The explosion tore through the night, lighting up the sky.
They hit the ground hard.
But they were alive.
Zara coughed as smoke rose around them. Her whole body ached. Her skin burned, her ears rang, but she was alive.
So was he.
She blinked, trying to see clearly, but everything was a blur. The edges of her vision swam in smoke and darkness.
He held her close, stunned, breathing hard. "Don't ever do something so reckless again," he warned, voice low and firm.
He let her go gently. For what felt like forever, they both laid flat on the ground, staring up at the thick, dark smoke curling into the night sky.
Zara slowly rolled over, pain shooting through her body. She reached for his mask, wanting to know, needing to see.
But as she leaned over, a drop of her blood fell onto his face, alerting him.
His eyes snapped open. He caught her hand, pinning her gently but firmly to the ground.
"Not so fast," he said, a smirk tugging at his lips.
That smirk.
