The howling siren reverberated through the night as Su Yuchen, in the passenger seat, deleted one photo after another of Kristia from his phone.

He was curious about the motives of the high-ranking vampire disguised as a human, infiltrating the Sky City. Additionally, to verify something, he wouldn't expose her for the time being.

"What are you doing?!" Shuck, retracting his gaze from navigating the traffic at night, feeling slightly better, immediately reprimanded Su Yuchen. "Put your phone down!"

Su Yuchen, after deleting the photos, locked his screen, observing the surroundings, ready to evade at a moment's notice. He knew this journey wouldn't be smooth sailing because…

The traffic light turned green ahead. Shuck pressed the gas pedal harder, and the police car roared forward.

Then—

"Damn it!"

A car from the right, its brakes malfunctioning, ran the red light and aimed straight at the passenger side. Shuck slammed the steering wheel hard, skillfully utilizing spell magic to avoid the collision.

Then, he picked up the walkie-talkie again. "Intersection at Peace West Street, some idiot ran a red light and nearly crashed into me! Get over here!"

"Damn it!"

Shuck's expression grew increasingly dark. Why was today so unlucky?!

"Damn it!"

After driving a distance, he cursed again, abruptly braking and swerving horizontally—

Duang!

The sharp corner of a huge billboard made a hole in the road! If he hadn't stopped, the right side of the car's roof would've been wrecked!

Bang!

Shuck slammed the steering wheel hard. "Damn it, just what the hell is happening today?!"

His inner fury kept escalating. Restarting the vehicle, he muttered under his breath, "Have to break the legs of the sponsor of that damn advertisement!"

Su Yuchen glanced at the massive billboard stuck in the ground. Shuck's driving skills were pretty good. He could relax a bit, not needing to be on the edge of jumping out at any moment.

"How much farther?"

"Shut the hell up!"

Su Yuchen sighed, feeling the string of misfortunes he had inadvertently brought—

Forced detours due to cracked roads, waiting twenty minutes due to a car accident, a tree falling by the roadside, a mischievous kid suddenly darting from the sidewalk…

Shuck evaded all the sudden occurrences, but his heart couldn't "evade" the increasingly irritable mood.

"Tell me, is it your damn accomplice?!" He glared fiercely at Su Yuchen.

How else could he explain the numerous incidents along the way? It had to be this guy's accomplice trying to save him!

So, even if he wasn't the unregistered vampire responsible for recent incidents, he definitely was a dangerous element affiliated with some organization!

Only a dangerous element would resort to destroying public property and using children to rescue their cohorts!

"I say it's all coincidental, do you believe me?"

"Bah! I believe you, my foot!" Shuck kept his eyes on all directions and listened keenly. "I want to see when your pals will show up in front of me!"

"Here they come!"

Suddenly, it got dark in front of them. Shuck slammed on the brakes, eyes fixed on the massive red fabric that appeared out of nowhere, covering the windshield. He swiftly opened the door, gun in hand.

"Get out!"

Holding the gun, Shuck warily scanned the surroundings. As vampires hadn't been operating in this area, there were no nighttime restrictions on movement. At this moment, vehicles and pedestrians on the sidewalk nearby halted, nervously watching the scene unfold.

Is there danger nearby?

"I'm terribly sorry, officer!" A slightly overweight middle-aged man hurried over, bowing apologetically. "Our hotel is set to open tomorrow, and we were just about to cover our signboard when a gust of wind blew the red fabric over. We're deeply sorry."

Shuck's mouth twitched as he glared at the guy, taking a few deep breaths to contain his inner rage. "Move it."

"Sure, sure, really sorry."

Back on the road.

"When will they act?!"

"All random events."

"Pretending! Keep pretending!" Shuck glared at him angrily. "Once we're at the bureau, I'll make sure you spit out all your accomplices!"

Since he didn't believe the truth, Su Yuchen decided not to bother. He glanced out the window. The gate of the Magic Adjudication Bureau was in sight. He kindly reminded, "You should slow down."

Shuck was breathing heavily, eyes almost glowing red. The string of bad luck had completely eroded all his patience.

"You just shut…"

Ssssh!!!

A sharp friction sound. The front-right tire burst, and the vehicle spun towards the guard post at the entrance of the bureau.

Is someone trying to save this guy in the most dangerous place?

Shuck speculated, using his exceptional driving skills to control the out-of-control car.

Bang!

After paying the price of a damaged right headlight, the police car came to a steady stop.

Shuck kicked open the car door, vigilantly surveying the surroundings, on high alert.

"Shuck, what's going on?"

The security room personnel, seeing his anxious state, rushed out, also keeping a watchful eye around them.

Although Sky City maintained good order, due to its unique position in the human world, acts of destruction were not unheard of.

However, despite the alertness, nothing happened…

"Shuck, what are you up to? Is this some kind of a drill?"

Shuck glanced at Su Yuchen in the car and slowly holstered his gun. "This guy is a dangerous element, related to recent vampire incidents. There have been unknown forces trying to rescue him all along the way. The burst tire is definitely linked to them!"

"That's a big catch."

"Keep an eye on your surroundings. After reporting to Director Dong, I'll personally interrogate him. I'll make sure he spills all the secrets he knows!"

Shuck put away his gun and walked to the passenger side, opening the door and looking at Su Yuchen, his anger rising. "Get out!"

Su Yuchen stepped out of the car, glancing at the damaged right headlight, and clicked his tongue.

Although he was always plagued by misfortune, fortunately, misfortune seemed incapable of killing him. But what if someone with a fragile psyche had this kind of constitution? They'd be tormented to madness, wouldn't they?

….

Magic Adjudication Bureau, interrogation room.

The interrogation room, devoid of windows, had glaring lights that were harsh on the eyes. Su Yuchen ignored the interrogator's order to open his eyes, simply answering their questions.

"Name?"

"Su Yuchen."

The interrogator wasn't Shuck; he had gone to report to a deputy director on duty. The current interrogator, after writing the name on the interrogation record, picked up Su Yuchen's phone.

Rubbing the handcuff's chains between his thumb and forefinger, Su Yuchen recalled all the details from meeting Kristia to their parting.

From the moment she said, "Sister will do naughty things with you, okay?" the 'misfortunes' stopped occurring like a computer crash.

Recalling the details of his conversation with Kristia until she actually showed the determination to kill him… His hand accidentally hit the edge of the trash can, leaving a gash.

'Does her attitude towards me have something to do with it?'

'Is the difference between getting close to me or killing me? Is physical contact a condition, or just being together?'

'Why does contact with her decrease the frequency of misfortunes? Is it related to her inner attitude or also to mine?'

'Is it only when I'm with her that the frequency of misfortunes decreases, or can it happen with other people too?'

'Now that I know her identity, can I use it to verify… act like I don't know her identity to research further.'

Confirming his internal plan, Su Yuchen pushed back in his chair, avoiding a ceramic tile that fell from the ceiling.

Crack!

The interrogator frowned at the broken tile. It seemed the unit needed a redecoration.

Ignoring Su Yuchen, he glanced at the emergency contacts on his phone, but after a moment's thought, he refrained from dialing.

Shuck wanted to personally interrogate, to oversee the entire process. If he acted independently, that guy's explosive temper would surely be directed at him.

So, he placed the phone back on the table, looking around boredly.

"Director Dong, someone continuously tried to rescue this person all along the way… which means even if he's not a vampire or a blood servant, he's definitely a dangerous element from some organization."

"I suggest using special means to extract all his secrets!"

The chubby Director Dong squinted. "What's his name?"

"Let me check… He's called Su Yuchen."

"Go and interrogate first, but don't go overboard."

"Yes!"

"Su Yuchen…"

Director Dong sighed. "They don't even let us sleep properly."

He sat upright, typing 'Su Yuchen' into the internal website.

Then, the landline phone rang urgently.

"Su Yuchen, current residence Ding Sheng Community, unknown family members… What exactly are you doing in Sky City?"

"I've mentioned before, I'm here for college."

The interrogation room's questions and answers remained relatively peaceful for the time being.

"You've been here for just a week, a young man of eighteen, how did you get the money to afford a house worth two million?

Bang!

Shuck slammed the table, his intimidating gaze fixed on Su Yuchen. "Kid, don't underestimate Sky City's police force!"

"Tell me, what's your identity? What's your purpose infiltrating Sky University? Are you a blood servant of the vampires or a dangerous member of another organization?!"

"Su Yuchen, a student by profession."

"Still being stubborn. If I don't give you a hard time…"

Click.

The door of the interrogation room was pushed open.

"Director Dong, why did you come here?"

At the police station's main entrance.

Director Dong, with a beer belly, grinned at Su Yuchen. "Student Su, I'm terribly sorry! Since you're from a special department, you should have said it earlier."

"I just searched your name in the internal database, and the Chang'an Kingdom Special Agency called asking, 'Is our person there?' It startled me… Please don't mind the misunderstanding, hahaha."

He finished speaking and gave a glance to the displeased Shuck.

Before Shuck could have unleashed his anger, the outlet for his frustration was set free. His face turned grim; he forced a horrifying smile. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to…"

His tone faltered slightly as Su Yuchen completely ignored his apology and walked away, prompting Shuck's voice to continue with a hint of mockery. "So, he's a dog from Chang'an."

"Don't talk nonsense!" Director Dong kicked Shuck.

"What's the big deal?" Shuck shrugged. "Isn't he just a dog?"

"Aren't you?"

"I'm a real dog, but he, as a human, is also a dog. Heh heh… There are many dogs like him in this city."

"You can say that about others, but not him." Director Dong's friendly smile faded a bit. "Although Chang'an Kingdom is just a vassal state under the Xuanqing Empire, nowadays, it's one of the most influential states in the chaotic Xuanqing Empire, especially the royal princess there, quite remarkable…"

"How impressive can a little girl be?"

"In this era, judging people by age is the biggest mistake." Director Dong gave Shuck a meaningful look. "Pay attention to the news about that princess, and you'll see how remarkable she is."

Shuck smirked nonchalantly. "Director Dong, I'll go back to patrolling."

"Okay."

Director Dong nodded, relieved that he had checked in advance through the internal network. Otherwise, it could have caused some trouble later on.

Sky City indeed was an independent zone, not subject to any country's jurisdiction. But in a way, not being subject to any country equaled being subject to all of them. Because balance made it not belong to any single country.
