Chapter 1 - 1. TWO LINES

"Congratulations, Mrs. Carter… you're pregnant."

Valerie froze.

The words hit harder than she expected. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She sat perfectly still on the clinic bench, clutching her purse like a lifeline.

The doctor smiled warmly. "Based on your last period and the scan, you're about one month along."

One month.

A wave of nausea emotional, not physical swept over her.

Because she knew.

It wasn't Daniel's.

Her mind went blank. Her vision blurred. Her heart pounded so loud she could barely hear anything else the doctor said. She nodded in silence, excused herself politely, and locked herself in the restroom.

She stood in front of the mirror, shaking.

What had she done?

Her fingers slipped into her purse and pulled out the printed ultrasound photo. The tiny smudge. The dot that had the power to destroy everything.

Her husband Daniel had been away during that time. Berlin. Or at least that's what he told her.

But Adrian… he hadn't been away. He had been right there at their old bar. The only man who ever made her feel safe.

The night she saw him again was the night she broke her own rules.

Valerie swallowed the lump in her throat. Her trembling fingers tore the photo in two, dropping it in the trash. Then she added a tissue, makeup wipes, anything to cover it.

She didn't need evidence.

Not when her entire life could burn down with just one mistake.

Her phone buzzed.

Daniel – 2 Missed Calls

Message: Where the hell are you? The driver said you stopped at a clinic.

Her breath caught in her chest.

How did he already know?

She quickly typed a response.

Me: I wasn't feeling well. Just a check-up.

Daniel: You know I don't like secrets, Valerie.

Her fingers trembled. She turned off her phone and pressed it to her chest, drawing a shaky breath.

This wasn't a secret.

It was survival.

The car ride home was quiet. She didn't say a word to the driver. She couldn't.

Her thoughts kept circling the same horrifying truth.

She was carrying a baby that didn't belong to her husband.

She stepped out of the black SUV and into the marble-floored penthouse she used to dream of. But nothing about it felt like home.

Daniel wasn't back yet.

Good.

She walked straight to the bedroom, locked the bathroom door, and sat down on the cold tiled floor.

One month pregnant.

One lie away from destruction.

She'd thought marrying Daniel would be her escape from poverty, from uncertainty, from a future she feared. But all she'd done was trap herself in a golden cage. A beautiful, suffocating cage where even her thoughts had to be silent.

When she finally returned to the living room hours later, Daniel was already home.

He stood by the window, phone in hand, suit jacket off, whiskey glass in the other.

He turned slowly when he heard her heels.

"You were at the clinic," he said. No warmth. Just suspicion.

Valerie nodded calmly. "It was just a check-up."

He walked toward her, eyes scanning her face.

"You've been acting strange lately," he said slowly. "Is there something I should know?"

She smiled, soft and practiced. "No, Daniel."

A beat of silence.

Then he stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Good. I'd hate to be disappointed."

Her smile didn't falter.

But inside, her body screamed.

That night, after he fell asleep beside her, Valerie turned her phone back on.

One new message.

Unknown Number:

"Is he still hitting you?"

She stared at it, heart hammering.

Who knew?

And how much?
