Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: end

Friday morning at OrionTech was supposed to be like any other coffee-fueled meetings, late emails, and people already mentally checked out for the weekend. But that day was different.

Something was in the air.

Whispers traveled faster than the internal Slack messages. The CEO was rumored to be in the building. Not just in the boardroom. Not in a high-floor glass office. Walking around. On the actual work floors.

Evelyn tried to ignore the chatter.

"I swear I saw him in the breakroom," someone muttered as she passed.

"Maybe he's checking on us before the big Q4 restructure," said another.

Evelyn shook her head. "He's probably just bored. Or making sure his gold-plated office chair still spins."

A laugh beside her made her turn. Ryan still in his carefully crafted disguise of a humble, underpaid intern walked alongside her, amusement on his face but tension in his eyes.

"You're not afraid of him?" he asked lightly.

"I don't believe in being afraid of people just because they have a title. Respect is earned."

Ryan nodded slowly. "I think you're right."

That afternoon, Evelyn and Ryan took their lunch up to the rooftop garden, the quiet corner of the building where most employees rarely went. It had become their secret escape over the last few weeks a place for conversation that didn't feel like it belonged to the corporate world.

Evelyn took a long sip of her iced tea and looked at him. "Okay, be honest. What's your story?"

Ryan blinked. "What do you mean?"

"You don't talk about your past. You're smart, thoughtful… but there's a wall around you. Why?"

Ryan hesitated.

He could lie again.

He could change the subject. Deflect. Joke.

But he was tired.

Tired of the dual life. Tired of loving someone while hiding such a massive part of himself.

"I didn't come here to be an intern," he said quietly.

Evelyn looked up.

"I came here to understand my company… from the inside. Not as a CEO looking down, but as a human being, among others."

Her eyes narrowed. "Wait. Your company?"

He stood slowly, stepping away from the bench, and pulled his phone from his pocket.

On the screen was an old press photo one she'd seen before of Ronan Blake, the reclusive CEO of OrionTech. Except now, standing in front of her, the resemblance was undeniable.

Her jaw tightened. "You're him."

Ryan nodded. "My real name is Ronan. Ronan Blake."

Evelyn stood, shock and betrayal flashing across her face. "So… everything? The stories? The job hunting? All of it was fake?"

"No," he said quickly. "Not all of it. The position was fake, yes. But the conversations, the feelings, everything I've shared with you that was real. You are real to me."

She turned away from him, breathing hard.

"I don't even know who you are."

"I'm the man who started losing faith in himself. Who didn't like what he saw in the mirror anymore. I needed to be reminded why I started this company in the first place. I didn't expect to find you."

She said nothing.

"I lied," he admitted. "I shouldn't have. But I wanted you to like me for who I am underneath the title."

"I did," she whispered, still facing away.

He stepped closer. "And now you know the truth. You can walk away, Evelyn. I'll understand."

She turned to face him, anger and sadness blending in her eyes.

"You want to know what hurts?" she asked.

He nodded.

"I trusted you. And it's not just about your job or your title. It's that you didn't trust me enough to be honest."

He opened his mouth, but she held up her hand.

"I get why you did it. I really do. But trust goes both ways."

Silence fell between them.

The wind picked up, brushing hair across her face.

He looked at her, vulnerable and raw. "Is there any chance... you could give me a second shot?"

Evelyn looked away for a long moment. Then finally, she let out a breath that felt like she'd been holding it for days.

"I need time," she said. "But… I'm not walking away."

Ronan's heart lifted.

"That's more than I hoped for," he said quietly.

The days that followed were… strange.

News broke across the company. Ronan Blake had gone undercover as an intern.

Some employees felt betrayed. Some thought it was brilliant. Others joked he must have been trying to find out who really cleaned the coffee machine.

The board wasn't thrilled. PR had to spin it as a "leadership empathy initiative."

But most of the team especially those on the lower levels started looking at him differently.

He showed up at meetings without a tie.

He listened more than he spoke.

He started implementing feedback from the interns he once shared a desk with.

And slowly, OrionTech began to shift.

One month later…

Ronan stood in front of the rooftop garden again. The sun was setting behind the skyline, casting the city in hues of gold and blush.

He adjusted his blazer no longer trying to hide who he was but still nervously checking his watch.

Evelyn stepped out onto the rooftop.

She was dressed in her usual practical style no pretense, no polish for anyone but herself. And to him, she looked more stunning than anyone in a red-carpet gown.

"You're late," he teased.

"You're lucky I showed up."

He grinned. "True."

They stood together for a moment, watching the sky.

"I didn't think you'd forgive me," he said.

"I almost didn't."

"What changed?"

She turned to him. "You did."

He looked at her.

"You stopped hiding. You stopped playing games. You became the man I hoped you were when we met."

He stepped closer. "And what do you see now?"

"I see someone who knows what matters."

He swallowed hard.

"I love you, Evelyn."

She smiled. "I know."

"And if you'll let me, I'd like to make sure you never doubt that again."

Her eyes softened. "Then stop asking for permission."

He kissed her again—this time not in the shadows of lies or fear, but in the light of everything they'd survived.

And when they broke apart, the city hummed quietly beneath them, but up there, it was just them.

No CEO.

No employee.

Just Ronan and Evelyn.

Just two people who found something real in the most unexpected way.
