Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Conflict

Without hesitation, Herbert pulled the trigger of his flintlock pistol, intending to kill the audacious figure before him with a single shot.

However, the slow firing rate of the old-fashioned flintlock proved to be a fatal flaw for Herbert in this critical moment.

With astonishing speed, Lin Yide dodged the deadly bullet. He instantly closed the distance to Herbert and, with a backhand strike, knocked the pistol flying.

Herbert watched in shock as his weapon arced through the air before landing uselessly on the ground.

Before he could react, Lin Yide's sword was already at his throat. The cold blade pressed against his skin, sending a shiver down his spine.

Herbert's face paled instantly, his resolve and decisiveness replaced by fear. Beads of cold sweat formed on his forehead, and his lips trembled as he managed to stammer, "Yide… you, calm down."

Lin Yide's lips curled into a gentle smile. "Captain Herbert, did Chief Investigator Kenneth send you?"

Herbert hesitated for a moment, then nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes. He said you were going to torture Kent and Ella and told me to bring them back immediately."

"So, you just obediently came?" Lin Yide said with a hint of sarcasm. "You're such a complete idiot. Didn't you think about the reason why? It seems I was right, the Lannis family are all a bunch of trash."

Herbert's heart burned with anger at these words, but he dared not show it. He clenched his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms, to restrain his fury.

Lin Yide said disappointedly, "You know, you are not even as good as your brain-dead brother, at least he had the courage to duel me, although the result was terrible. As for you, hehe."

Herbert's cheeks felt as if they had been slapped by these words, burning with pain. He clenched his fists and asked through gritted teeth, "Yide, what do you want?"

Lin Yide sighed softly. "There's too much garbage in this nation of Fontaine. I need to clean it up."

He glanced at the two Special Security members groaning in pain from their severed arms and continued, "Have your men take them for treatment quickly. Don't let them suffer here any longer. Also, send someone to notify Neuvillette."

Although filled with humiliation and anger, Herbert knew his current situation and could only swallow his pride and do as he was told.

He immediately issued orders to his Special Security members, instructing them to treat the wounded and notify Neuvillette.

Furina, with her usual elegant gait, walked gracefully to a house and gently knocked on the door.

The wait seemed longer than usual, but finally, the door slowly opened inward.

Furina looked at Dana before her and noticed that she was different from before.

"Lady Furina, what can I do for you?" Dana asked respectfully.

Furina hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Uh… Yide, he's been here, hasn't he?" She stared intently at Dana, trying to catch a hint of something in her expression.

The expected panic and unease did not appear on Dana's face.

Instead, she replied with an unusually calm demeanor, "Yes, he did come. He also brought Kent and asked me to confront him. I managed to distract him and then tortured Kent.

I will take all the blame."

Furina stared at Dana's indifferent face, her lips moved, but she ultimately did not say what she wanted to say.

Dana continued, "Lady Furina, I'm sorry. I know I should believe in justice. But justice delayed is justice denied."

Furina left Dana's residence with a heavy heart, walking towards the Palais Mermonia.

Her steps were still elegant, but they seemed somewhat heavy.

Everything she had experienced today had shaken her long-held beliefs about justice.

Lin Yide bringing the murderer Kent to Dana and asking her to execute him was undoubtedly a blatant challenge and trampling of Fontaine's laws.

However, from Furina's personal emotional perspective, she felt that it was a just act.

Fontaine's legal system has never had a death penalty.

The most severe punishment is only to imprison criminals in the Fortress of Meropide for life.

For villains like Kent, who are heinous and insane, a mere life sentence is too light and cannot make him pay the price he deserves.

Furina's thoughts became more and more chaotic, and she felt her beliefs and moral compass were collapsing little by little.

It's all that Yide's fault!

An hour later, she returned to the Palais Mermonia and learned shocking news from Sedene.

Yide had actually cut off the arms of two Special Security members!

After hearing this, Furina could no longer care about anything else and went straight to Yide's villa.

She couldn't let the situation escalate any further.
