"Potter …Potter!" Moody snapped. He was standing by his desk with an exasperated look on his face.
"What?" James said looking up. He'd been so deep in thought that he hadn't heard him approaching.
"There's been some strange activity reported around the old Riddle place in Little Hangleton. I'm sending Kingsley to investigate and I want you to back him up. He's in charge and what he decides goes."
"What kind of strange activity, Mad-Eye?" James asked. "I hope this isn't another false alarm reported by some drunken wizard."
"Doesn't matter if it is. Scrimgeour wants all reports of any Death Eater activity checked out."
James got up and went to find Shacklebolt. Why in the hell did Mad-Eye have to send him out with that tight-arsed Ravenclaw who could practically recite the rules in the Auror's handbook off the top of his head?
Kingsley was waiting impatiently in the hallway outside of Auror headquarters. "Let's go. We're going to be apparating into the cemetery outside of the Riddle Manor. I'll have to side-along apparate you since you've never been there before."
They apparated into the cemetery right in front of a scary monument of what looked like the Angel of Death holding a scythe. It had the name RIDDLE in big letters underneath the statue.
"Whew! Creepy!" James said shuddering. "Glad we're here in the daylight."
"Muggles have been reporting seeing lights in the house at night, but while a Muggle owns the house, he doesn't live here. There used to be a caretaker, but he was found dead years ago."
"It doesn't look as if he hired anybody to replace him. Everything's overgrown and there are weeds everywhere you look."
"We're going inside to see if we can find anything. Mad-Eye put me in charge so if we run into a situation that I feel is too dangerous for us and I say go; we go."
"Fine," James said.
They entered with their wands at ready. They crept carefully from the entrance hall to the drawing room, but there was nobody there. Kingsley used his hands to indicate that they should check the upstairs. In one of the bedrooms James spotted a black robe laying draped over a chair. "Hey look at this. It looks like a Death Eater robe." He lifted it up and underneath was a silvery mask worn by all the Death Eaters.
"Whoever it is must be pretty short," Kingsley remarked noticing the length of the robe.
"Well, we know for sure they've been here."
"Let's get back to headquarters and inform Mad-Eye so Scrimgeour can set up a regular watch on this house." He turned to leave almost stepping on a rat that squeaked loudly and ran under a dresser.
"What was that?" James yelled whipping out his wand.
"It's just a rat, Potter. Since there is no longer a caretaker to set traps, the house is probably full of them."
They disapparated back to headquarters, taking the robe as evidence. After hearing the crack of their disapparation, the rat came out from under the dresser and immediately transformed into a short overweight wizard with longish brown hair and a bulgy, hangdog face. He had thought he found a safe harbor after hearing that James had returned, but now it appeared the place would shortly be inundated by Aurors and he needed to find another place to stay where nobody went.

The next week Severus and Lily took Harry to Diagon Alley to get his second year school supplies. They went to Madam Malkins first so Harry could be measured for new robes since he had grown at least another two inches more since the blood adoption.
Harry grinned. "I'm almost taller than you now, Mum."
Lily smiled and agreed, "Yes I know and it's because Sev has taken good care of you."
They went to Flourish & Blotts and were shocked to see a line of people spilling out onto the sidewalk from the shop. "What in Merlin's name is going on?" Severus said. He could see over the heads of most of the people waiting in line, but could not see into the shop.
"Oh honey!" A witch in front of them exclaimed, turning around to Severus. "It's Gilderoy Lockhart and he's signing copies of his new book Magical Me. I just adore the man! He's such a hero defeating all those hideous dark creatures and so handsome why his smile alone makes me glow!"
Severus looked as if he was going to gag and Lily and Harry had to bite their tongues to keep from laughing at him and the witch's gushing.
"Perhaps we should get the rest of your supplies and come back Harry," Severus suggested.
"That sounds like a good idea, Dad."
They left the line and walked to Slug & Jiggers. While Lily helped Harry refill his potion kit, Severus ordered the supplies for the student stores and for his private stores. Hogwarts maintained an account with Slug & Jiggers and the money for the school stores would automatically be taken out of it while the money for his private stores would be taken out of Severus' Gringotts account.
They went next to Scribbulus Everchanging Inks after that for parchment, ink and quills. Severus was just about out of red ink so he brought several bottles of it. Finally after picking up Harry's new robes; they returned to Flourish & Blotts to find the line was much shorter and they were able to get in and collect Harry's books.
