"Let no one be found among you who… practices divination or sorcery… or who casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord."
— Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NIV)
Incense and oils have long been used as part of spiritual expression. In Scripture, fragrant offerings were part of Israel's worship to the one true God. But throughout history, similar elements—incense, scented candles, anointing oils, and herbs—have been adopted into occult practices, often meant to invite spirits, cast spells, or channel energies. These rituals may appear harmless or even spiritual, but behind them lies a system of worship rooted in deception.
God does not oppose incense itself—but He fiercely opposes its use in any context that calls on powers other than Him.
Fragrance Is Not Always Holy
In modern times, spiritual-sounding practices have become mainstream: sage-burning for "cleansing energy," aroma rituals to "open your third eye," oils to invoke "ancestral spirits," or candles used in witchcraft and manifestation spells. Many are drawn in by the beauty, peace, or mysticism of it all.
But God is clear: do not mix His worship with pagan practices. No matter how innocent the smell or calming the ritual, if it draws you away from Christ or involves contact with spiritual forces apart from Him, it becomes an abomination, not worship.
"Do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there." — Deuteronomy 18:9
Application: Discern the Source, Not Just the Scent
Not every incense stick, oil, or scent is sinful—but the purpose behind it matters deeply. If the fragrance is tied to spiritual control, energy manipulation, ancestral reverence, or occult activity, then you are walking on forbidden ground.
Ask yourself:
Am I using scents, herbs, or rituals for spiritual purposes apart from God?
Have I opened doors through practices I don't fully understand?
Am I drawn more to mystical peace than to Christ's presence?
The Holy Spirit brings peace without mixture. You don't need incense to reach heaven—just a surrendered heart.
Prayer for Purity in Worship
Lord, I renounce every spiritual practice I've participated in that does not honor You. Cleanse my home and my heart from anything rooted in darkness or deception. I want nothing to do with rituals that offend Your holiness. Let my worship be pure. Fill my life with Your Spirit, and lead me into truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
