Chapter 1: The Last Day of Normal

Rain streaked against the windows of Class 3-B, turning the outside world into a blur of gray. The kind of day where time seemed to hold its breath.

Kouji Sakamura sat in the far back corner of the room, chin resting on his palm, watching the raindrops race each other down the glass. He wasn't listening to the teacher. He wasn't listening to anything.

No one ever called on him. No one ever sat next to him. If ghosts were real, Kouji figured he was already halfway there.

He pulled his sleeve down to hide the strange, crescent-shaped birthmark on his hand. It had always been there, pulsing faintly when he was angry or scared. A weird quirk of genetics, or maybe a curse from whatever cosmic joke put him here.

His pencil rolled off the desk. He didn't bother picking it up.

The hum of classroom life carried on around him. Laughter. The rustle of paper. The occasional snore from the kid two rows ahead.

Then the world shifted.

A low, vibrating hum began to rise. Not from the lights, not from outside — it was coming from his desk.

He stared.

Symbols began to glow on the wood grain, like ancient runes twisting into shape. A soft, silver light pulsed from beneath his notebook.

"What the—?" he whispered.

And then everything went white.

Chapter 2: Eredel

Kouji was falling.

But there was no wind. No sky. Just blackness stretching in every direction and the sound of his own heartbeat thundering in his ears.

Then — ground.

He hit moss-covered soil hard enough to knock the air from his lungs.

Gasping, he rolled onto his side and looked up.

Two crescent moons hovered in the sky. Trees rose high above him, their leaves glowing faintly like lanterns. The air smelled like ozone and flowers that didn't exist back home.

This wasn't Earth. This wasn't a dream.

A growl cut through the night.

Kouji turned. A beast stalked through the glowing underbrush — six legs, two horns, and tusks that shimmered with a black liquid.

He tried to move. Couldn't.

The creature charged.

"Down!" a voice barked.

Thwip!

An arrow struck the beast between the eyes, and it crashed at Kouji's feet, dead.

A girl emerged from the shadows, bow in hand. She had pointed ears, silver hair, and a stare sharp enough to split steel.

"You trying to die on your first day here?" she asked, not waiting for an answer. "Get up."

Chapter 3: The Mark of the Veil

They made camp in a clearing. Kouji sat shivering by the fire, clutching his knees.

The girl — Lyra — didn't speak much. Just cleaned her arrows and kept one eye on him, as if he might explode.

Eventually, she approached and grabbed his hand. The crescent mark glowed faintly.

"Veilborn," she muttered.

"Veil-what?"

She let go and sat back. "You've got a mark from the other side. The Veil. It's... not good. People are scared of that symbol. Most would kill you just for having it."

Kouji's stomach twisted. "Great."

"Relax. I don't kill unless I'm paid."

Not exactly reassuring.

That night, he dreamed of a battlefield — dark clouds overhead, armies of monstrous creatures kneeling before a figure cloaked in black fire.

The figure turned.

It was him.

Chapter 4: Echoes of the Self

Kouji woke in a cold sweat. The fire had gone out.

Lyra was gone.

He panicked for a moment, then spotted her returning with a rabbit over her shoulder.

"Still breathing? Impressive."

"Thanks," he muttered.

They traveled together for days. Lyra was sharp, practical, and had a dry sense of humor that reminded him he was still alive.

But every night, the dreams returned.

The battlefield. The fire. The whispers calling him "King."

Chapter 5: Corrupted Steel

They reached a village. Kouji kept his hood up, eyes down.

But people noticed. They whispered. A child cried and clung to her mother's skirts.

"Why are they looking at me like that?" he whispered.

"You're glowing," Lyra muttered. "Tone it down."

Before he could ask what she meant, the crowd scattered. A knight clad in black armor stepped into the square. His eyes were hollow. His voice cracked like ice.

"Veilborn," the knight hissed. "You shall not awaken."

The crowd backed away.

Kouji couldn't breathe.

The knight raised his blade.

Lyra leapt in front of him, arrow nocked — but too late.

The blade slashed across her shoulder. She hit the ground hard.

"NO!"

Kouji felt the world lurch.

Something inside him snapped.

Chapter 6: Nyxblade

Time slowed.

The air around Kouji shimmered. His veins felt like they were filled with lightning.

A blade of shadow formed in his hand, long and curved like a crescent moon.

He stepped forward, almost in a trance.

The knight swung again. Kouji raised the blade — it met steel, and shattered it.

The knight crumpled to the ground.

Kouji looked at the weapon in his hand. It pulsed with the same glow as his mark.

Lyra, bleeding but conscious, whispered, "You really are... Veilborn."

Chapter 7: To Choose a Path

They left the village in silence.

Kouji couldn't look at her. Couldn't look at his own hands.

"I didn't want to hurt him," he said finally.

"You saved us."

"But I felt nothing when I cut him down."

Lyra was quiet for a long moment.

"You don't have to become the god they think you are," she said. "You can still choose who you want to be."

Chapter 8: The Whispering Ruins

They traveled to the ruins of an ancient city — Veyrun — once the capital of the Veilborn Kingdom.

Spirits clung to the stone walls. Some whispered. Some screamed.

Inside, a relic waited.

The Nyxblade.

Kouji approached the pedestal. The blade rose, hovering above it.

Memories not his own flooded him.

Wars. Coronations. Betrayals.

He saw his past life — a king with no mercy, no heart, no soul.

"I don't want this," Kouji whispered.

The blade hovered in place.

"But I'll carry it. And I'll do it differently."

The Nyxblade accepted him.

Chapter 9: Eyes from Above

Far above the ruins, on a rocky outcropping, a figure cloaked in golden robes watched through a spyglass.

"The Veilborn has returned," he muttered.

A dozen armored knights stood behind him.

"Shall we move?"

The man turned.

"Not yet. Let him remember who he was."

He smiled.

"Then we'll remind him what he did."

Chapter 10: The First Step

Kouji and Lyra stood at the gates of the ruin.

She looked at him differently now — not with fear, but respect. Maybe even hope.

"You're not alone," she said.

"For the first time," Kouji replied, "I know that."

He turned to the horizon.

The war hadn't started yet.

But it would.

And when it did… he'd be ready.
