Chapter 1 - Surviving the undead

The story begins in New York, when three friends—Ethan, Brian, and Zoe—go to their new college. The friends are very happy, but little did they know that this happiness wouldn't last long. They think, why not go on a trip, so they make a plan to go to California together.

Ethan: Come on, guys, we're free now—let's plan the trip.

Zoe: That's a great idea! What do you think, Brian?

Brian: Yeah, it sounds good, but we'll have to leave soon.

(Brian gets a little worried hearing about the trip, but Ethan notices his concern.)

Ethan: Alright, it's getting late. Let's meet tomorrow.

Everyone gets up and sits in Ethan's car.

Zoe: Wow, Ethan! A new car? You didn't tell us!

Ethan: Well, this is the treat! You'll get to check out the car later.

Brian: Nice car, Ethan. What's the occasion?

Ethan: Got it to celebrate getting into college, bro!

Ethan starts the car and drives them. After a little while, he stops at Zoe's house.

Zoe: Okay boys, see you tomorrow—we'll plan the trip then.

Ethan: Okay Zoe, take care.

Brian: Bye Zoe, take care.

Ethan starts the car again and says to Brian:

Ethan: Brian, man, why did you look so worried when we talked about the trip?

Brian: What? No, who said that?

Ethan: Come on, don't lie. Tell me what's going on. I'm your friend.

Brian: Okay man… you know I'm not rich like you or Zoe, so going on a trip is a bit hard for me financially.

Ethan: Bro, how could you even think that way? I'll cover your ticket and hotel. You just bring your pocket money.

When I'm feeling down, you're always there for me. So this time, you're coming with us—and don't tell Zoe about this, okay?

Brian: Thanks, brother. You're my best friend.

Ethan stops the car at Brian's house and drops him off.

Ethan: Take care, bro.

Brian: Okay bro, bye.

The next day, Ethan sends a message in the group:

Ethan: You both come to my house today at 5 PM. We'll do the planning there.

Zoe: Okay

Brian: Okay

They all start doing their work.

But

Meanwhile in California, a scientist becomes friends with a 13-year-old schoolboy. One day, they meet at a bakery.

Boy: Please, sir, can I have some bread?

Cashier: Okay kid, here you go.

The scientist notices an injury on the boy's leg.

When the boy leaves the bakery, the scientist gives him a chocolate and says:

Scientist: What's your name?

Boy: My name is Chris.

Scientist: Nice to meet you, Chris.

Boy: Thanks, but I'm getting late now.

Scientist: Okay kid, go ahead.

Scene shifts back to the three friends.

They all go to Ethan's house.

Zoe: So boys, what's the plan?

Brian: Wait, let Ethan come first.

The door opens and Ethan enters the room with a big map.

Brian: Whoa, what's this, Ethan? (smiles)

Zoe: (laughs) Oh my God, you brought the whole map!

Ethan: (laughs) This way we can really understand California well.

Brian: So what all places are we planning to visit?

Ethan: The beach, of course—and all the popular spots in California.

Zoe: You fools, which city are we going to? You want to tour all of California? (she laughs)

Brian: Yeah, Zoe's right, Ethan.

Ethan: Chill, first let's decide the first city.

Zoe: Los Angeles!

Brian: San Francisco!

Ethan: San Diego!

Each of them says a different city.

Ethan: Okay, let's finalize it, guys.

Zoe: Why are you so excited like we're leaving tomorrow?

Ethan: Well, college starts in August.

Brian: First let's finalize the city.

Ethan: Let's go to all three!

Zoe: What? Seriously? Are you crazy?

Ethan: Come on, this is our first trip ever—we have to make the most of it, right Brian?

Brian: Yeah, you're right… (but he looks a little unsure)

Zoe: Alright, fine.

Brian: Let's start with San Francisco, then Los Angeles, and finally San Diego.

Ethan: Sounds good!

Scene shifts to the scientist.

The scientist is on his way to the laboratory.

He enters.

Security Guard: Good morning, sir.

The scientist ignores him.

Scientist: Where's the boss?

Another Scientist: In his office, of course.

The scientist heads straight to the boss's office and enters without knocking.

Boss: So, Mr. Michael, you finally found time to show up?

Michael: Why did you text me that message?

Boss: Well, because you never come on time, and you don't know how to talk to people properly.

Michael: Wow, so that's why you're firing me?

Boss: And also because you don't finish your work on time.

Michael: Boss, if you want to fire me, just go ahead.

Boss: You're fired. I don't want to see you at Winds again.

Michael walks out of the office.

He goes to a bakery and buys a pastry because it's his birthday that day.

He enters the bakery.

Michael: One pastry, please.

Cashier: Happy birthday, sir! I hope you've had a good day.

Michael: Thanks, buddy.

Michael hands over the money.

Cashier: No sir, you're one of my regular customers, and it's your birthday. This one's on me—a gift from my side.

Michael smiles. His day had started off terribly, and he didn't have any friends.

Michael: Thanks, buddy.

Cashier: No problem, sir.

Michael goes to the park, sits down, and eats the pastry while tears begin to roll down his cheeks.

A month ago, his wife had divorced him, and now, on his birthday, he had to give up his favorite passion too.

He cries—but finds a little peace while looking at nature.

As Michael is eating, he suddenly sees that same boy again.

Boy: Please leave me alone!

Bullies: No way. What do you think you are, little kid?

Michael sees this happening and walks toward them.

Michael: What are you doing?!

The bullies hear his voice and immediately run away.

Episode Ends.
