ANGELES-Ever since Marilyn Monroe's nude body was found sprawled on the bed of her fashionable home 20 years ago in. Brentwood,. Calif:, there .have been questions'-...* Did she .really-die of a ? self-ingested vverdose.of barblttarates;,as'stated in the coroner's official report?. Or was she murdered, injected.with"the lethal drugs against her-will;?as severab-investigators have since insisted? Wednesday, the 20th anniversary of the death of Hollywood's platinum blond sex symbol, -a''Los ;Angeles private inves- tigator-who has spent more than a de- cade probing the case said the answers are in Marilyn Monroe's so-called "red" diary, missing since her body was ex- amined in the Los Angeles :.-coroner's office. "THIS DIARY names names," said Milo Speriglio, director of the 76-year-old Nick Harris detective :agency in Van Nuys, Calif. "It may tell us who killed Marilyn Monroe. Speriglio is so confident the diary con- tains incriminating murder evidence that he is offering a $10,000'reward for it. "We know it still exists," said Sperig- lio, who also has demanded that au= thorities reopen the Monroe case and bold an inquest. "I got acall from a New York attorney who told me his client had the book, but would turn it over only to a living blood relative of Miss Monroe's." Monroe's-.only;.living .. relative .is her tnother, who has spent the last several years as a patient in a mental institution,. Speriglio said. There is also a half-sister.' SEVERAL BOOKS written after Mon roe's death have linked her romantically with both former President John F. Ken- nedy and one of his brothers, the late U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy. According to Speriglio, the missing diary details those affairs and also con- tains information about a CIA plot to kill Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. "Miss Monroe was murdered to keep her from talking about her relationship with the Kennedy brothers, the CIA plot and her association with certain San: Diego Mafia figures," Speriglio said. . Just who may have murdered Monroe is still a matter of conjecture and the wide range of theories have kept the public supplied with an almost inexhaust- ible flow of biographies and counter- biographies. One theory is that Kennedy loyalists in ; the Department of Justice or the Central Intelligence Agency killed Monroe with a lethal dose of barbiturates in order to protect the Kennedy brothers from, scandal. WRITER TONY Sciacca, in his 1976 book "Who Killed Marilyn?" insists that neither Robert nor J.F.K. was involved. or knew anything about the murder al- legedly committed on their behalf. Robert Slatzer, another .writer and close friend of the actress, said in. an earlier book that Monroe had been upset over Robert Kennedy's attempts to break off their alleged affair and was angry; because she couldn't reach the then attor- ,ney general at the Justice Department. 'If he (Robert Kennedy) keeps avoiding' me, I might just call a press conference and tell them about it .. . and my' future plans," Slatzer said Mon- roe told him a few days before her death. Wednesday, the 20th anniversary of the death of Hollywood's platinum blond sex symbol, -a -Los Angeles private inves- tigator- who has spent more than a de- cade probing the case said the answers are in Marilyn Monroe's so-called "red" diary, missing since her body was ex- amined in the Los Angeles:.-coroner's office. "Miss Monroe was murdered to keep her from talking about her relationship with the Kennedy brothers, the CIA plot; and her association with certain San Diego Mafia figures," Speriglio said. Just who may have murdered Monroe is still a matter of conjecture and the wide range of theories have kept the public supplied with an almost inexhaust- ible flow of biographies and counter- biographies. .One theory is that Kennedy loyalists in. the Department of justice or the Central Intelligence Agency killed Monroe with a lethal dose of barbiturates in order to protect the Kennedy brothers from . scandal. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/16: CIA-RDP90-00552R000404360002-4 REUTERS 30 AUGUST 1982 Ro;iald Clarke LOS A^JGELES Twenty years after she died, Marilyn Monroe is still allowed no peace. Rewards of up to $100,000 have been offered for her so-called red diary, a private detective believes she was killed by a dissident faction of the CIA and a former coroner's aide claims he was coerced into signing hdr death certificate. Robert Slatzer, author of "The Life and Curious Death of Marilyn Conroe," published in 1974, told reporters that in the last summer of her life miss Monroe was having an affair with Senator Kennedy. He said Miss Monroe showed him her diary, which included details GF her relationship with Kennedy, who was then U.S. attorney general, and information about the CIA. Slatzer said Kennedy broke off his relationship with Miss Monroe two wee;cs before her death. "This was a woman who couldn't take rejection," Slatzer said. He said an the night before she died she told him by telephone if she did not hear from Kennedy soon she would call a press conference "and blow the lid." Michael Speriglio, a member of a leading Los Angeles private detective agency who said he had been investigating Miss Monroe's for 10 years, offered a $'JJ,OOO reward for the diary. He said he had evidence, which he did not specify, th:3t the diary included entries of Kennedy telling Miss Monroe of a CIA plot to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro. He told a press conference he had uncovered through sources a plot organized by the CIA to kidnap Miss Monroe and take her to a "safe house" in Virginia, where the CIA has its headquarters. "The faction intended to make known later Miss Monroe had suffered a nervous breakdown so no one would accept what she said," Speriglio said. But, he said, he believed what he called a dissident CI r g Miss Monroe first and murdered her. Dr. Theodore Curphey, who was Los Angeles coroner when Miss Monroe died, has disputed claims she was murdered. "These stories have circulated for years," he said. "There is no point to them." A CIA spokesman dismissed the murder claims as false and absurd. But the Monroe mystique continues. E`-URET Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/16: CIA-RDP90-00552R000404360002-4

Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/01: CIA-RDP90-00552R000201040037-6 Reuters i August 26, 1982' ILOS AUSFLES 'By Ronald Clarke, -A former coroner's aide who-claims he was forced to sign Marilyn Monroe's death cei?tificate said today a file an the actress was altered and that her diary disappeared from a safe. Lionel Grandison told a news conference he leafed through the diary and it contained references to a plot to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro and also to President John F. Kennedy and to Senator Robert Kennedy. He gave no details. Miss Monroe died 20 years ago aged 36 of what the coroner's office said then was a self-induced overdose of barbiturates. Rewards of up to $100,000 were offered recently for the diary. Private detective Milo Speriglio said he had evidence the diary included entries saying that Robert Kennedy told Miss Monroe of a CIA plot to kill Castro. Speriglio said he believed a dissident CIA faction murdered Miss Monroe before she could reveal the plot. "The diary was put in a safe one day, and when we opened the safe the next day, it was gone," Grandison said. He said in the days following the discovery of Miss Monroe's body in her Los Angles home, people he believed were from the CIA came to the coroner's office. "Three or four people came in to investigate Marilyn's file. You can tell the. difference between a police office and a heavyweight," said Grandison, now an aC'vertising executive. Asked about his previous claim he was coerced into signing the death certificate,- he said he was ordered to sign it and it was implied that if he did not he would be dismissed. He said he was reluctant to sign because of the absence of a report from the coroner's suicide investigators and of reports normally available for Inspection. He claitcd the file on Miss Monroe was altered several times and a diagram Of her body was renoved from the file. Graudis.on said his arrest six months after Miss Monroe died on a charge o stealing a credit card may have been arranged. "I was asking too many questions," he said. The Los A:;geles district attorney's office announced two weeks ago it was trying to establish the chain of events in the last 24 hours of Miss Mon roe's life. The county Board of Supervisors requested the office to investigate claims made by Lrandison. Grandison said today he 'iad still. not been contacted by the District Attorney's office. A spokesman for the office refused to comment. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/01 : CIA-RDP90-00552R000201040037-6 .

A private investi- V or, Milo Speriglio, and Robert Slaty- who says be secretly married the ac- tress on Oct. 4, 1951, in Tijuana, Mexico, said that miss Monroe was killed ? shortly after the end of a romance with .Robert F. Kennedy, then the Attorney General. LOS ANGELES, Dec. 28 (AP) - Marilyn Monroe either killed herself or accidentally took an overdose of barbit- urates, the District Attorney said today after a review of the actress's death in 1962. The review was ordered after a Los Angeles private detective argued she was murdered by "a dissident faction" of the Central Intelligence Agency-or similar group. "Based on the evidence available to us," District Attorney John Van de Kamp said, "it appears that her death could have been a suicide or a result of an accidentaldrug overdose. "It is possible that while her ingestion of a lethal quantity of barbiturates was voluntary, she may have been in such a state of emotional confusion that she. lacked a clearly formed purpose." He Plans No Further Inquiry Mr. Van de Kamp said no further criminal investigation into Miss Mon- roe's death was planned. The District Attorney's office decided on the review because there was no dis- trict attorney's investigation at the time, and because of recent reports con- tending Miss Monroe was murdered, supposedly because she knew of a plot against Fidel Castro, the Cuban leader. The report said that a murder "would have required a massive, in-place con-_ spiracy covering all the principals at the death scene, including "the actual killer or killers; the chief ipedical ex- aminer-coroner; the autops}'surgeon to. whom the case was fortuitously as- signed; and most all of the police offi cers assigned to the case as well as their "Our inquiries and document exami- nation uncovered no credible evidence supporting a murder theory," the re- portsaid. Miss Monroe's body was found sprawled an the bed of her home in Brentwood on Aug. 5, IM. The county coroner ruled her death a suicide by Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/16: CIA-RDP90-00552R000404360001-5

Milo Speriglio, director of the 76-year-old Nick Har- ris detective agency, said after spending more than a decade investigating Miss Monroe's death, "I can say with 1,000 percent accuracy that she was murdered." Speriglio said the "red diary" would prove Miss Mon- roe did not commit suicide 20 years ago this Thursday. Instead, he said, the 36-year-old blonde was injected with drugs by a "dissident" faction of the CIA to keep her from holding a news conference she had planned for the next day to disclose the plot to kill Castro. A CIA spokesman in Washington said the story of the alleged murder plot was "absolutely false, totally absurd" Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/08/20: CIA-RDP90-00552R000404360013-2

Overview of IRR Activities Last Week: (U//M+144)FOIA/PA & EO MDRs (11//A14343) CIA Exceeds Annual FOIA-PA and EO Goals (U///r1110) The Agency closed FY 2001 by reducing its backlog of pending Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act (PA) cases by almost 19 percent; well in excess of the 15 percent goal that had been established for the fiscal year. The Agency also exceeded its FY 2001 goal for reducing the number of pending Executive Order (EO) Mandatory requests. By the end of FY 2001, the backlog of requests had been reduced to 797 cases, which represents a 24-percent reduction in the backlog; more than double the 10 percent goal that had been set for the year. These are exceptional accomplishments and are a reflection of the hard work of the staffs in the CIO, Directorate IR0s, and those IMOs and other personnel in the components that assist in processing the cases. (U//A-WeJrCIA Declassification Center (U//A.W14) CIA Declassification Center Meets Annual Goal (Ullikflt1E)) The CIA Declassification Center (CDC) met the FY 2001 goal of 30 million pages reviewed and 7 million pages released. The CDC provided the National Archives and Records Adminstration with 4.8 million pages of released film and hardcopy products and prepared 2.3 million pages for the CIA Records Search Tool (CREST), which is a database of CIA declassified records available to the public on terminals located at NARA in College Park, Maryland. The FY 2001 CREST data are undergoing a final review prior to transfer to NARA for issues that may have emerged based on the 11 September terrorist act. (U//HQ) From the Archives: Vodka from Sawdust (U//43e) In a 1954 CIA report that was recently reviewed by the DO team at the CIA Declassification Center, an intelligence source described a visit to a large distillery in the Soviet Union near the city of Khabarovsk. The distillery purportedly manufactured vodka from sawdust. The vodka was reportedly inferior as a beverage but was effective as hydraulic fluid in artillery brakes.
