🌍🔥 THE DRAGON OF IRON

Chapter 7 — Wings of the Future

---

Southern Free State — Construction Site Alpha — Dawn

The first rays of sun glimmered on the half-finished airfield, vast swaths of red earth already flattened into gleaming runways by industrial graders. Massive hangar skeletons rose over the plain like the ribs of titanic beasts. Conveyor trucks groaned under the weight of steel beams, while power-armored engineers guided sections into place with precise servo-assisted movements.

Willem du Toit stood on an improvised observation platform, boots planted in the churned dirt. His visor displayed real-time overlays of the entire project: fuel storage tanks, radar arrays, munitions bunkers.

> [Construction Status:]

Runway 1: 45%

Hangars A & B: 30%

Control Tower: 25%

Logistics Hub: 40%

Beside him, Steyn's eyes were red from lack of sleep. He scrubbed a hand over his stubble. "It's…impossible, sir. We'd need months to finish this, even with the drones."

Willem's voice was low, matter-of-fact. "Then we will work night and day until it's done."

Steyn didn't argue. He simply exhaled and nodded.

Below, a squad of auxiliaries—freshly conscripted locals—struggled to maneuver crates of fuel pumps. A foreman barked orders in a mix of Afrikaans and a local dialect. The young men moved with that brittle mixture of fear and wonder that Willem had seen on every battlefield.

They will learn, he thought.

---

— 40km North — A Ridge Overlooking the Valley

A rift split the morning sky, violet lightning crackling across the air.

Three Devils materialized in silence. The armored Bael emissary led the way, his massive wings folding against his back. Behind him, the scholar devil consulted a sheaf of parchment covered in glowing runes.

"This is the anomaly's seat of power," the armored one said, voice like a furnace. "Impressive for such a primitive creature."

The woman in white traced a finger along her jaw, smiling. "Steel, oil, fire…men have always been adept at slaughter."

"Can it threaten us?" the scholar murmured.

The Bael devil considered. "Perhaps. If it is allowed to grow unchecked."

The woman's smile sharpened. "Then we will test it."

---

— Command Center — Noon

Willem hunched over the main console, studying the first schematics of the Oryx stealth multirole fighter. A marvel of composite alloys and radar-deflecting geometry, it would be the spearhead of his coming air superiority.

A chime sounded.

> [Recon Drone Alert — Unidentified Energy Signature Detected]

He keyed the magnified feed. The live video showed the ridge—and three winged shapes studying his airfield from afar.

He frowned.

"Zoom."

The drone's camera clarified. Black and red armor. Bat-like wings.

Devils.

He tapped the console.

> "Steyn."

Steyn's voice crackled through his earpiece, weary but alert. "Sir?"

"Scramble the T-60 squads to defensive positions. Bring the Cheetah tanks forward. No hostile engagement unless they cross the river."

"Yes, sir."

---

— Field Trenches — Perimeter Defense

T-60 power armor squads took up positions along newly dug emplacements. Their heavy autocannons were calibrated for maximum elevation, the barrels tracking the sky.

Steyn walked among them, shouting orders.

"Maintain fire discipline. These are not tribesmen. If they come, you fire for the head and center mass."

One of the auxiliaries—a local boy no older than seventeen—raised his hand, voice quavering. "Sergeant…what are they?"

Steyn's jaw tightened. "Devils."

The boy's eyes went wide. "Like…the stories?"

Steyn didn't look at him. "Stories can't kill you. These can."

— World Channel —

> [@RedClaw]:

"The Bael scouts have reached the Southern Warlord's territory."

[@IronWolf]:

"If they decide to invade, he's finished."

[@AshenQueen]:

"Perhaps. But he is not as primitive as you think."

[@AzureMatron]:

"Does he even know we watch him?"

[@CrimsonArbitress]:

"No. And that is his greatest weakness."

---

— Airfield Alpha — Twilight

Construction continued under massive floodlights. Steel plates clanged into position. Power lines snaked across fresh trenches. Fuel storage tanks were lowered into reinforced bunkers.

Willem walked the length of the main runway, visor HUD casting data in his periphery.

This will be the artery of my next conquest, he thought. No reincarnator, no devil, no would-be king can match air power.

A comm ping interrupted his thoughts.

> "Sir, Cheetah command reports movement on the ridge."

He turned toward the dark line of hills. In the dying light, three shapes rose into the air—winged silhouettes that glowed faintly with demonic energy.

The Devils did not descend. They hovered, watching.

Steyn's voice was hushed. "What do you suppose they're thinking, sir?"

Willem's gaze was unblinking. "That we are ants."

He lifted his chin slightly.

And that will be their mistake.

---

— Far North — Rift Citadel

Within the obsidian fortress, the Devils reappeared in a circle of lightning. They bowed before a towering figure robed in midnight-black silk.

"What did you see?" the archdevil demanded.

The Bael emissary straightened. "Industry. Precision. A will as cold as any devil's."

"Does he fear us?"

The woman in white laughed softly. "No. He does not understand us enough to fear."

"Then enlighten him."

---

— Command Center — Midnight

Willem sat alone, the holo-map of southern South Africa hovering before him. Every settlement, every railway spur, every refinery glimmered in blue overlays.

He keyed the console.

> [Production Queue:]

Oryx Stealth Fighter — Prototype: 14 Days

Cheetah MBTs — 5 Units: 4 Days

T-60 Suits — 3 Squads: 3 Days

Logistic Trucks — 10 Units: 2 Days

He exhaled, exhaustion scraping at his bones. But he did not close his eyes.

When they come—and they will—I will be ready.

He tapped the table once.

> "Begin airfield expansion phase two."

---

— Near the River — Dawn

The Devils returned. This time, they did not merely watch.

They descended in a flare of violet fire, landing less than a kilometer from the forward trenches.

Steyn was first to react. He toggled the comm, voice taut.

> "Sir—they've crossed the river."

Willem's HUD flickered red. He lifted the mic.

> "Hold positions. Do not fire unless fired upon."

In the predawn gloom, the Devils strode calmly toward the trenches—three apex predators observing the creatures of the anthill.

At last, the armored one spoke, his voice echoing like a church bell.

"Warlord of Iron," he called, though his eyes were fixed on the tanks and the men behind them, "do you think this steel will save you?"

Willem stepped up onto a rampart. His amplified voice rang out clear and cold.

"I don't think," he said. "I know."

---

— Molapo Valley — Reeducation Camp

Auxiliaries drilled in ranks, rifles held across their chests. Instructors barked commands in Afrikaans and the local tongue, forging soldiers from conquered peasants.

Children watched from the shadows. Some eyes held fear. Others held something else.

Something Willem recognized.

— World Channel —

> [@IronWolf]:

"He faced down Bael emissaries today."

[@CrimsonArbitress]:

"And he still lives?"

[@AshenQueen]:

"This is not a man who will bend."

[@AzureMatron]:

"Then one day, he will have to break."

---

— Command Center — Sunset

Willem watched the last trucks return to the compound, their headlights stabbing through the dark. On the runway, a half-finished Oryx fuselage gleamed under floodlights.

He let himself close his eyes—just for a moment.

When he opened them, nothing had changed. The Devils were still coming. The reincarnators were still scheming.

But he was still here.

And tomorrow, the engines would roar.
