Chapter 11: A Delicate Dance in the Renaissance
The Waverider hummed a different tune now, not just the drone of its temporal engines, but a subtle undercurrent of heightened tension and grim resolve. The victory in ancient Egypt, the temporary disruption of Savage's power, had been a crucial turning point, yet it had also served as a stark reminder: Vandal Savage was still out there, still immortal, and now, he knew they were directly interfering. The stakes had been raised.
Rip Hunter, a man perpetually burdened by the fate of the timeline, had a renewed fire in his eyes. He stood before the holographic display in the bridge, a map of 15th-century Italy glowing brightly. "Our intelligence indicates that Savage, following the disruption of his power in Egypt, has retreated to one of his more established strongholds in this period. Specifically, a hidden stronghold beneath a burgeoning art academy in Florence, 1478."
Adam leaned against the console, already scanning the historical data on the display. "Ah, the Renaissance. Birthplace of art, science, and apparently, immortal supervillain hideouts. I hear the gelato is to die for, though, so swings and roundabouts."
Sara, standing beside him, nudged him with her elbow. "Focus, Anomaly. Savage isn't going to be serving ice cream."
"A man can dream, Canary," Adam retorted, a playful glint in his eye, though his internal monologue was far more serious. 'Florence, 1478. Renaissance. Savage. Okay, so no specific episodes from this period come to mind immediately, but I know the general vibe. Lots of intrigue, powerful families, hidden chambers. And Savage would be trying to consolidate power, manipulating the influential. This is where he'd be recruiting, rebuilding his magical strength.'
Rip continued, oblivious to Adam's internal musings. "Our primary objective is twofold: First, to confirm Savage's presence and gauge the extent of his renewed magical capabilities. Second, we've identified a rare alchemical text, 'The Chronos Alchemia,' believed to contain specific knowledge on temporal energy manipulation, which could be critical for solidifying our counter-ritual against Savage's meteor-based power. It is rumored to be held in a private collection within this very academy."
"So, basically, a stealth mission into an evil Hogwarts, but with more beheadings and less friendly giants?" Adam quipped. "Got it. My specialty."
"Not quite stealth, Mr. Stiels," Professor Stein interjected. "Savage is aware of our interference. Gideon's long-range scans indicate a significantly increased magical and security presence around this academy. He will be expecting us."
"Which means we need to be smarter," Snart observed, polishing the barrel of his cold gun. "Not harder. Infiltrate, grab the book, get out. No fireworks."
Mick grunted, clearly disappointed at the lack of promised fire.
"Exactly, Mr. Snart," Rip agreed. "We will pose as scholars, artists, or patrons, gaining access to the academy. Adam, your… historical knowledge and ability to blend in will be key. And your hypnotic abilities could prove invaluable for acquiring information discreetly."
"Oh, so I'm the charming, intellectual rogue now?" Adam grinned. "I can work with that. Just need a monocle and a witty anecdote about the geopolitical implications of bread prices in feudal Europe."
They prepped quickly. Ray worked on modifying the Atom suit for subtle reconnaissance and data acquisition. Stein and Jax prepared a new fire-dampening agent for Firestorm, hoping to counter any magical flames. Sara and Rip went over infiltration routes and security schematics.
Adam, meanwhile, used the Waverider's extensive database to brush up on 15th-century Florentine customs, fashion, and social hierarchies. He also spent time in the cargo bay, silently pushing his telekinetic abilities. He wasn't just moving objects anymore; he was trying to feel the resistance, the subtle eddies in the air, the internal structure of the objects. He experimented with multiple targets, simultaneously lifting a collection of tools, then neatly arranging them into a precarious tower, each piece perfectly balanced. He felt a stronger, more fluid connection, an extension of his will. He tried to mimic Savage's earlier attacks, focusing his energy into a directed push, not just a blunt shove, but a precise, almost surgical strike. He could feel the energy humming in his hands, ready to be unleashed.
'Okay, Anomaly. Time to prove you're more than just a meat shield and a punchline. Savage is hunting us. This is a chess match. And I'm pretty good at chess, especially when I know a few of the opponent's moves. Let's see how well he anticipates a sarcastic, regenerating time-traveler who can move things with his mind.'
Disguises were chosen. Rip was a visiting professor, Stein a renowned philosopher, Ray a curious inventor, Jax his eager apprentice. Mick was… Mick, disguised as Rip's grumpy bodyguard, which was barely a disguise. Snart was a wealthy, enigmatic collector. Sara, elegant and striking, was a travelling noblewoman. Adam, surprisingly, cleaned up well in period attire, presenting himself as a budding scholar with an unusually modern wit.
Their infiltration was textbook. They blended in with the throngs of scholars, artists, and wealthy patrons visiting the prestigious academy. Adam, in particular, found himself surprisingly at ease, engaging in animated discussions about classical texts and burgeoning scientific theories, occasionally dropping a subtly anachronistic but insightful observation that both intrigued and baffled his conversation partners.
While the others sought out their various objectives, Adam's primary goal was reconnaissance and information gathering, using his hypnosis. He targeted minor academy staff, low-level cultists disguised as guards, and even a few gossip-prone servants. He honed his hypnotic skills, making his suggestions more subtle, less demanding. He could now plant a thought, a fleeting image, a desire to "accidentally" leave a door ajar or to "remember" a piece of information they didn't know they knew.
He found a librarian, an elderly, stooped man with thick spectacles and a nervous twitch. Adam engaged him in a conversation about rare manuscripts. As the librarian rambled on, Adam subtly, almost imperceptibly, focused his hypnotic influence. 'You will remember a hidden passage. A passage leading to the restricted section. It is not listed in any index. Only a select few know of its existence. You will feel compelled to show me, to share this secret with a kindred spirit.'
The librarian paused, a flicker of confusion, then recognition in his eyes. "Ah, young scholar, you have an astute mind. Indeed, there is a passage… a secret known to few. Follow me, if you wish to see truly ancient wisdom."
The passage led to a dusty, rarely used section of the academy's vast library, a place where older, more dangerous tomes were kept under lock and key. Adam knew this was Savage's doing. His influence seeped into every corner. He felt a faint, dark magical resonance in the air, confirming Savage's presence, or at least that of his inner circle.
Meanwhile, Sara was engaged in a tense encounter. While scouting, she had come across two robed figures, clearly Savage's elite guards, attempting to abduct a young, talented artist who had inadvertently stumbled upon a hidden symbol of Savage's cult. Sara, relying on her stealth and combat prowess, engaged them. She moved like a phantom, her fists and feet blurring, but these cultists were more powerful than the last, imbued with minor magical enhancements. They moved faster, their blows carried an unnatural force.
Just as one of them lunged at her with an enchanted blade, Adam, having tracked Sara's movements mentally, burst through a hidden door, alerted by the subtle psychic disturbance he'd picked up. He saw the glint of the blade, the speed of the attack, and reacted instinctively.
He didn't just push the cultist. He focused his telekinetic energy, not into a blunt force, but a directed, disruptive wave. The cultist staggered, his movements seizing up, as if his muscles had momentarily rebelled against his will. His enchanted blade clattered to the floor.
"Didn't your mother teach you not to play with sharp objects, Sparky?" Adam quipped, already moving, his regeneration subtly correcting for a minor graze he'd sustained earlier.
The second cultist, enraged, lunged at Adam, attempting a magical attack similar to Savage's earlier blast. Adam reacted, not by shielding, but by attempting to deflect. He held out his hand, focusing, and a faint, shimmering blue field, barely visible, flickered around him. The dark energy blast hit the field, distorted, and was partially redirected, slamming into a nearby stone pillar instead of Adam, causing dust and debris to shower down.
It wasn't a perfect deflection, a fraction of the magical energy still slammed into his side, making him grunt in pain, a sharp, burning sensation spreading across his ribs. 'Okay, so I can deflect some of it. Not all. Good to know. But progress! '
Sara, seizing the moment of distraction, disarmed and knocked out the first cultist. She then moved with lightning speed, disabling the second, who was still trying to recover from Adam's telekinetic deflection.
"Are you okay?" Sara asked, her voice laced with concern, looking at the spot on Adam's side where the magical energy had hit. She could see his shirt slightly singed, the flesh beneath already beginning to regenerate, but slower than normal.
Adam winced, pressing a hand to his side. "Peachy keen, Jelly Bean. Just a minor magical fender bender. No biggie. Mostly. Still stings like a thousand angry hornets, but it's healing." He shot a quick look at the unconscious cultists. "These guys are a definite step up. More coordinated. More… magically enhanced. Savage is really stepping up his game."
"He knows we're here," Sara stated grimly. "Or at least, he knows someone is interfering. We need to be careful." She looked at him, a flicker of something in her eyes. "That deflection… that was new. Impressive."
Adam shrugged, trying to be casual. "Just practicing my party tricks. Never know when you'll need to deflect an evil wizard's bad vibes. Now, where were we? Ah, yes. Infiltrating an evil Hogwarts to steal a magical textbook. Exciting times."
They regrouped with the others. Ray, using his suit's scanning capabilities, had located the "Chronos Alchemia" within the restricted section Adam had just found. Stein and Jax confirmed Savage's significant magical presence in the academy's deeper levels, but also noted a fluctuating signature, suggesting Savage himself might be moving or temporarily elsewhere, perhaps consolidating his power.
Snart, having observed the incident with the cultists from a distance, raised an eyebrow at Adam. "You're getting better at this, Anomaly. That was almost… graceful. For you."
"High praise coming from the master of frozen precision," Adam quipped, feeling a little less pained now that his regeneration was catching up. "I'm learning from the best. And the most charmingly criminal, of course."
The retrieval of the book itself was fraught with peril. The restricted section was protected by arcane wards and automated traps. Adam used his telekinesis to trigger a pressure plate from afar, disarm a magical tripwire, and even subtly alter the trajectory of a magically propelled dart aimed at Ray, sending it harmlessly into a wall. His enhanced control allowed for a delicate manipulation of the environment, creating pathways and neutralizing threats that brute force couldn't.
Ray, meanwhile, used his shrinking ability to bypass a locked magical barrier, retrieving the ancient text. It was heavier than it looked, bound in dark leather with strange, shimmering glyphs on its cover.
As they made their escape, a small detachment of Savage's elite cultists, alerted by their activity, confronted them. This time, the cultists were prepared, wielding more powerful magical attacks. One conjured a wall of flame, another sent a volley of sharp, magically imbued stones hurtling towards them.
"Firestorm!" Rip commanded.
Jax and Stein merged, unleashing a powerful energy blast that shattered the stone volley and momentarily dispersed the wall of flame. Mick provided cover fire, pushing back the remaining cultists. Snart used his cold gun to freeze the ground, making the cultists slip and stumble.
Adam, seeing a cultist channeling a particularly strong dark spell towards Rip, didn't hesitate. He thrust his hand forward, focusing all his energy. A more solid, shimmering blue shield of telekinetic energy bloomed before Rip, intercepting the magical blast head-on. The shield held, vibrating violently, absorbing the impact, then shattered with a soft pop, sending faint blue sparks into the air. Adam stumbled back a step, a sharp pain radiating through his arm, but Rip was unharmed.
"My sincerest apologies for the minor psychic headache, Captain," Adam grunted, rubbing his arm. "But you're welcome."
Rip, looking stunned but grateful, simply nodded. "Remarkable, Mr. Stiels. Truly remarkable."
As the Legends retreated, Adam looked back at the academy, sensing the lingering dark magic, but also a new sense of achievement. They had gotten the book. They had survived a direct confrontation with Savage's empowered forces. And he had, for the first time, actively and successfully deflected a significant magical attack. He was learning. He was growing.
'Savage, you're playing chess. But I know a few moves from future games. And I'm getting better at this board. This is just the beginning. And next time, I'm going to deflect that magic right back at you.'
Back on the Waverider, as Ray began the painstaking process of scanning the ancient text, Adam watched, a sense of grim satisfaction settling over him. Their strategy was working. They were making progress. But he knew, with a certainty that chilled him, that Savage would not take this lying down. The stakes were only going to get higher. And his own powers, now adapting to magical threats, would be pushed to their limits.
