Chapter 28 - One Year Later (Bonus Epilogue)

The scent of vanilla cupcakes drifted through the air as laughter filled the backyard. Balloons in soft pink and cream danced in the gentle breeze, tied to chairs and trees. A small banner hung over the patio, swaying slightly with each gust of wind:

"Happy 1st Birthday, Eliana!"

Lyra stood by the cake table, straightening paper plates for the fifth time. Everything had to be perfect — even though Eliana didn't understand what any of it meant. She was more interested in chewing on her shoelace than celebrating.

Zane walked over, arms slipping easily around Lyra's waist from behind. His lips brushed her cheek. "She's officially one," he murmured. "And somehow we survived."

Lyra laughed softly, leaning into him. "Barely."

They looked toward the center of the yard where Eliana toddled around in her princess-themed onesie, one hand covered in frosting, the other dragging her stuffed bunny by the ear.

"She's a tornado," Zane said proudly.

"She's your tornado."

"No, no — she's definitely got your sass. Don't blame me."

Eliana shrieked with joy as one of Zane's cousins scooped her up and spun her gently. Guests milled around — close friends, family members, even Lyra's mom who had warmed to Zane far more than anyone expected.

They hadn't gotten married yet. The ring was still in the drawer where Zane had hidden it months ago. They agreed there was no rush — no pressure to perform some picture-perfect timeline.

Instead, they'd focused on building something real.

Zane moved in shortly after Eliana was born. Their apartment was now full of pacifiers, baby shoes, and half-sipped coffee mugs. Some days were exhausting. Others, even more so. But every single one of them was worth it.

"You good?" he asked her now, eyes watching her closely.

Lyra nodded. "More than good."

Her mother walked over with a small wrapped box. "Not for Eliana," she said, handing it to Lyra. "This one's for you."

Lyra raised a brow, surprised. She untied the ribbon carefully and opened the lid. Inside was a delicate gold bracelet with one word engraved into the center:

Enough.

Her throat tightened instantly. Her mother placed a hand gently on her shoulder. "You've always been more than enough. I just thought it was time you knew."

Lyra didn't speak — just hugged her tightly, blinking back unexpected tears.

Later that evening, when the last guest had gone home and Eliana was fast asleep in her crib, Lyra sat in the nursery rocking chair, the soft nightlight casting golden stars on the walls. Zane came in quietly, holding two mugs of tea.

"She's out?" he asked.

"Like a light."

He handed her the tea and sat on the floor beside her, resting his head on her knee. "You did amazing today."

"So did you."

They stayed like that for a moment — soaking in the silence. The peace. The truth that they'd made it through a full year of parenthood, together.

Lyra picked up her phone and opened a fresh note. She stared at the blinking cursor, then began to type:

To Eliana — From Mom

You probably won't remember this day, but I always will.

One year ago, you came into the world and turned mine upside down. You made me braver. You made me softer. You made me whole.

I didn't think I'd be good at this — at love, at motherhood, at trusting someone else to stay.

But then you arrived. And everything changed.

You showed me that real love is messy, loud, exhausting, and beautiful. You gave my life a new story. One I didn't even know I was allowed to write.

Thank you for choosing me, Eliana. I hope you always know how deeply, fiercely, and endlessly you are loved.

Love always,

Mom.

She stared at the screen for a long moment before hitting save. Then she looked over at Zane, whose eyes were already closed. She whispered, "Zane?"

"Hm?"

"I think we're doing okay."

He smiled without opening his eyes. "We're doing better than okay."

And in that quiet nursery, with their daughter asleep and their hearts finally steady, Lyra knew it was true.

This was their family.

Not perfect. Not easy.

But real.

And theirs.

Forever.
