Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

BRITNEY'S POV

I stood at the entrance gate, my heart beating fast in my chest. My gaze locked onto the sign above, the logo of the silver-black pack. The metallic letters gleaned in the sunlight

As my mind clouded with a sense of unease. I glanced back, my anxiety taking the better of me.

The line was longer than I expected, I guess I wasn't the only one training. The realization only added to my unease. I gripped my gate pass and training form firmly, trying to keep the papers from rustling too much.

"Britney Preston." I almost jumped when I suddenly heard my name.

Without hesitating or wasting any time, I rushed forward. The chubby lady scrutinized my forms, her eyes scanning through the pages with curiosity. Then she looked up at me, her gaze navigating my face and body, with a discerning intensity.

I felt a slight flutter in my chest as she seemed to take in every detail, her expression unreadable. Her eyes lingered on my face as if searching for something. I straightened my posture, trying to appear confident but her piercing gaze made me feel like an open book.

After what felt like eternity, she nodded curtly and stamped my forms with a resounding thud.

"Up ahead," She said, her voce loud and firm with a hint of dismissiveness.

I immediately turned towards the gates, my feet carrying me forward like a robot. I almost breathed a sigh of relief as I walked through the entrance. But then, like a splash of cold water, reality hit me.

"Shit, I almost forgot." I muttered to myself.

"I might actually come across Alpha Jordyn. The thought of it made my heart sink in my chest and another wave of unease washed over me. My imagination was running wild with the possibilities. What if he's here? What if he sees me? What if..

I frantically scanned the crowded area, my eyes darting wildly as I searched for a refuge, I just needed a place to conceal myself.

I quickly spotted a cluster of chairs under a rustic tavern-like canopy. I hastened towards them, my feet carrying me with a sense of urgency.

I collapsed into one of the chairs, trying to blend in, to become invisible, I had my eyes on the ground as I tried to calm my racing thoughts.

"HI," a high-pitched feminine voice suddenly spoke beside me, making me shriek from shock and surprise.

"Oh, easy, did I scare you?" She asked with a soothing smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

"No really." I replied, after balancing my shaky breath. She looked at me, her eyes a color I had never seen before. It was quite obvious she had a special wolf, one that set her apart from the others

"You're new." she stated with a firm but gentle voice. I gulped, nodding curtly.

"What are you here for?" She asked again. Her eyes narrowed slightly as if probing for a hidden answer. What am I here for? What does she mean? Confusion etched on my face. Isn't everybody here for combat training?

"To train.." I said, but it sounded more like a question.

She chuckled. A warm throaty sound that put me at ease.

"There is something you should know," She said, her voice calm but mysterious. "Not everyone is here to get stronger." She added. "See those people over there?" She nodded towards a group of individuals who sat together.

"Stay away from them." She warned, her voice was low but there was a hint of seriousness. Her warning only left me more confused.

"But why?" I asked her, my curiosity piqued.

"Like I said, some people are not here to train." Her voice dripped with mystery. "Those people over there are here to control their wolves." she revealed.

Control their wolves?!

The lady stood up and walked away, leaving me with more questions than answers. I decided to follow her, curious about what she had just said. Control their wolves? Some people couldn't control their wolves?

She led me to a secluded area, where a group of people were gathered, their eyes fixed on something in the center.

"What's going on?" I asked, trying to get a better look.

"Its a demonstration," she replied. "Of what our wolves can do."

As I watched, two huge men stepped forward, their eyes flashing yellow. They transformed into their wolves, sleek and powerful, and immediately charged toward each other, clawing each other's fur as they fought.

"That's how we train. Whoever wins chooses the next fighter." The lady spoke again. Wait...WHAT?!! That's how we're supposed to train? We are supposed to train with our wolves? Is that even considered training? What about the people without their wolves? Like...me...

As I pondered on my thoughts, a loud growl snapped me back to reality. I turned my attention to the fighting ring, where one of the wolves had been thrown to the ground, limping and badly injured, The wolf's fur was matted with dirt and blood and its eyes seemed to beg for mercy.

I winced, feeling a ray of sympathy. This would have been illegal if wolves didn't heal quickly.

The winner who had transformed back into his human form, let out a growl, beating his chest with his fist in a frenzied display of victory. He looked around the crowd, scrutinizing everyone.

From what I understand so far, he'll be picking the next.. "You!!" His loud voice echoed in the open space. His bloodshot eyes were locked on.. ME?!!

I looked around, hoping that he was pointing at someone behind e, but there was no one there. I felt a cold sweat trickle down my spine, I couldn't help but tremble. Why was he singling me out? This has got to be a dream.
