Chapter 13
“Since that night, she has seen the error of her ways,” Chloe began, trying to steady her quivering voice. “And thanks to Your Grace, there is talk of marriage between her and Count Cormier. I am most appreciative.”
“Had I known my silence would be repaid with three months of silence from you, I would never have done you that favor,” Damien replied coldly.
Chloe felt her palms grow damp. She discreetly wiped them on her handkerchief, but this caused yet another problem. The needle she had accidentally dropped was now resting on his chest. As she attempted to retrieve it without touching his bare skin, he suddenly grabbed her hand.
“Please release my hand, Your Grace.”
“Answer me.”
Chloe bit her lip hard, feeling her pulse racing beneath his firm grasp. “I wrote you many letters,” she admitted, struggling to maintain a steady voice.
“I never received a single one.”
“Because I could not bring myself to send them.”
“Your pathetic attempts to lie disappoint me.”
