Chapter 15 - Chapter XIV

On the second day of the chunin exam, Goku made it to the tower by this point in the exams. As he steps inside, he unfolds both scrolls, and Kakashi appears before him.

Kakashi: Goku, you should feel quite proud of yourself because you've made it to the second level of the examinations. So then, what can you tell me about it? How did it go?

Goku: Thanks, Kakashi; it was interesting. I can wait for the next stage to begin.

Kakashi: Well, Goku, you must wait three days to begin.

Goku: Kakashi, do you know how many teams made it?

Kakashi: You've made it through as the third team overall. Only two teams have arrived at this point; team the team that came from Suna and team 8. I anticipated that you would arrive at an earlier time.

Goku: After a monstrous bear annihilated her team, I came across a person who needed help and support to escape the Forest of Death. I offered my assistance to this person. It took me approximately a half day to complete it. I believe that she is a member of the Uzumaki clan and came from the Land of Grass.

Kakashi: An Uzumaki, are you sure?

Goku: She claimed she was an Uzumaki, which I believe to be true. In addition to that, her hair and eyes were red, and I picked up on a considerable amount of chakra from her. Do you believe it's possible that she could be Naruto's long-lost relative?

Kakashi: She may be related to Naruto, but we won't know. Goku, it's time for you to head inside the tower. Get moving! I'll see you later.

After making his way around the tower for a while, Goku eventually came across team 8. He approached them to ask about everyone's health and to learn how they were doing. Goku was worried about them, mainly after they had seen Gaara execute three ninjas gruesomely. Goku's worry was helped by the fact that they had witnessed the execution.

After ensuring that everyone is okay and spending time with team eight, Goku continues to go around the tower and runs with Gaara's team as they pass each other on their way around the building. After some time, Goku's interest faded, and he exited the tower to find something more interesting to do. He then made his way around to the back of the building, where he sat down on the grass, crossed his legs, brought his hands together, and started meditating.

A short distance away from where Goku was meditating, two people were keeping an eye on him. The first one was named Tamari. She was observing Goku as he meditated, and then she recalled the first time she saw him and how he dealt with Kakuro. When they met for the second time in the Forest of Death, he stood his ground against Gaara and did not show any sign of fear. She couldn't believe someone talked down Gaara during his blood loss stage.

Hinata was the second person who was observing Goku. She hid in the bushes behind the trees. Hinata followed Goku outside when he left. She wanted to talk to him and apologize to him in person. Because she passed out or ran away each time Goku attempted to speak to her, Hinata wanted to apologize for her behavior, but she was afraid that Goku would view her as odd if she did so. Hinata recalled the first time she met Goku and how he helped her out by protecting her from bullies.

In the end, Hinata worked up the nerve to approach Goku and speak with him and to try to apologize, but just as she was about to emerge from her hiding place, Goku stood up and started making some moves. As they watched Goku move, both Hinata and Tamari were left in a state of shock due to this. Hinata had a sense of awe at Goku's commitment to his training. The movements brought to mind some aspects of the Gentle Fist practiced by her clan.

Goku had just finished his meditation and a quick workout. Goku noticed it was getting dark, so he decided to go back into the tower. As Goku was about to leave, he spoke.

Goku: Hey there! It's getting pretty late, girls. What do you all think about retiring for the night in the comfort of each of your own rooms?

When Tamari and Hinata found out that Goku had spotted both of them, they were both astonished. But what truly blew their minds was how Goku spoke, which indicated more than one person was watching him.

Goku went back inside the tower, and Tamari was about to return to her room when she saw Hinata come out from the trees. Goku went back inside the tower. Both Hinata and Tamari exchanged glances with one another.

Hinata/Tamari: Now I know the other person who observed Goku.

There were 19 finalists until Kakashi's team 7 arrived just in the nick of time, bringing the total number of finalists to a whopping 22. The fifth and final day of the second phase of the chunin exams had arrived as the clock was counting down to the last minute. In the previous four days, Goku spent his time with team 8 and team 10, and when he wasn't with them, Goku was either meditating and training.

Flashback!

During the last four days, Goku spent his time between teams 8 and 10, and while he wasn't with either of those teams, Goku was meditating or training on his hand-to-hand combat. On the fourth day, Ino saw Goku leaving the tower, and she was getting ready to follow him when all of a sudden, she saw Hinata following Goku as well. Ino was surprised because she had not seen Hinata follow Goku before. Hinata's sneaky departure caught Ino's interest as well, as she was on the run. Ino followed them both and discovered that Goku was meditating while Hinata was hidden behind some trees and watching him from a distance.

Ino: Hi Hinata, what are you doing?

Hinata: Ino!!

Ino: Keep your voice down, or else you will alert Goku that we are here. So tell me, why are you hiding and spying on Goku?

Hinata: You got it wrong, Ino. I'm not spying on him.

Ino could only smile to see how nervous Hinata was. She was red as a tomato, and she kept playing with her fingers, not making eye contact with her.

Ino: Child girl, I was curious when I saw you following Goku, so I decided to follow you. So tell me, why were you following Goku?

Hinata: Well, I was just interested in how he trains. He's always giving it his all.

Ino "to her self": This girl has fallen for him. But why does this make me a bit angry?

Ino: Come on, Hinata, let's go back and let Goku finish his training. We Shouldn't disturb him, plus it's getting dark.

End of Flashback

Everyone had gathered at the arena, including the team leaders and the Third Hokage.

Anko: First off, congratulations on

finishing the second exam. There were seventy-nine test takers for the second exam to have thought twenty-two made it this far.

Sakura: Hey guys, look, all Leaf Village rookies are here, too, including Goku.

Naruto: Wow, everybody is here; old man Hokage and Iruka Sensei, and even bushy brow are here. It looks like absolutely one got left out this time.

The thought that there are still this many is shocking. In addition to this, the vast majority of those who are still competing are rookies. And therefore, this is the reason why they fought so hard to endorse them. The Hokage thought this to himself as he turned around and saw Asuma, Kakashi, Kurenai, and Guy standing behind them.

Anko: Now then, we will now have

the explanation of the third exam from Lord Hokage. Listen carefully, maggots! Lord Hokage there, all yours.

Hokage: Before I start to explain the third exam, which we will begin right now, I want to make sure that everyone is aware of the real reason why we are doing these exams.

Sakura: The real reason.

Hokage: Why do allied nations conduct

the exams on a conjoint basis? Raising the levels of the shinobi and friendship among allied nations. It won't do to have the wrong idea of the true meaning of that statement. These exams are. A microcosm of battle between allied nations. If we look back on history, the allied nations of today were once neighboring nations

that continued to vie with each other and struggle for power. To avoid a futile crushing of each others' military strength,

those nations mutually selected a place to battle. And that was how the Chunin Exams originally began.

Naruto: W-Why do we have to do such a thing? Are we not doing this to select Chunins?

Hokage: There is no question that these exams are to select Shinobi worthy of becoming "Chunin." But on the other hand, these exams also provide a venue for Shinobi who carry their nation's pride on their backs to f*ght for their lives! Many feudal lords and those of prominence from many countries who request Shinobi for work are invited to this third exam as guests. And the feudal lords and Head Ninja of each Village of the nations will watch your battles. If the gap in national power becomes unbridgeable, the strong countries are flooded with job requests. The requests of nations deemed weak, on the other hand, decline. And therewithal, we can exert pressure upon each neighboring country. That is to say, just how much military strength our Village is developing and has. The nation's strength is the Village's strength. The Village's strength is the Shinobi's strength. And the true strength of the Shinobi is created only in a fight for one's life! This exam is a place to see the strength of the home country, Shinobi, and a place to display this. It is because it's an exam where you truly fight for your life that this has meaning. It's for this very reason that your forerunners fought in this exam, a dream worth aiming for.

Tenten: Then why use the expression friendship before?

Hokage: I said it at the start, didn't I? That it won't do for you to have the wrong idea of the meaning. It's a custom where balance is preserved by fighting and removing life. This is the friendship of the Shinobi world. The third exam is a fight for life with the pride of the village and one's dream on the line.

Naruto: Heh, I'm convinced.

Gaara: Anything is fine. Just tell us the content of that fight-for-life test. I can handle anything you throw at me.

Goku: This is getting boring. We all should have known once we became ninjas, our lives would be in danger and that the life of a Shinobi is not a long one.

Hokage: Now then, this is where I'd like to

explain the third exam.

?: Excuse me, Lord Hokage, please allow me, Hayate Gekko, who was given the task of judging, to speak first.

Hokage: I leave it to you.

Hayate: Nice to meet you, everyone. Umm, there's something. I'd like you all to do something before the third exam. We have to have a preliminary before going to the third exam, and before anyone of you questions this, it's because the first and second exams were easy. It should be clear to you by now that there are a few too many persons still present. A preliminary will be held in accordance with the rules of the Chunin Exams in order to cut down on the total number of candidates who move on to the next round. So in this stage, we need to speed up some things, and as Lord Hokage said, many guests will be coming to the third exam. So we can't have long, pointless matches, and our time is also limited. Therefore, those of you not in top physical condition can drop out. So please speak up now. The preliminary will begin immediately.

Kiba: Come on, you mean right now?

Ino: But some of us just finished fighting the last exams. Can we at least get a break?

Shikamaru: Man, what a drag.

Hayate: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this, but it will be individual battles from now on. So like I said, it's your decision, so feel free to raise your hands and drop out.

Sakura: Sasuke, you should quit these preliminaries! L-Look, you haven't been yourself ever since you got worked over by that Orochimaru guy! That mark hurts even now, right?

Did she say Orochimaru and mark? What mark is she talking about? Thought Goku to himself.

Sakura: You're in no condition to

fight properly, Sasuke.

Sasuke: Shut up, Sakura.

Sakura: I understand!

Sasuke: Be quiet!

Sakura: But you've been enduring the pain this whole time, right?!

Sasuke: Please be quiet!

Sakura: No matter what you say, Sasuke, I'm going to tell them about the mark!

Kabuto: I quit. I'm out. You got me.

Naruto: Kabuto, why? Why're you quitting? Tell me! Why?!

Kabuto: I'm sorry, Naruto. But my body is worn out. Actually, before the first exam, when I clashed with the guys from Sound Village, I had no hearing at all in my left ear. To fight right away and to be told that my life would also be on the line, I can't go on.

Hayate: Anyone else wants to quit no one? Okay then, now that we are down to 21 participants, one of you will have to fight twice. Do we have any who want to fight twice?

Goku: I do.

Hayate: Are you sure?

Goku: Did I stutter?

Hayate: Ok, then let me clarify some things. If you happen to win your first match but lose your second, you'll be disqualified. If you lose your first match but win the second one, you'll be able to move on to the third exam. Do you understand?

Goku: Sorry you said something. I wasn't paying any attention.

Hayate: No. Now let's move on to the preliminaries. Please, Anko, shows the screen.

Anko: Open the panel.

Hayate: The preliminaries to come will be one on one individual battles. In other words, actual battle format. There are no rules at all. You will fight until someone dies, collapses, or admits defeat. And please admit defeat right away if you don't want to die. However, if I judge

that a match is over, err, I don't want to increase dead bodies needlessly, so I will intervene and stop the match

or something to that effect. What holds the key to your destiny is. The names of two foes will be randomly selected and

displayed on this electronic signboard. Now then, let's get right down to it and announce the two names for the first battle. Sasuke Uchiha vs. Son Kakarot.

Sasuke: To think it'd be so soon.

Hayate: Now, the two names displayed on

the screen come forward. For the 1st battle, Sasuke Uchiha and Son Kakarot. Have been selected. Are there any objections?

Sasuke: None from me.

Goku: Yes, I do. I give up.
