🌑 Episode 1: The Rootless Boy

The bamboo forests whispered in the wind, and the early morning mist curled around the tiny paths of Bamboo Leaf Village. It was a day of excitement—the annual Spirit Root Awakening Ceremony.

Children from all over the village gathered at the square. Some trembled nervously; others stood proudly, eager to reveal their talent. Today, they would be tested—ranked by the heavens. And if lucky, chosen by a sect.

In the crowd, a thin boy with wild black hair stood alone.

He was dressed in patched robes, his face tanned from working the fields. His hands were rough, his gaze steady. Though younger than most, there was something... sharp in his eyes.

Wang Wu.

"Wu, stay close," came a raspy voice. A man limped over with a cane carved from spiritwood—his father, Wang Shan, once an outer disciple of the Sky Ascend Sect.

"Father, will I have a spirit root?" Wang Wu asked.

Wang Shan's gaze turned cloudy. "...Maybe not."

Wang Wu said nothing. He only clenched his fists.

---

Atop the ceremony platform stood an elder in sky-blue robes. He waved his sleeve, and a glowing crystal pillar rose from the ground.

"Next, Wang Wu."

A snicker ran through the crowd.

"That's the farmer's boy, right?"

"His father was crippled by backlash years ago. Don't get your hopes up!"

Wang Wu stepped up. He placed his palm against the crystal. A long moment passed.

The crystal flickered...

...then dimmed to grey.

Dead silence.

"No spiritual root detected," the elder said. "Rootless."

Laughter erupted.

"Trash!"

"Even the heavens abandoned him!"

Wang Wu stood still. His hand dropped. He looked at the elder, then at the sky.

"Then I'll cultivate without Heaven."

---

That night, while others celebrated or cried, Wang Wu sat atop his broken rooftop, staring at the stars. His heart was heavy—but not broken.

His father sat beside him, silent.

"Is it true?" Wang Wu asked. "You used to be a cultivator?"

Wang Shan sighed. "A failed one. The sect cast me out when my dantian shattered. The only thing I brought back... was this."

From under his robes, he produced a black scroll, bound by metal rings and old seals. The cover read:

> Heaven-Defying Scripture of the Void Pulse

Wang Wu's eyes widened.

His father handed it to him with trembling fingers.

"I found it in a battlefield long ago. Never used it. Too dangerous. Too painful. It says only those with nothing... can survive it."

Wang Wu opened the scroll slowly. Strange, cold energy crawled up his arms.

> "If Heaven denies you... then seize the Void."

Wang Wu smiled.

"I accept."
