Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: White Night

The Bible tells that after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they had two sons: Cain and Abel.

Cain was a farmer who grew vegetables, while Abel was a shepherd who raised livestock.

One day, the brothers offered sacrifices to God. Cain presented some fresh vegetables, but Abel offered a tender lamb. God favored Abel's sacrifice, which made Cain jealous. In his envy, Cain killed his brother Abel with a stone.

Nothing escaped God's sight. He called Cain and asked, "Where is your brother Abel?"

Cain lied, "I don't know."

Angered, God cursed Cain and his descendants to be exiled, forever barred from walking in the light.

Some theologians believe that from then on, Cain was cast out of Eden and became a monster who survived by drinking human blood. His descendants lived in haunted castles, stirring terrifying vampire legends across Europe whenever they appeared.

Wang Dali exclaimed, "Wow, Yangzi, you even read the Bible?"

I shook my head. "I haven't read the Bible. I saw this legend in another book."

Huang Xiaotao sneered, "Interesting. A vampire coming from a place that worships God. That's ironic."

...

The older woman said, "Miss Officer, you shouldn't say that. Where there is light, there is darkness. God and the devil are two sides of the same coin. Besides, that child has been reformed under the director's care."

"That kid hasn't changed at all. Just a few days ago, he drained all the blood from a woman..." Wang Dali blurted out.

Huang Xiaotao shot him a sharp glance. The older woman gasped, "Is that true?"

Huang Xiaotao hesitated, "The case is still under investigation. We haven't confirmed the culprit yet."

The older woman crossed herself and whispered, "May the Lord forgive his sins."

She led us to an office and knocked on the door. A man's voice called, "Come in!"

The older woman pushed the door open and said, "Director, these are police detectives investigating something."

Inside, behind a cluttered desk sat a man in his fifties or sixties, with graying temples and glasses, typing away. Several books, mostly Bibles, were stacked on the desk.

The director stood up and greeted us, "Sorry for the mess. Please have a seat. Nurse Ren, could you bring some tea?"

Wang Dali muttered, "Nurse Ren?"

I nudged him to keep quiet. "Nurse Ren is a title for nuns. Not like the 'nurse' in that old TV show."

Huang Xiaotao briefly explained our purpose. The director nodded. "Yes, I remember the boy you mentioned. His name is White Night. Actually, I gave him that name—'White' for his pale skin, 'Night' because he prefers to live in darkness."

"White Night's background is quite tragic. His mother was a prostitute, but he was too young to remember her face or name. Due to her profession, she abandoned him. For a long time, White Night was withdrawn and rarely socialized."

"Prostitute?" Huang Xiaotao was a little surprised.

So that's why White Night targeted prostitutes.

"Director, do you know where White Night went afterward?" I asked.

He shook his head. "No. He ran away and vanished without a trace. We were very worried and sent people to look for him."

I asked, "What happens to orphans after they leave here?"

"We teach them basic knowledge, roughly equivalent to nine years of compulsory education. Once they become adults, they learn a skill to support themselves. Some choose to stay and serve the Church."

I glanced at the modest office and praised, "Starting an orphanage like this is a great service to society!"

The director smiled, "You flatter me. Honestly, I was once an orphan myself. I survived by the grace of the Lord and vowed to repay Him with my life. The first few years were tough, but things improved thanks to government funding, community support, and occasional help from former orphans."

After thanking him, we prepared to leave without drinking the tea. Suddenly, I remembered something and asked, "By the way, have you seen White Night recently?"

I activated my 'Ghost Eye' and observed the director's reaction. He flinched slightly but answered calmly, "No."

"Alright, thank you," I nodded.

Outside, Huang Xiaotao asked, "How did you know the orphanage might have clues?"

"Not really a guess—more like a gamble," I said.

"A gamble?" Huang Xiaotao looked puzzled.

"White Night looks strange and has a vampire habit. Who wouldn't be scared if they had a kid like that? So I figured there were two possibilities: either his parents took him to hospitals for treatment, or they just abandoned him," I explained slowly.

"So you thought if hospitals had no leads, then the orphanage must?" Huang Xiaotao brightened.

"Exactly!"

As we left, I kept thinking about the director's reaction. People show subtle signs when lying—called microexpressions. Things like eyebrow twitches, unfocused eyes, tightened lips.

When I asked about White Night, the director had some abnormal behaviors. I wasn't sure if he was lying or just startled by my sudden eye change, because I had never used this 'Ghost Eye' trick before.

Huang Xiaotao saw me staring at the orphanage and asked, "Song Yang, what's wrong?"

"Let's do a little test," I said.

I activated 'Ghost Eye' again. Both of them jumped. Wang Dali asked, "Yangzi, why are your eyes changing color again? Are you casting some kind of spell?"

"Dali, did you have a wet dream this week?" I blurted out.

Wang Dali's eyes widened in shock, "Why do you ask that?"

"Did you or didn't you?" I pressed.

"No! I wouldn't do something like that."

I deactivated 'Ghost Eye'. "You're lying."

Wang Dali blushed deeply. Masturbating isn't a big deal, but admitting it in front of Huang Xiaotao was embarrassing. He sulked, "Song Yang, why'd you have to expose me like that?"

"Sorry, I'll buy you ice cream later."

I explained I was testing microexpressions for lying. Wang Dali's reaction was exaggerated, while the director stayed calm but both showed similar subtle signs—flared nostrils, constricted pupils, slightly reddened ears. These fleeting reactions escaped no detection from my 'Ghost Eye'.

After this test, I was sure the director lied. He definitely saw White Night recently!

Huang Xiaotao was shocked, "I told you, the more pious someone seems, the less trustworthy they are! Song Yang, should we rush back and confront him?"

"I don't think it's wise. Since he's hiding something, he probably won't talk. And we don't have a search warrant. I suggest we quietly monitor him for now."

"Alright, let's do that!" Huang Xiaotao agreed.

Suddenly, she asked, "By the way, what's a 'wet dream'?"

"Well..." I hesitated, surprised she didn't know, but it's understandable since she never had a boyfriend.

"It's a game! A new mobile game!" Wang Dali jumped in quickly, "All guys love it!"
