Chapter 4 - Chapter four

As they walked into the Adventurer's Guild, Moonlit and Aliana were met with a mixture of stunned faces and curious glances. The news of their victory over Xylara, the Queen of the Shadow Stalkers, spread like wildfire, and soon, a crowd gathered around them.

"Who are you people?" one adventurer asked, eyeing them with suspicion. "You're not exactly... seasoned adventurers, are you?"

Moonlit chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. "Well, we're just a couple of lucky folks who managed to defeat a monster by accident."

Aliana rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Don't believe him. He's actually a skilled fighter."

A burly warrior approached them, a wide grin on his face. "Hey, congratulations on completing the mission! I'm Thrain, by the way. I've been trying to take down Xylara for months."

Moonlit shook Thrain's hand. "Thanks, man. We just got lucky. By the way, do you know if there's a good hotel around here? I'm tired of sleeping on the streets."

Thrain nodded. "Yeah, there's a great one just down the street. The Golden Griffin. It's not too expensive, and the beds are comfortable."

Aliana smiled. "I'll let you enjoy your newfound wealth, Kai Renn. I'll see you tomorrow."

Moonlit watched as Aliana disappeared into the crowd, wondering how she managed to blend in so seamlessly. He shrugged, deciding to enjoy his newfound wealth. He spent some gold coins on a room at the Golden Griffin and collapsed onto the bed, feeling like he was in heaven.

The next morning, Moonlit woke up feeling refreshed and ready for the day. He made his way back to the Adventurer's Guild, looking for Aliana. As he arrived, he spotted her standing by the mission board, her eyes scanning the postings.

"Hey," Moonlit said, approaching her. "Ready to make some plans?"

Aliana turned to him, a hint of a smile on her face. "Let's get started, Kai Renn. We have a lot to discuss."

Aliana smiled, leading Moonlit to a secluded area of the city. "Today, I'll teach you about demon culture and the different clans."

Moonlit's eyes widened as Aliana began to explain the intricacies of demon society. "So, there's the Kraelion clan, known for their mastery of shadow magic. Then there's the Vorgath clan, who specialize in fire magic."

Moonlit nodded, trying to remember everything. "Got it. Kraelion for shadows, Vorgath for fire. What about the others?"

Aliana chuckled. "There are many more. But first, let's focus on demon etiquette. When greeting a demon lord, you need to show respect."

Moonlit mimicked Aliana's bow, but ended up tripping over his own feet. Aliana burst out laughing. "Maybe we need to work on your coordination, Kai Renn."

The rest of the day was spent learning various skills, from demon language to combat techniques. Moonlit struggled with the language, but Aliana was patient. "It's not that hard, Kai Renn. Just remember, 'Zhilak' means 'hello'."

Moonlit repeated the word, mangling the pronunciation. Aliana giggled. "Close enough. I think they'll understand."

As the sun began to set, Aliana nodded. "You're doing well, Kai Renn. But don't think you're ready for demon royalty just yet."

Moonlit grinned. "Hey, I'll get there. I'm a quick learner."

Aliana smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I'm looking forward to seeing you try."

The next day, Aliana took Moonlit to meet some influential demons in the kingdom. Moonlit's eyes widened as they walked into a grand hall filled with powerful demons.

"Who's that?" Moonlit whispered, pointing to a tall, imposing figure.

Aliana followed his gaze. "That's Lord Xandros, leader of the Vorgath clan. He's not someone to mess with."

Moonlit nodded, trying to look confident. "Got it. Don't mess with Lord Xandros."

Aliana chuckled. "Exactly. Let's go say hello."

As they approached Lord Xandros, Moonlit stumbled over his own words. Aliana intervened, saving him from embarrassment. "Lord Xandros, this is Kai Renn, a... friend of mine."

Lord Xandros raised an eyebrow. "A friend, you say? Interesting. I'll be keeping an eye on you, Kai Renn."

Moonlit smiled, trying to hide his nervousness. "Thanks, Lord Xandros. I'll try not to disappoint."

Aliana leaned in, whispering, "You're doing great, Kai Renn. Just don't trip over your own feet this time."

Moonlit shot her a look, but couldn't help smiling. He was learning to navigate the complex world of demon politics, and with Aliana's help, he might just survive.

Moonlit followed Aliana through the big hall, trying to learn about demon customs. He wanted to fit in and not look silly.

Aliana tested his knowledge: "Kai Renn, which demon group controls ice magic?"

Moonlit thought for a moment before answering, "Is it the Kyrexi group?"

Aliana smiled. "That's right! You're learning fast."

They walked up to a group of demons drinking dark red liquid from fancy glasses. Aliana whispered, "This is Lord Vexar. He's offering 'Bloodwine'. It's a special drink."

Lord Vexar handed Moonlit a glass. "Welcome, Kai Renn. Drink with us!"

Moonlit took a sip – it tasted bad! He coughed quietly.

Aliana giggled. "Say 'Zhra'kash' before drinking next time."

Moonlit smiled sheepishly. "Okay, got it."

Lord Vexar laughed. "You're funny, Kai Renn. Where are you from – which city?"

Aliana jumped in quickly, "He's from a... remote village, my lord. Very far from here."

Lord Vexar nodded. "I see. Well, Kai Renn, let's test your skills. Can you handle a sword, ride a horse, or show us any other talent?"

Moonlit's heart raced – what could he possibly show them?!

Aliana whispered, "Just be yourself, Kai Renn."

Moonlit thought for a moment before saying, "I can handle a sword, my lord."

Lord Vexar raised an eyebrow. "Interesting. Our swords are heavier than usual weapons. Let's see your strength."

A demon guard handed Moonlit a heavy sword. Moonlit grasped it firmly and swung it a few times – he was surprisingly comfortable with its weight.

Lord Vexar nodded impressed. "Not bad, Kai Renn. Your technique is... unusual, but effective."

Aliana smiled proudly beside him.

Next, Lord Vexar said, "Now, let's see you ride a horse... or rather, a 'Nightsteed' – a demon breed."

Moonlit's eyes widened as a massive black horse with glowing red eyes was led out.

He swallowed hard but climbed onto the Nightsteed's back. To his surprise, the horse seemed to sense his calm nature and remained still.

Lord Vexar applauded. "Impressive, Kai Renn! You have a gentle touch for a... village boy."

Aliana giggled softly beside him, clearly amused by Lord Vexar's innocent comment – she knew Moonlit's true secret.

Moonlit breathed internally – he had passed these tests without revealing his true identity... so far

Lord Vexar leaned forward, intrigued by Moonlit's unexpected skills.

"Kai Renn, your abilities suggest military training or... adventure experience. Tell me, what did you do in this remote village of yours?"

Moonlit thought quickly, recalling Aliana's warning to keep his story simple.

"I helped my father with his... trade caravan, my lord. We traveled to nearby towns, guarding goods and learning self-defense."

Lord Vexar nodded thoughtfully. "A caravan guard – that explains your sword arm and calm nature around horses. But..."

He paused, eyeing Moonlit intensely.

"You seem more resourceful than average caravan guards I've met. Did you have any notable... encounters during your travels?"

Moonlit's heart skipped a beat – Lord Vexar was probing closer to his true adventures!

Aliana intervened smoothly, "My lord, perhaps Kai Renn's stories can wait for another time? He's still recovering from our recent... expedition."

Lord Vexar chuckled. "Indeed, Aliana. I forget myself. Kai Renn, you've impressed me – consider this an invitation to dinner tomorrow night at my palace."

Moonlit bowed, relieved at the distraction.

As soon as they stepped out of Lord Vexar's hall, Aliana grabbed Moonlit's arm and pulled him into a quiet corner.

"What were you thinking in there?!" Aliana whispered urgently.

Moonlit looked confused. "What did I do wrong?"

"You almost revealed too much! Lord Vexar is smarter than he seems – he suspects you're not from around here."

Moonlit's eyes widened. "How did I give myself away?"

"Your stories were too vague, and your skills... are not exactly 'caravan guard' material," Aliana said with a hint of amusement.

Moonlit rubbed his neck nervously. "What do we do? Should I decline the dinner invitation?"

Aliana thought for a moment before responding, "No, we'll use this dinner to our advantage. We'll make Lord Vexar think he's figured out your 'secret'... but not the real one."

Moonlit raised an eyebrow. "What secret will we make him think he's discovered?"

Aliana smiled slyly. "Leave that to me. Just follow my lead tomorrow night."

The next evening, Moonlit and Aliana arrived at Lord Vexar's palace, dressed in their finest attire. Moonlit wore a sleek black suit with silver trim, while Aliana donned a stunning red gown that highlighted her demon heritage. As they entered the dining hall, Lord Vexar greeted them warmly. "Ah, Kai Renn, I'm glad you could make it. I've been curious about your... background." Aliana subtly nudged Moonlit, and he smiled, playing along. "Yes, my lord. I suppose my past is a bit more... complicated than I let on." Lord Vexar's eyes lit up with intrigue. "Complicated, you say? I think I can guess. You're a former member of the Shadowhand Clan, aren't you?" Moonlit's eyes widened slightly, and Aliana stepped in, "Ah, Lord Vexar, you're as perceptive as ever. Yes, Kai Renn has ties to the Shadowhand." Moonlit's heart raced as he realized Aliana was feeding Lord Vexar a carefully crafted story.

Lord Vexar nodded, seemingly satisfied with the explanation. "I knew it. The Shadowhand's influence extends far beyond the city walls. I've had... dealings with them in the past." He leaned forward, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "Tell me, Kai Renn, what drove you to leave the Shadowhand? Was it a disagreement with their leadership, or perhaps a... personal matter?" Moonlit hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. Aliana's subtle nod encouraged him to play along. "Let's just say I had a difference in opinion regarding the clan's direction, my lord. I prefer to work independently now." Lord Vexar chuckled. "I see. A lone wolf, eh? I admire that. Perhaps we can discuss... potential opportunities for someone with your skills." As the dinner conversation continued, Moonlit found himself walking a delicate balance between revealing enough to satisfy Lord Vexar's curiosity and keeping his true identity hidden.

As the dinner conversation continued, Lord Vexar leaned in, his eyes sparkling with intrigue. "So, Kai Renn, tell me, what's the most... creative way you've ever gotten out of a tight spot?" Moonlit thought for a moment, then grinned mischievously. "Well, my lord, I once convinced a group of bandits that I was a cursed treasure hunter, and they let me go in exchange for a ritual dance to appease the spirits." Lord Vexar raised an eyebrow. "A ritual dance, you say? I'd love to see that." Moonlit hesitated, then stood up, striking a dramatic pose. He began to dance, waving his arms wildly and making "whooshing" noises with his mouth. Aliana giggled, trying to stifle her laughter, while Lord Vexar looked on, amused. "I think the spirits are appeased, Kai Renn," Lord Vexar chuckled. Moonlit bowed, grinning. "Thank you, my lord. I think I've found a new career path – demon ritual dancer." Aliana playfully rolled her eyes. "I think you'll stick to being a 'caravan guard', Kai Renn."

As the evening wore on, Lord Vexar's questions turned more serious. "Kai Renn, I've heard rumors of a powerful artifact hidden within the Shadowlands. Have you heard anything about it?" Moonlit's eyes widened slightly, and Aliana quickly intervened. "My lord, I think Kai Renn's expertise lies more in... creative escape methods than artifact hunting." Lord Vexar chuckled. "Indeed, indeed. But if you do happen to stumble upon it, I'd be interested in... discussing its acquisition." Moonlit nodded, trying to play it cool. "Of course, my lord. I'll keep that in mind... right after I finish perfecting my ritual dance moves." Aliana kicked him under the table, and Lord Vexar laughed. "I think we can expect great things from you, Kai Renn."

As the dinner concluded, Moonlit let out a sigh of relief. "Well, that was fun. I think I managed not to blow my cover... this time." Aliana smiled. "You're a natural, Kai Renn. But next time, maybe leave the ritual dancing for the actual rituals." Moonlit grinned. "Hey, it's a skill. You never know when you'll need to distract a group of bandits with some awkward dance moves."
