"Just some medical work at the hospital," I replied, settling into the chair across from Evelyn's desk. "Nothing too complicated."
Evelyn studied my face carefully, her intuition telling her there was more to the story. "The receptionist mentioned something about saving six people's lives."
"A few police officers had some health issues. I helped them recover."
"Health issues?" She raised an eyebrow. "That sounds like quite an understatement."
I shrugged, not wanting to worry her with details about spiritual possession and sabotage attempts. "They're fine now. That's what matters."
Evelyn walked around her desk and sat on the edge, closer to me. "Ethan, you don't have to protect me from everything. I can handle hearing about your work."
"I know you can handle it. But some things aren't worth discussing."
She reached out and touched my hand gently. "Promise me you're being careful out there."
"I'm always careful."
"That's not what I asked."
