Chapter 54 - The Eight Slaughter Gods, A Living Hell

"As far as I know, even the Clear Sky Douluo Tang Hao was able to leave this place."

The veiled woman didn't know where Yu Tianming got this information, but she continued explaining calmly, "There is only one way to leave the City of Slaughter—by becoming the champion of the Hell Slaughter Arena. Once you win that title, you gain the qualification to challenge the Road to Hell. If you can make it through, then you'll be allowed to leave the City of Slaughter. Those who succeed are granted the title of Slaughter God. The City of Slaughter has existed for over a thousand years, and in all that time, only eight Slaughter Gods have ever emerged. The Tang Hao you mentioned was one of them."

'Only eight Slaughter Gods in a thousand years. That naturally includes Tang Hao and Bibi Dong. But now, the City of Slaughter is about to welcome its ninth.'

"What happens if someone fails the challenge?" Yu Tianming asked.

The veiled woman smiled. "In the City of Slaughter, there is no such thing as failure. There is only success—or death. That applies to everything here."

Yu Tianming laughed nonchalantly. "As expected of the City of Slaughter."

The veiled woman continued, "There is no currency in the City of Slaughter. All food and drink are provided for free—though some of it may be poisoned. Here, the dead are the most valuable. Everyone uses the number of skulls they possess as a symbol of their strength. With the blood and skulls of opponents killed by your own hands, you can trade for other items."

"Take me to the Hell Slaughter Arena," Yu Tianming interrupted her introduction.

He wasn't interested in the rest. All he wanted was to start fighting in the Hell Slaughter Arena as soon as possible.

The veiled woman was stunned for a moment. "Are you certain? Less than one in ten ever walk out of there alive. It's the place where our population drops the fastest. Normally, each person is only required to enter the Hell Slaughter Arena once per year. If you can survive one battle, you earn another year to live in the City of Slaughter."

Yu Tianming noticed a slight furrow in her lovely brows but still responded seriously, "I'm sure. Let's go now."

"In that case, please follow me." With that, the veiled woman turned and headed into the city. Her steps were steady and even, always staying just half a pace ahead of Yu Tianming.

Yu Tianming followed at a calm and unhurried pace, quietly observing everything around him as they walked.

Just then, a figure suddenly rose from the shadows on the side of the street.

"Hey, a newcomer, huh? Looks like we've got a fresh Bloody Mary on the way. Heh heh."

Yu Tianming glanced at the man and frowned. It was hard to tell his age—his body was disturbingly emaciated, with barely any flesh on his bones. If not for the layer of skin covering him, he could easily be mistaken for a walking skeleton.

Unlike Gu Rong, this man's appearance wasn't due to his spirit or some evil cultivation technique. He simply looked like someone who was always on the brink of death—both his body and spirit were weak, as if he could drop dead at any moment. And whatever caused it had clearly taken a toll on his sanity.

"Someone like him can survive one Hell Slaughter Arena fight per year?" Yu Tianming asked the veiled woman.

Only then did the skeletal man notice the woman beside Yu Tianming. His expression changed in terror. Without another word, he darted back into the shadows.

"Of course not," she replied. "The death rate in there is far too high. Not everyone is willing to go through the trials of the Hell Slaughter Arena. There is, however, another way to survive in the City of Slaughter—by contributing two cups of Bloody Mary each month."

Yu Tianming already knew what Bloody Mary was: human blood. Judging by the man's condition, he had probably offered far too much of it. He likely didn't have long to live.

'I don't even want to know how people can stomach drinking blood taken from someone like that.'

"If someone gives too much Bloody Mary, wouldn't they basically be offering themselves up to be slaughtered?" Yu Tianming asked with a chuckle.

The veiled woman shook her head. "No. Right now, you're in the outer city. This isn't the true City of Slaughter. Only the inner city is truly without rules. Those who survive by offering Bloody Mary can only operate in the outer city, where random killing is not allowed. Only those who survive the Hell Slaughter Arena are qualified to live in the inner city. The pleasures there are far greater—but so are the dangers. Death could come at any moment."

Yu Tianming already knew everything she said, so he didn't ask any further questions. He silently continued walking toward the inner city.

As they moved along, the number of people around them increased. Most wore pale, sickly expressions, and many were nothing but skin and bones.

No need to ask—these were the ones too afraid to enter the Hell Slaughter Arena, surviving by giving up two cups of blood every month.

Yu Tianming clearly remembered: one cup of blood was about half a jin, meaning one jin per month, or around 500 milliliters. In his previous life, even university students giving blood for charity would only donate 400 ml per session. A normal person couldn't possibly survive giving 500 ml of blood every month. But these were soul masters—why were they so thin and frail?

'These are the weaklings who couldn't survive in the inner city. Their strength must be so low that even the toxins of the City of Slaughter are enough to break them.'

In the outer city of the City of Slaughter, the streets were lined with simple black stone houses. Dining spots were few and far between. People lined up at intervals, waiting for food to be distributed.

They were barely a step above beggars. So much for the so-called paradise of sin—there was no enjoyment to be found.

The veiled woman's explanation was simple: "Even among the wicked, there are ranks. Only the truly powerful can enjoy themselves in this fallen paradise. As for the useless trash—they deserve only to struggle to survive."

The city was larger than Yu Tianming had expected.

After walking for more than half an hour, the veiled woman finally brought him to the inner city's outer wall.

Compared to the City of Slaughter's outer wall, the inner wall wasn't very tall—only about ten meters at its highest point.

It was obvious that the wall wasn't for defense—just a simple barrier separating the inner and outer cities.

The gates stood wide open, and there were no guards.

The veiled woman explained coolly, "The inner city doesn't need guards. Anyone from the outer city can enter at any time—if they have the guts. But once inside, they must face whatever awaits them. Since you're new here, I suggest staying in the outer city for a while. Get used to things before entering. Once inside, please stay within five meters of me. Otherwise, I can't guarantee your safety."
