The following morning, Luna woke up before her husband, Matteo. She already had a plan, but she needed to execute it carefully. She suspected the mafia was involved, and if she was right, she needed proof.
She slipped out of bed quietly, grabbed a rope, and went downstairs. The house was quiet, with only faint movements and sounds coming from the guard outside. She walked into the kitchen, acting as if she was preparing coffee, but her mind was elsewhere. The truth wasn't in the kitchen—it was somewhere else. She needed proof to confirm just how deep Matteo was in this world.
Her thoughts drifted to Lorenzo, the man her husband had spoken to last night. She knew he was involved, and she also knew he was Matteo's right-hand man because she had seen it in the documents. If only she had overheard their conversation or found another file—anything that could expose the truth. But Matteo wouldn't keep important files in the house. He had to have them somewhere else, locked away for business purposes. He wouldn't risk the maids or servants seeing them.
But one place stood out—his office.
She had never been inside before. It was his private space, where he handled business, but she didn't know what kind. She had asked him about it once after their marriage, but he had only smiled and brushed it off, saying it was just business. So, she hadn't thought much about it—until now.
As she stood in the kitchen, she finished making the coffee, poured it into a cup, and took it upstairs. Just as she reached the bedroom, Matteo was waking up. She smiled and handed him the coffee.
"Good morning, my love," Matteo said in his deep morning voice, taking the cup from her hands.
"Good morning," she replied with a smile.
He took a small sip and grinned. "You always know exactly what I need. I knew I was lucky when I married you. Thank you for being such a caring wife."
Matteo didn't flinch—he just kept smiling at her.
Luna went back to the kitchen and sat down with her own cup of coffee. She knew one thing for sure—she had to get into that office.
I need to get ahead of myself. Do I really have to go to the office? Because I'm not sure I'll find the key that easily. Or should I tell him I'm taking the car to go shopping for makeup? But even if I say that, will he tell the guards and security to follow me?
If he leaves today, I'll follow him. Maybe I can sneak out of the house and take a taxi. I just have to be careful so I don't get caught. Because if I do, it'll look suspicious. I have to do this my way. At any cost.
I have to know what's going on in my family. If I ever have children, I don't want them to face the same trauma I went through growing up. I need to do this for the better. To find out what he's hiding from me. To know everything. To understand what he's trying to do. To figure out his motive. I need to know everything, Luna whispered to herself.
As she walked toward Matteo, she saw that he was already dressed in a suit.
"Baby, I'm going out today. You know I have business to take care of," Matteo said, placing a hand on her waist and giving her a small kiss on the forehead. "And I'll be meeting my friend—you remember Lorenzo, the one we saw yesterday?"
"I remember," Luna said, nodding.
"I'll be out for a little while, but don't worry—I'll be back by noon. Do you understand, baby?" Matteo asked, holding her close.
"Yes, I understand," she said, looking up at him.
Matteo headed downstairs but suddenly called back to her.
"Luna, aren't you going to prepare a meal for me?"
"I'm a little busy right now," she said quickly. "I need to get more makeup since I'm running low, and I'm trying to find something to use for now."
"Don't worry about that," Matteo said. "I told you—you can buy as much as you want. It doesn't matter how much it costs. Here, take my card. Spend whatever you need." He handed her his card without hesitation.
"Thanks, baby," Luna said, smiling sweetly. "Don't worry, I'll tell the maid to prepare something for you." She hugged him, keeping up the act.
Luna walked away and told the maid to prepare something for her husband. She was going to eat. The maid did as she said, while Luna herself went to her room. She ordered a taxi because she wasn't going to take a car. If she took a car and left the house, she would have to take security with her. And she couldn't have security with her because they would report back to Matteo that she was following him.
So she called a taxi, and it waited outside, a bit far from their mansion. In her room, she put on a pair of glasses she had bought but never worn. She fixed her hair, put on a wig, and grabbed a round sun hat she planned to wear with it. She looked in the mirror and knew it was a perfect disguise. Even if he saw her, he wouldn't recognize her. She also needed to wear a dress he hadn't seen before.
She stepped out of the mansion and placed the hat, glasses, and wig in the taxi. The dress she planned to wear—she wasn't going to put it on yet. She would only wear it right after Matteo left the house when she told him goodbye. That was her plan.
She told the taxi driver to wait and rushed back into the mansion. No one noticed. None of the security guards even realized she had stepped out.
As Matteo was about to leave, he called out, "Luna! Luna!"
By the time he called her, she was already in her room. She rushed downstairs.
"What is it?" she asked with a smile.
"Baby, I'm about to leave. I told you I'll be back by noon, so don't worry. I'm going with my friend, and we're going to discuss business. So don't worry," Matteo said as he walked closer to her and grabbed her hand.
"I know you might feel lonely, but if you get bored, you can take my card and shop. Buy anything you want—clothes, makeup, whatever you need. Even if you want to buy a car, because you're boss, you can buy it. There's enough money on the card for anything you want. Just make sure you don't get bored. Do you understand?"
"You can take any car you want, but make sure there's a security guard with you. Do you understand?" Matteo said as he held her hand.
"Yes, I understand, baby," Luna replied.
