Chapter 2 - The stranger's proposal

Lyra's hand remained on the dagger's hilt as she studied the stranger. The fading light cast long shadows across their face, making it difficult to discern their features. Yet, those piercing green eyes seemed to bore into her very soul."What do you know about Eldrida?" Lyra asked, her voice firm but cautious. The stranger took another step closer, their movements fluid and deliberate. "I know it's real. I know it's hidden deep within the mountains, guarded by ancient magic and treacherous terrain. And I know you're the only one who can help me find it."Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Why me?"The stranger's gaze locked onto hers. "You have a gift, Lyra. A gift that allows you to hear the whispers of the past. I've been searching for someone with your abilities for a long time."Lyra's grip on the dagger tightened. "What makes you think I can help you?"The stranger smiled, a small, enigmatic smile. "I've been watching you, Lyra. I know you're drawn to the whispers. I know you're searching for something more. And I think Eldrida holds the key to what you're looking for."Lyra hesitated, torn between her curiosity and her wariness. The stranger's words struck a chord within her, resonating with her own desires and doubts. She did want to find Eldrida, to uncover its secrets and understand the whispers."What do you propose?" Lyra asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The stranger's smile grew wider. "I propose we work together. I'll provide the knowledge and the means to navigate the mountains. You'll use your gift to guide us to Eldrida. Together, we can uncover its secrets and claim its power."Lyra's mind racing with the possibilities, she asked, "What's in it for you?"The stranger's eyes gleamed in the dim light. "Let's just say I have my own reasons for wanting to find Eldrida. Reasons that go beyond mere curiosity."Lyra studied the stranger, trying to read between the lines. She sensed there was more to their story, but she couldn't quite grasp it. Yet, the prospect of finding Eldrida with someone who seemed to know what they were doing was tantalizing."I'm not sure," Lyra said, stalling for time. The stranger nodded, as if expecting her hesitation. "Think about it, Lyra. Meet me at the old windmill on the outskirts of town at midnight. If you're interested, we'll discuss the details."With that, the stranger turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving Lyra with more questions than answers.
