Chapter 7 - Chapter 4: The First Offer

The message came at 2:06 p.m.

I was sitting cross-legged on the floor, trying to fix the zipper on one of Amma's old cushion covers when my phone buzzed.

I expected another hate comment.Or worse — sympathy.

But instead, the email subject read:

"We'd Like You to Model for Us — You're the Face We Need."

At first, I thought it was spam.A scam. A prank.

Then I read the signature.

PRIVÈ BY RAVINALuxury. Redefined.

One of the most elite fusion brands in India. Worn by movie stars. Sponsored by royalty. Known for being ruthless about their models.

And they were emailing me?

I blinked.

Then blinked again.

"Dear Miss Sharma,We were deeply moved by your recent story. But more than that, we were inspired. The quiet confidence in your presence — standing on a street corner in a simple kurti, head held high — is exactly what our next campaign is about.Real elegance. Real strength. Real roots. You are not a face we want to use.You are the face we want to honor."

I didn't reply for ten minutes.

Not because I wasn't excited.

Because I wasn't sure if I was allowed to be.

Just three days ago, I was being kicked out of a mansion in plastic slippers. Now, a luxury brand wanted to drape me in silk and photograph me like I was a goddess?

Was this real?

Or was this just another story where they pull the ladder away the moment I start climbing?

Still… I typed a reply. Simple. Direct.

"I don't model.But I stand for what I believe in.If that's what you want to capture, I'm listening."

I hit send before I could delete it.

Within three minutes, I got a response.

"We'll send a car tomorrow. You'll have full control. We don't want to change you, Kalyani. We want the world to finally see you."

The next morning, a sleek black SUV arrived at the slum entrance.

The little girls who used to tug on my sleeves and beg for Parle-G biscuits surrounded me now — wide-eyed.

"Didi, are you famous now?" one of them whispered.

I knelt down beside her.

"Not yet," I said softly, "But maybe this is how it starts."

I got into the car without looking back.

Because this time, I wasn't being driven away from something.I was being driven towards everything I never asked for… but always deserved.
