Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: After the Spotlight

The morning after the gala dawned cold and gray, the sky overcast as if the universe itself mirrored the heaviness Archie felt in his chest.

Archie woke slowly in his dorm room, sunlight muted through the blinds. The echoes of last night's confrontation—the sharp words, the stolen glances, William's vulnerable admission—still pulsed vividly in his mind. He rubbed his eyes, trying to shake the lingering weight.

Anne was already awake, scrolling through her phone on the other side of the room. She looked up as Archie sat up, her face soft but tired.

"How are you holding up?" she asked.

Archie shrugged. "Like I'm on the edge of something. Like I can't quite catch my breath."

Anne nodded knowingly. "Yeah. This isn't just about William or Amanda. It's about everything they represent—the past you're trying to find and the future you want."

Archie sighed. "I want to believe in us, in William and me, but the mess of family and memories and promises... it's overwhelming."

Anne reached out, squeezing his hand. "We'll take it one step at a time."

Meanwhile, at the Connor family estate, Amanda Wynn sat in the grand but cold drawing room, the morning light filtering through heavy drapes. The champagne hangover from last night was still clinging to her temples, but the real pain was sharper—more personal.

She stared out the window, watching the garden she had once imagined could be a place of happiness.

Her engagement to William was supposed to be a merger of two powerful families, a perfect alliance. But last night had changed everything.

She thought of William's haunted eyes, the tenderness he had shown Archie, and the way he had looked at Archie like he was someone he couldn't forget.

A bitter knot formed in Amanda's stomach.

Was she just a placeholder? A pawn in a game she never agreed to play?

The engagement ring on her finger suddenly felt like a shackle.

Her phone buzzed—a message from her mother, reminding her of the family's expectations, the public image to maintain, and the careful steps ahead.

Amanda's fingers trembled as she texted back a simple reply:

I'm not sure I can do this anymore.

Back on campus, William sat alone in the university library, the quiet a stark contrast to the gala's chaos.

He opened his journal—the one he had found just last week—and traced the faded photo of Archie with his finger.

Memories blurred, fragments of feelings, whispers of laughter.

He was caught between two worlds—the one he had been born into, and the one he longed to reclaim.

His phone vibrated. A message from Archie: When can we talk?

William took a deep breath and typed back, Now.

The tangled threads of past and present, love and duty, memory and truth were pulling them all closer to a decision that could change everything.

And none of them could predict where the next step would lead.
