Chapter 18 - Smoke on the Market Wind

The sun rose over Braisenhold's Ironroot District, casting golden light over a city already waking with clamor and spice. Smoke swirled from chimney-tops as vendors prepared for the weekly Grand Market—a battlefield of scents, sounds, and sales.

Kai adjusted his Junior Chef sash, the red-gold thread catching light as he stepped into the tide of bodies. But today, he wasn't here to browse. He was here to hunt.

[Main Quest: Rise Through the Flame]

Sub-Objective: Gather Tier-2 Ingredients

Reward: +100 XP, +1 New Skill Slot, +1 Rare Ingredient

After his recent victories and trials, the System had raised the bar. If he wanted to keep climbing the culinary ladder, he needed ingredients beyond common fare. Tier-2s—rare, temperamental, and often dangerous—were the next step.

Kai's eyes scanned the market stalls.

[Ingredient Recognition I – Passive]

Activating…

Flashes of color and text flickered across his vision:

Frostleaf Chive – Tier 1 – Herb, cooling property, good for tempering spicy dishes.

Ashroot Bulb – Tier 2 – Rare. Smoky, earthy base. Strong affinity with fire-based cooking.

Fireplume Mushroom – Tier 1 – Slightly volatile, enhances umami.

There it was.

Ashroot Bulb.

Kai approached the elderly vendor behind the stall. The man looked up with a grin.

"Ah, you've got the look of a chef who knows the bite of real heat. Interested in the Bulb?"

Kai nodded. "How much?"

"Six coins." The vendor tapped the price tag with a smirk. "Hard to harvest, harder to cook. If you mess it up, it'll overpower the whole plate."

Kai winced. He had five coins left from his last job. Not enough.

Just as he was about to haggle, a voice called out behind him.

"Well, well. If it isn't the Pan Warden himself."

Kai turned.

A young woman in sharp white robes and a chef's sigil stitched in crimson approached. Her eyes glittered like sharpened glass. A rival.

"Name's Ryn," she said coolly. "Sous-Chef of the Copper Thistle. If you want that Ashroot, we duel for it."

[Side Quest Triggered: Rival's Ember]

Culinary Duel: Ryn Vael – Sous-Chef Rank

(Combat Style: Fermentation & Char)

Stakes: Winner gets the Ashroot Bulb

Victory Reward: +30 XP, +1 Ingredient (Tier-2), +5 Reputation

Failure Penalty: -3 Reputation

Kai's pulse quickened. He accepted.

"Three ingredients. No flame tools. Only natural fire."

They set up in the square. An enchanted iron pan, a single heatstone, and a crowd forming fast.

Kai's mind worked fast—he grabbed:

Ash-Pork Strip (Tier 1)

Wild Vinegar Gel (Tier 1)

Frostleaf Chive (Tier 1)

Ryn's style focused on fermentation and char, but Kai trusted his instincts. He seared the Ash-Pork low and slow, letting the fat sizzle out while spooning vinegar glaze across its ridges. He used the Frostleaf to cool the edges, preserving its integrity.

Then, with a flick of his wrist:

[Flame Artistry I – Active]Mana: 15 / 15 → 0 / 15

A whip of fire spiraled from his palm into the pan—just once—creating a perfect crust before he shut it down.

The crowd gasped.

Ryn's dish was bold—pickled plum paste with scorched lamb. Strong, but overly sour.

The judge—an old spice merchant—tasted both.

He smiled at Kai. "This one… it tells a story."

[Victory – Kai Elgren]

+5 Reputation

Kai bowed, sweat still on his brow.

The System chimed again:

As the market returned to its chaos, Kai walked away, bulb in hand.

His journey had just stepped into its next phase.

The Early Grind had begun.
