Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Punishment

"Kent, your cruelty is truly appalling, to the point of not even sparing your lover's daughter." Yide's voice echoed from the shadows, his figure gradually appearing before Kent and Ella.

"It's you!" A flicker of surprise crossed Kent's eyes, but he quickly understood everything.

This morning, Yide had spoken with Ella, deliberately allowing him to overhear their conversation.

After learning that Ella might reveal the secrets of the past, Kent, to avoid any complications, would naturally resort to a deadly move.

Now, with his scheme exposed, Kent knew he had no way out.

Only by killing Yide and Ella could he possibly conceal the truth forever.

In an instant, Kent made his decision. He gripped the cold, gleaming dagger in his hand, and like a venomous snake, lunged towards Yide.

His movements were swift and ruthless, clearly intending to kill Yide in one fell swoop.

Yide smiled contemptuously, easily dodging Kent's attack. He didn't even draw the one-handed sword hanging at his waist, as if a cat was toying with a mouse.

After a few rounds, Kent was already bent over, gasping for breath, clearly exhausted.

"Giving up so soon?" Yide mocked.

Seeing that the situation was hopeless, Kent tried to invoke his backer to scare Yide off: "Huff… huff… you bastard, do you even know who's behind me?"

Yide raised an eyebrow with interest: "Oh? Tell me, who is it? Maybe I even know them."

"Chief Investigator Kenneth of the Marechaussee Phantom." When Kent spoke this name, his expression became confident, as if he already foresaw Yide's fearful and panicked reaction upon hearing it.

However, Yide's reaction disappointed him greatly. He wore a disdainful expression, his tone filled with contempt: "What, your backer is just a Chief Investigator?"

Seeing that Yide was not intimidated by his threat, Kent immediately changed his strategy and began to beg for mercy: "Yide, listen to me, as long as you let me go, wealth, women, I can give y-"

However, before he could finish speaking, Yide suddenly kicked him in the abdomen, sending him flying several meters away.

Ella looked at Yide gratefully, relieved that he hadn't allowed Kent to continue saying those insulting things about her mother, Madam Bella.

"Ella, come with me." Yide said calmly.

Ella nodded, following closely behind Yide.

Yide grabbed Kent by the sleeve, dragging him out of the manor gate like a tattered doll.

After walking for about half an hour, Yide stopped in front of a seemingly simple house.

Ella's heart was filled with confusion, because this was clearly not the location of the Fontaine enforcement department.

She couldn't help but ask: "Yide, what is this place?"

However, Yide did not directly answer her question.

He smiled coldly, his tone revealing dissatisfaction and disappointment with the nation of Fontaine: "Fontaine, this so-called land of justice, is actually the most unjust nation.

Here, there is no true fairness or justice. A heartless criminal like Kent would at most be sentenced to life imprisonment."

Hearing these words, Ella was shocked. Yide was so directly negating Fontaine's justice.

Yide stepped forward and gently knocked on the door. In the silent night, the knocking sounded particularly clear.

After a moment, a weak voice came from inside the door: "Who is it?"

"It's me, Yide." Yide replied, "I've brought the murderer who killed your daughter."

The door was immediately opened, revealing the gaunt face of Dana, her eyes filled with sadness. Her voice trembled as she asked: "Where?"

Yide pointed to Kent, who was lying on the ground, unable to resist.

Dana walked closer, her emotions instantly becoming extremely agitated.

She pointed at Kent with trembling fingers, her voice filled with endless grief and anger: "Kent, it really is you, you beast! Why did you kill Annie and Anna? They were only ten years old! How could you be so cruel!"

Kent suddenly laughed maniacally, his laughter echoing in the night sky, sending chills down one's spine.

He said viciously: "They deserved to die for seeing what they shouldn't have seen!"

Hearing this, a flash of coldness crossed Yide's eyes.

He squatted down and slapped Kent hard across the face, directly swelling his left cheek.

Kent was dazed by the blow, but he still struggled to shout: "You, you're using vigilante justice! I'm going to appeal to the judge! You'll be punished by the law!"

But before he could finish speaking, another crisp sound rang out, and Kent's right cheek was also swollen by Yide's slap. This time, he was completely unable to speak.

Then, Yide carried Kent into the room like a chicken.

He searched Kent and found the dagger, then handed it to Dana, saying coldly: "As long as you don't kill him, you can do whatever you want."

Dana took the dagger, her eyes filled with endless hatred and anger.

She remembered the tragic state of her daughter's death, and the grief and anger in her heart instantly surged.

Kent saw the dagger in Dana's hand and her hateful eyes, and was immediately terrified.

Then, a cruel punishment began.

Yide stood aside, calmly watching the entire process, and occasionally guiding Dana, telling her which parts were not fatal and which parts could inflict the greatest pain.

Ella turned away, unable to watch the bloody and terrifying scene.

After the punishment, Kent was on the verge of death, lying on the ground covered in blood.

Dana, on the other hand, was holding the blood-stained dagger, slumped on the ground, crying incessantly.

Although she had punished the murderer, her two daughters would never return.

Then, Yide began to clean up the messy scene.

He treated Kent's wounds with saline and carefully bandaged them.

Although Kent deserved it, he could not die yet, because a trial was still needed to let everyone know his crimes.
