"I do not know of any either or any dark spells for that matter," Severus replied. "I am going to send my Patronus to Remus and invite him to breakfast tomorrow. Possibly he may have an idea of what we may be dealing with. In the meantime I want you both to be careful. I am also going to warn my snakes if Marcus has not already done so and I will warn the other heads of house also. Harry, do you want to stay down here or go back to Ravenclaw Tower?"
"I'll go back to Ravenclaw, Dad. There are a lot of books in the common room that aren't in the library and maybe I can find out what types of creatures or spells can petrify. Is it okay if I warn my friends and my roommates to be careful?"
"I do not believe you will need to as I am certain all the heads of house will be having house meetings to inform everyone."
"Good," Harry remarked with a sigh. "Now if I can only solve the problem of Colin Creevey so easily,"
"What's the problem with Mr. Creevey besides a generous amount of enthusiasm for everything magical?" Severus asked.
"He's constantly asking everyone if they know me because he wants to take a picture of me apparently."
"Maybe you should talk to Professor McGonagall and ask her if she can talk to Colin about overstepping," Lily suggested.
"I hadn't thought of that," Harry admitted. "And it's a good idea, Mum."
"Alright then," Severus said getting up. "I will walk you and your mother back to the fourth floor."
"You had better contact Luc and Cissa and warn them also since Luc is a school governor and you know the headmaster won't do it," Lily said.
"I will contact them after I talk to my snakes," Severus affirmed.
At the foot of the spiral staircase leading to the entrance to Ravenclaw Tower, Severus gave Harry a hug and wished him a goodnight. "Do not stay up too late researching," he advised.
"I won't, Dad," Harry promised. He gave Lily a hug and said, "Night, Mum."
"Goodnight, Harry. Pleasant dreams."
Once Lily was safely inside her quarters, Severus left to return to Slytherin House where he asked the Prefects to gather all the members in the common room.
"As you may already know or may have heard; Mr. Filch's cat, Mrs. Norris, was found petrified and hanging from a torch holder on the second floor this evening."
One of the children raised their hand. Severus nodded and said, "Yes, Mr. Canfield?"
"The headmaster thinks it's one of us that did it, doesn't he?"
"I will not deny that is where his suspicions first fell. However, what I want to stress is that we do not know what happened or what caused Mrs. Norris to become petrified and we do not know if it will happen again. I want everyone to exercise extreme caution and to be very careful. If you see or hear or see anything out of the ordinary, please report it to a me, a prefect, the head boy or girl, or one of the other professors."
He dismissed them to return to their dorms and then returned to his quarters, sent off his Patronus to Remus with an invitation to breakfast and then flooed Luc and Cissa. When he explained to them what had happened that evening and about the voice Harry had heard twice. "I will not tell Dumbledore about the voice Harry heard; he already thinks Harry is the next budding dark lord."
Luc looked stern. "The governors haven't received any messages about this from Dumbledore."
Severus replied with a shrug. "Possibly because it was an animal and not a student and he thinks it was an isolated incident."
"But you don't?"
"Nothing such as this as ever happened before and I do not believe Harry is just hearing this voice inside his head. I do not believe it is an isolated incident, but unfortunately we will have to wait to see if anything else occurs."
"I will inform the other governors. Let me know immediately if anything else happens."
Severus nodded and pulled his head out of the fireplace to see Remus' Patronus in the form of, not surprisingly, a wolf accepting his breakfast invitation.
Severus rose at six the next morning and requested that Blinky bring breakfast shortly after seven when Professor Lupin would arrive.
At precisely seven there was a knock on the door. Severus looked up over the door to see Remus Lupin. "Open the door," he called as he poured tea and the door swung open to allow Remus in. "Good morning, Remus. Have a seat. Breakfast will be arriving in a few minutes."
"Good morning, Severus," Remus replied pulling out a chair and sitting down. "How is Harry?"
"He was a bit shook up last night because twice he has heard a voice saying that it was hungry, needed blood and wanted to kill. He was following the voice last night and that is how he ended up on the second floor. The thing is that nobody else who was with him heard it so he is rather shaken."Remus whistled softly. "Yes, I can see where that would definitely rattle him."
Blinky popped in with breakfast and set on the table. There was a tray with platters of eggs, bacon and sausage, and fried potatoes plus a plate piled with buttered toast. Severus and Remus served themselves and began to eat.
"The reason I invited you to breakfast is to pick your brain about the petrification of Mrs. Norris last night."
Remus shook his head. "I was thinking about it last night and I can't recall any spell that causes petrification that doesn't respond to a counter...that would need a restorative draught to remove it."
