"That was intense," Evelyn said softly as we walked toward the hotel's valet station. "I can't believe the Governor dismissed your warning like that."
I took her hand as we waited for our car. "People believe what they want to believe. He'll remember my words soon enough."
"You really think he only has a week?"
"Less than that, actually. The murderous energy around him was stronger than I initially thought."
The valet brought our car around. I helped Evelyn into the passenger seat before walking around to the driver's side.
"I'm still processing everything that happened tonight," Evelyn said as I started the engine. "Seeing Zara again after all these years."
"She's changed quite a bit from your university days."
"Has she though? Or was she always like this and I just didn't want to see it?"
I pulled out of the hotel's circular driveway and onto the main road. The streets were quieter now, most of the evening traffic having dissipated.
