"Dr. Lucian's pet?"
I turned at the sound of Austin's voice, to see him approaching from the same hallway I'd just emerged from.
"You're seeing Dr…." he paused, struggling to form the words, as if speaking them aloud might make them dangerously real. His voice cracked slightly, and I realized he sounded more terrified than I felt. Which was interesting, considering I wasn't scared at all.
"Do you believe everything Lily says?" I snapped, letting my voice sharpen as if he'd just accused me.
Austin stumbled over his words, his face flushing red. "No, no, that's… that's not what I meant. You're right, Dr. Lucian would never do something like that. And you're obviously studying hard these days, preparing for exams."
"Thank you, Austin," I said with an exaggerated smile.
"Selene," he called as I started to walk away. I turned back, eyebrow raised. "Is Maya… I mean, do you know if she's seeing anyone?"
