Chapter 54 - Sin #9 — Arguing or Quarreling

"It is to one's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel."

— Proverbs 20:3 (NIV)

Arguing is often seen as a sign of passion or strength—but Scripture tells a different story. In God's eyes, a quarrelsome spirit reflects pride, foolishness, and a lack of peace. It damages relationships, inflames tempers, and pushes others away from the truth.

Quarreling: A Heart Issue

Arguments don't begin in the mouth. They begin in the heart. James tells us that quarrels arise from desires within us—selfish ambitions, unmet wants, and wounded pride.

"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?"

— James 4:1 (NIV)

Most arguments aren't about truth—they're about control. About being right. About winning. And that mindset leaves no room for humility, grace, or reconciliation.

When Words Become Weapons

A quarrelsome tongue can:

Tear families and friendships apart

Divide churches and ministries

Create hostility in marriages

Stir confusion and distrust

Hinder the work of the Holy Spirit

Even if your argument is "correct," the spirit behind it might still be wrong. Truth shared without love becomes a hammer, not a healing balm.

"Avoid foolish controversies... because these are unprofitable and useless."

— Titus 3:9 (NIV)

Reflection Questions

Do I argue to prove a point—or to pursue peace?

Do I listen to understand—or just wait to respond?

Do my debates reflect the humility of Christ?

Am I stirring up strife more than I'm sowing peace?

Challenge: Be a Peacemaker, Not a Provoker

This week, choose silence over shouting. Choose humility over heat. Let God fight your battles and lead your conversations. Ask Him to help you discern when to speak—and when to let go.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

— Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

Prayer for a Quiet Spirit

"Father, I ask You to quiet my spirit. Too often I've spoken out of pride, anger, or impatience. I've tried to win arguments instead of winning souls. Forgive me for using my tongue to stir division. Teach me to speak with grace and truth—and to know when to hold my peace. Let my words build bridges, not walls. Help me become a peacemaker, reflecting Your heart. In Jesus' name, Amen."
