"Untie his mouth," the voice commanded gleefully, the words thick with sadistic pleasure. "I want to hear him scream."
The chill in his voice made Sophie's heart lurch. Every word sounded like it was drenched in darkness.
"What the fuck is going on, you psychopath?" Dain's voice broke through the tension, sharp with anger and fear. His words were laced with desperation, though it didn't hide the fury in his tone. Sophie could hear him struggling against whatever restraint held him, the anger in his voice thick, almost as if he was daring whoever was in charge to try him.
"What game are you playing now?" he asked, his tone laced with curiosity as he wondered what she might be up to.
"Game, me?" The voice responded, feigning innocence. Dain made his familiar 'tsk' sound again, causing Sophie to look up at the sound she knew all too well.
"I'm not playing any games," he said, this time with a hint of sadness in his smile. "I just wonder why we seem to lack trust between us."
