Chapter 2 - nothing boy

Chapter 2

Lost in thought, he wandered the school hallways, the faint echoes of laughter and chatter fading into a muted hum as he replayed yesterday's confrontation in his mind. Ria's eyes, wide with fear and misunderstanding, lingered in his thoughts.

"Leo, I'm really sorry! I was so scared. I didn't mean to say those things! I made a big mistake!" Her words had sliced through him, but instead of relief, all he felt was an icy detachment.

"It's okay, Ria. For me, it's nothing," he had muttered, although inside, a part of him was shaken. The teacher later called him to the front of the classroom, explaining the situation with a calm authority. "Leo, it's alright. Ria has apologized. Don't dwell on it." But he did dwell. He couldn't shake the feeling that apologies were merely hollow sounds, drifting through the air like autumn leaves caught in a gust of wind, beautiful but ultimately empty.

As the school day droned on, Leo's thoughts drifted to Mia, a flicker of a past that no longer held warmth. By now, they were barely friends, the childhood bond severed when she chose another—a handsome boy with charming words who left him in silence. Every school day, their paths crossed, but only in the fleeting glances that filled him with a bittersweet ache. She had looked at him as if he were invisible, while he replayed the memories of laughter they shared, vivid and haunting.

"Hello, Leo!" Mia's bright voice cut through his thoughts one day as he walked home. But today, her greeting felt like a rough scratch against his heart.

"Hey," he replied, his voice distant, and turned away. He felt the weight of unspoken affections and memories that flared up like embers. In their shared laughter, he recalled his heartbreak—how she had dismissed him, believing the allure of charm over a steadfast friendship.

As days turned into weeks, the turmoil of their ruptured friendship seeped into his thoughts. Leo often saw Mia with the boy she had chosen; their laughter was a cruel reminder. But then, as rumors dripped through the school like poison, so did the truth. Mia's boyfriend was cheating on her, an ultimate betrayal that Leo had predicted. When he approached Mia with the reality, he was met with anger.

"You're just jealous, Leo! Get lost!" she had spat, her face a mask of disbelief. He had swallowed his pain and retreated, as he always did, into the protective cloak of silence.

But time, as it often does, unraveled lies. One fateful afternoon, Mia found out the truth; her heart shattered like glass. She came to Leo, her eyes glassy with regret. "I didn't believe you, Leo! I was so stupid!" Shards of guilt pierced through her words.

He felt a mix of emotions bubbling to the surface—compassion for her suffering, anger for her past rejection, and a persistent ache that suggested a road not taken. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to comfort her, so he merely nodded, his heart heavy with the weight of their history. With each encounter, they danced closer to a fragile reconciliation, the space between them filled with the echoes of their shared silence.

Weeks passed, and through small conversations, their friendship began to mend, albeit slowly. They laughed, shared stories, and with each interaction, Leo felt himself thawing. He started to realize that beneath the surface of their past, the foundation of their friendship was still intact, waiting for the right moment to bloom again.

On a crisp autumn day, while walking home together, Mia turned to him with a tentative smile. "I missed you, Leo. I'm sorry for how I treated you. But Leo doesn't care because the damage was already done; he no longer believes her. The words slipped out before he could stop them. "It's fine. Just don't make promises you can't keep."

Mia's smile faltered. "I was wrong... I thought—"

"You thought I would wait forever? I won't, Mia. You've made your choices."

The conversation remained heavy between them, weighted down by the unsaid words and lingering resentments. With each passing day, Leo felt the warmth of their rekindled friendship mixed with the chill of betrayal. Although Mia was sorry and longing for forgiveness, Leo's heart was a fortress, the gates forever locked
