The look on Fiona's face when I showed her my investment portfolio was almost worth enduring this entire dinner. Her eyes widened, mouth slightly agape before she caught herself and snapped it shut.
"That's... impossible," she sputtered, staring at the screen showing a return that had doubled Mrs. Dubois's initial investment.
I pocketed my phone, keeping my expression neutral. "Not impossible. Just strategic investment."
Mrs. Dubois reached across the table and touched my hand. "Is that true, Elara? You doubled the money?"
I nodded. "Yes. I meant to tell you privately, but since Fiona brought it up..."
"Well done," Mrs. Dubois said, her face lighting up with genuine pride. She turned to Alistair. "See? I told you she was clever with finances."
Alistair merely grunted, refusing to meet my gaze. I wasn't surprised. In all my years living under his roof, I'd never once received acknowledgment from him.
