"No," I answered Mrs. Sinclair's unexpected question about my love life. "I'm focusing on my career right now."
She smiled, satisfied with my answer. "A wise choice. I did the same at your age."
I kept my expression neutral despite my surprise. Most women of her generation and status would push for marriage above all else.
"What about your past with Mr. Everett?" she asked bluntly. "The scandal was quite public."
My spine stiffened. "That's behind me now."
"As it should be," Mrs. Sinclair nodded approvingly. "You were clearly the victim in that situation."
Her words stunned me. Most people in high society had sided with Alistair and Ivy, painting me as the heartless woman who wouldn't step aside for her dying stepsister.
"Do you still love him?" she pressed.
"Mrs. Sinclair—" I started, uncomfortable with her directness.
"Forgive an old woman's curiosity," she said, not looking sorry at all.
I took a deep breath. "No, I don't. That chapter of my life is closed."
