Lily sighed. "As you've probably already guessed from what little Sev said that he was a Muggle and an alcoholic. He beat Sev's mother and Sev." Lily paused and then continued, "At one time, this was a very nice area when the mill was still open. It was the main and biggest employer in these parts. It processed imported cotton into thread which was then shipped all over the world, but by the 70's the container ships had become too large to unload in the canal in Manchester and it was cost prohibitive to ship the cotton from other ports and eventually the mill closed. My dad and Sev's dad both worked at the mill, my dad was middle management and Sev's dad was on the floor. When the mill closed, dad had the money to train for a new position, but Mr. Snape didn't. He became bitter about being on the dole and unable to support his wife and son and started to drink."
"So what happened to them?"
"Sev's mum died in his sixth year. She had become very ill, but had nobody to look after her and by the time my parents got worried enough to check on her; she was past the point of any help. The best thing they could do was contact me and I told Sev. Dumbledore refused to allow him to leave even though his mother was dying," Lily said bitterly. "But fortunately, this was one of the rare occasions when Professor Slughorn put his foot down and stood up for his house and Sev was allowed to go home to stay with his mum until she passed. His father was killed in a hit and run accident while intoxicated during the next year. Sev didn't go home for his funeral."
"I know Dumbledore favors Gryffindor, but that seems really cruel."
"It was. He never liked any Slytherins no matter who they were."
"Since his mum was magical; how come she didn't try to make things better? I mean I've heard dad say that she was really good at potions and he learned a lot of what he knew from her. Why couldn't she make a potion or cast a spell on him that would stop him from drinking?"
"Tobias, Sev's dad, hated magic more than Tuney did. I think she promised him she wouldn't use it ever again and she never did even to make things better."
"That's sad," Harry said with a shake of his head.
"It was. Sev's had so many trials in life. His becoming the youngest potion master ever in Britain was the first good thing that happened to him."
"Actually I think you were, Mum," Harry said with a smile.
Severus came upstairs and into the kitchen. He carried three bouquets of flowers with him. "If you are ready; we can go to the cemetery now." He handed one bouquet to Harry.
"When did you go to the florist, Dad? Mum and I didn't even hear you leave."
"I did not buy these. I conjured them with a spell you will learn in your sixth year."
"Cool!"
Severus, Lily, and Harry apparated to Southern Cemetery and Lily led the way to her parents' grave. She found it quickly even though she hadn't been there since shortly before they had gone into hiding. Lily was dismayed at the condition of the grave. She looked around her to see if anyone was present, but seeing nobody, she used her wand to clean up the grave.
Harry laid down his bouquet of flowers and Severus laid down one of the two he had.
Lily conjured a beautiful wreath of yellow and orange roses and placed it against the headstone.
"What are you going to do with this bouquet, Dad?" Harry asked, pointing to the bouquet Severus still held.
"I thought I would visit my mother's grave. I have not been to visit her since she was buried sixteen years ago."
"I'd like to visit her too, Sev. Eileen was always so kind to me when were growing up," Lily said.
"Take my arm Harry," Severus instructed.
With a loud crack, they disapparated from Southern Cemetery and appeared in the Godric Hollow's cemetery. Severus quickly found the Prince Mausoleum. It looked like a small Roman temple and didn't look big enough to house generations of Princes. Severus pulled open the door and allowed Harry and Lily to go in ahead of him. The inside was much bigger than it looked from the outside. Harry knew that was from wizard space.
Severus found his mother's grave and laid the flowers on it.
"Mum, could you…" Harry asked.
Lily understood his request, took out her wand and said softly, "Orchideous Flavens." A bouquet of yellow roses appeared at the end of her wand and she gave them to Harry. She whispered the spell again and adding the word Eburneus after Orchideous and a bouquet of ivory roses appeared. Both Harry and Lily laid their bouquets next to Severus'.
"Thank you," Severus said softly.
They went outside and disapparated back to Spinner's End. Lily had absolutely no interest in seeing where she had been buried.
James sat by his desk in Auror headquarters. Sirius' desk that was back to back with his desk was empty. Sirius had been sent out on assignment with Knightly. James suspected that Moody had discovered that when he and Sirius worked together; they tended to concentrate on Harry rather than what they had been assigned to do.
He couldn't believe the next morning after he'd had the fight with Lily at Hogwarts when he'd woken up with a pair antlers so huge he couldn't even lift his head much less get out of bed. He yelled for help from Sirius, but he couldn't reverse the spell and he contacted Remus who was staying at Hogwarts for the summer, but he couldn't help him either as Lily was the only one who knew the counter-spell. Remus suggested uselessly that he contact Lily, beg her forgiveness, and ask her to reverse the spell. Some advice that was! He didn't have any idea where Lily was staying over the summer unless she was staying with Snivellus in that dump outside of Manchester he called a home. He couldn't believe Lily would let Harry stay there. It was probably infested with Merlin knew what kind of vermin not including Snivellus!
