Chapter 59 - A Crown Bargained in Blood

"Nothing at all? Are you sure?"

I frowned, my hand beginning to slide away from his cheek, but Jasper caught it and gently held it in place.

"You think I would lie to you?" He answered evenly, leaning closer so I could see the full weight of emotion in his eyes.

His golden hair slipped from his shoulder, brushing softly against my cheek.

He spoke as though the one who had spun a glittering trap for me just a week ago wasn't him.

I curled my lips into a smirk, the arc of mockery drawn plainly across my face, a silent scream into his face: I don't believe you.

Jasper's lips pressed into a tight line, like he was holding himself back from shattering at my coldness. His breath dissolved between us, heavy with unspoken guilt.

"I know what I did… hurt you."

He bent down further, yet still didn't dare to touch my lips, though the craving to do so was written across every tense line of his body.
