"Put on the light," he said.
Before Sophie or Dain could react, there was a sudden click, and the lights above flickered on, flooding the entire room with harsh, white brightness. It hit them like a wave—sharp, overwhelming, and blinding. Their eyes, adjusted to the deep darkness, had no time to prepare.
Dain turned his face to the side as far as the bounds could let him, blinking hard.
For a few seconds, neither of them could see anything but glowing white spots dancing in front of their vision. The sudden light felt like a physical force, too strong after being trapped in the dark for so long.
Sophie's eyes slowly adjusted, and as her vision cleared, so did her realization—and fear.
Her eyes widened in disbelief. He had actually turned the lights on.
A sick feeling settled in her stomach.
She was scared earlier, not not scared that's less, she was terrified rather.
The kind of fear that squeezed your chest until it felt like breathing was a privilege.
