Chapter 24 - New day

- Michael Sun

Today I woke up with this irritating pain in my neck; guess it was from the way I slept or something. Today was like any other Monday; wake up, get ready for work, grab a bite on the way, then enjoy the rest of my day around people I don't particularly like.

Smile and be friendly anyway; my mom always tells me, one day one of these people could help me reach my goals; I just have to play nice.

Tsk, I don't enjoy it but hey, at least I actually got the job I've wanted after a while. Today I go in as an official assistant to one of the lead scientists, she offered me the job even though I'm studying.

I'm only twenty but she says I've got a bright future; so why not start early. I recently started taking online classes so that I could spend more time learning from her, honestly helping her is the best part of this job.

Learning what she knows if amazing, she also the nicest person and funniest; she knows how to crack a joke every once in a while to ease the tension of the work unlike some of these other guys with sticks up their asses.

All in all everyone's got someone they cling onto when in a new environment; or just in general, for me its her and I'm not upset about it.

Walking up to the door, I paused taking a long look at the building in front of me. Breathing deeply, I scanned my badge and took a step through the doors of my new future.

Walking past security and towards the front desk I was greeted by the young man at the front desk:

"Ah Dr.Sun it's nice to see you again, hope you're doing well today."

"I am, thanks Sam. But it's a little to soon to be calling me doctor anything."

Sam's around my age, he's twenty three in a few weeks. He's been working here for a few years, nice guy; little chatty but I don't mind.

Honestly I'd say he's my only friend here so far, which is saying something for him, considering I don't like most people too much.

"Awe come on, you've been here for a while now, plus you've been under the wing of the top scientist here, whom might I add dragged you out of school to be here, and is paying for you to continue. I think that more than qualifies you to be called doctor."

He smiled at me as he said this, thinking about it, he was right but still; I hadn't exactly finished school yet so I'm still not technically anything.

"Thanks man, you know you're not as bad as everyone says you are. You're actually pretty cool."

I walked away with a smile on my face, but I could still clearly see the face he made in my mind.

"Wait what?!? Who said...."

"I'm just kidding, have a good day Sam."

I laughed as I waved back at him, as I walked away. I could only imagine the relief on his face.

Turning the corner I headed towards the elevator; I reluctantly greeted some of the others as I passed them by. Getting on I headed down towards the laboratory I worked in.

It wasn't too far from there, just a long walk towards the end of the hall and through some security measures and I will be safely working away, without being bothered.

As I walked down the hall I noticed some others talking nearby, they shuffled and quieted down when they saw me coming. It was weird to say the least, but I don't really care; I'll probably figure out why later.

Going past the security systems, I walked into the lab and headed over to set my stuff down in my area. It was a spot in the room that I thought seemed the most comforting, and no one minded when I made it my own.

Taking a seat I set up my laptop and turned on my computer, I currently had some research I was working on pulled up on the computer and my homework assignment on the laptop.

I silently tapped away at my chin with a pencil as I was thinking; trying not to mix the assignment with the research. I wrote my notes in a small notepad that I kept close by.

I know, not the smartest thing, having a notebook with valuable information in it, but at the moment it was the best thing I could think of to use, plus I used to write little inventions and theories I've had since I was a kid in there; so it only made sense.

"Ah Sun, glad you're here. Working hard or hardly working."

Dr. Maria Snow, a charming lady in her late twenties. She rose to the top at a young age; her research becoming very valuable in the way we lived today. That might be the reason she took a liking to me, might see a little of her in my childish eyes.

She chuckled to herself at the small joke, she was looking over my shoulder at my notes. Looking up at the screens she was quite interested in the research and the assignment, but she made it a point not to bother about my work unless absolutely necessary.

"Morning Dr.Snow, charming as ever. Did you need me for something."

Looking up at her I could see a small grin on her face as our eyes met, she grabbed my notebook and started to flip through the pages as she spoke:

"Yes, I need your help."

"With?"

"What do you think I should have for lunch today?"

She looked at me from behind the book, I could tell from the stupid grin she was trying to hide that I had pulled some kind of face.

"Hmmm I was thinking a pizza, but I had one yesterday, so then I was thinking sushi, but thinking about it; I wasn't really feeling it."

Is she joking right now.?. Fixing my face I decided, joke or not I should come up with something.

"How about a burger, or steak or something, could try some fruit maybe."

"You know what, those are some pretty good choices. Hmm the place down the street sells all of those."

Well I guess it wasn't a joke, and somehow I helped, I guess.

"Ah you know what that's a great choice, thanks."

She sat the notebook down as she turned to walk away, she had turned it back to what I was working on before she started to walk away.

"Oh and you're paying by the way, I'll come get ya later."

"Wait, what?"

"Yep, just thinking of it as a thank you for getting you in here. Plus it's just business, I have something to discuss with you, so don't get any weird ideas in that little head of yours."

She waved as she walked away with a smile on her face. I just sat there for a moment; wondering how I ended up having to go with her, and paying.

(Jeez didn't know I was in debt already.)

---

(Huh eight o'clock already, I must've gotten lost in my work. I should grab something on the way home.)

As I got up and packed my things I looked around the lab to see if Snow was still here, I let out a sigh of relief when I couldn't see her. If she was still here, I couldn't see her, meaning she can't see me.

I silently made my way to the door; as not to disturb anyone, and just in case she was still there and remembered.

As I reached to turn the handle of the door it opened on it's own and there she was looking at me with a slightly confused expression, a smug smile appeared on her face as she looked down at my bag.

"Trying to sneak off huh, or maybe you were hoping I was gone already. Either way I hadn't forgotten, since you're all ready to go I'll grab my stuff; you wait right here."

I let out a sigh as I stepped to the side and let her grab her things, as she made her way back she said goodbye to the others. Since they knew I was leaving now, I waved at them with a small smile.

Walking through the hall everyone had pretty much gone home, and those who were left were so absorbed in their work they hadn't noticed everyone else.

Walking through the lobby the overnight security was already at their posts and Sam was gone, we waved them goodnight as we walked out towards the parking garage.

The night lights were already on as we walked towards our spots, I had little hope of escaping but I tried anyway.

I slowly inched away from her as we walked trying to get to my car, but of course she knew what I was planning. She quickly grabbed my ear and ushered me towards her car.

"You drive, I'll talk."

I sighed as she tossed me the keys, walking over to my side I unlocked the car and put my stuff in the back, walking back to the front I was about to get in; until I saw her looking at me.

"Not gonna open my door, jeez they don't teach em right anymore."

I smirked as I walked over and opened the door, she thanked me as she as she got in; of course not before giving me a smug look as she thumped my forehead.

Walking back I got in and checked to see if there was a mark, it was small but it was there. I started the car, and headed out the garage towards the restaurant.

"So, what's this about?"

"It's about your research, I had some people look into the location you requested.... I think we found something."
