In for more trouble
Jasmine's POV
I gestured to Scarlett not to say a word. Then I grabbed the pot and she opened the door. Immediately she opened the door, I lifted the pot and slammed it on the head of the man outside. His body fell straight to the ground with a thud.
"Is he dead?" Scarlett asked.
"Let me check" quietly dropping the pot, I stooped to check if he was still breathing. I senses hid pulse but it was slow. Phew! Glad I didn't kill anyone.
"He's still alive" I said. The boots thumping from up reminded me of where I was.
"Come on let's keep going" we ran. It was difficult. Running fast and the same time running so as not to be heard. How can one do both?
The night air scorched in my lungs as I ran, my bare feet slapping against the cold marble floors. I had told Scarlett to take off her shoes. Easy running. Running without a sound.
Behind me, Scarlett's breath came in short, panicked gasps, her hand gripping mine so tightly it felt like she might break my fingers. They were wet and slick. If we ran faster, I could let go.
Suddenly we could heat echoes of thumping hurried footsteps getting closer. Growing louder with each passing second. The guards were coming.
"They know," she whispered. Her voice trembling.
"We have to go faster." I replied.
What If they caught us? No, I shouldn't think about that. Suddenly I felt like we should hide.
I tugged Scarlett forward, and we dashed into a corner. I pressing my back against the wall as I dragged her with me. I put my hand on my mouth and she nodded.
My heart hammered in my chest. My body slick from sweat. With how reckless my heart was beating and how fast my chest rising and falling, I was scared they could hear.
Torches flashed along the walls, casting a shades that felt alive. It was like it was waiting to consume us. I held my breath.
"There! They went that way!" They went the other way, I stood there and sighted a gate.
"That's the entrance the maids use when they come back late to the palace" Scarlett interrupted my thoughts as if reading my mind. That was the way we can leave this palace.
I turned to Scarlett, now I want you to focus and run okay" she nodded quickly. Her eyes were already swollen from crying. I had immense pity on her.
"Okay" I whispered. "On my count, I, 2, 3, Go" Scarlett and I leapt out of there and headed straight for the gate. As we ran, we didn't look back.
As we ran Scarlett tripped beside me, and I caught her before she could reach the floor but she had already stubbed her ankle, Blood smeared her ankle, there was a cut. A deep one.
"We're almost there," I hissed, more to myself than her.
Suddenly the lights in the garden around us was lit.
No. no. no.
We would be seen. It was just matter of time. Then there it came. Some rush of footsteps. A barked order. The scrape of swords being drawn from their sheaths.
"We're not going to make it your highness" Scarlett breathed, her fingers digging into my wrist. By now she was already limping.
"Yes, we are," I shot back, dragging her through the last hallway, pushing through. She was heavy to hold. I wonder what would have happened if I decided to carry her. This time we were a few minutes away from the gate when a sharp whistle cut through the air. Then there was a gunshot in the air,
Scarlett screamed. The lights at the gate was immediately on and there they saw us.
"There they are!"
Scarlett pulled the gate and it opened. S eh walked out of the gate and I followed suit. Locking the gate as I passed.
Scarlett gasped. We were met with a ground filled with broken bottles.
"Your highness" she cried.
I took in a deep breath. We were already out. All we had to do is hide and then we can go home. With that hope of hoping home, I had strength from nowhere.
"Get on my back"
"But you are not wearing anything either" Scarlett turned.
"Scarlett" I said in gritted.
"Okay your highness" she sobbed
I carried Scarlett and closed my eyes. I took in a deep breath. For family. And then I began to run. My legs were on fire as I ran. With each step I took, pain pierced through my feet and made me wish I was I had a healing power. Blood pooled at my feet.
2 minutes later, I had passed buy and we were on the bare ground. I dropped Scarlett and I scanned the place for something to slow the guards down. Any mother now they would soon be here. I had an idea.
"Scarlett?
"Your highness" she croaked
"Now I want you to do something? She looked at me. She was crying.
Run," I ordered.
"Your highness—
"Don't stop." I continued.
"No," she choked.
Then I shoved her toward the trees and turned around. I took in a deep berth and crouched to the floor. Instantly I transitioned. I turned around and began to shove trees and big logs to the gate. I could see their flash lights and immediately transitioned back. I turned around and began to run. I got to a road that were like a Y. I didn't know where Scarlett had taken, so I took the rough road on my left.
Where was scar—
"Aargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I fell into a ditch. I tried to stand but it felt like I had been glued or something. Like in a spider's web.
"Let me out! Let me out!" I kicked and pushed. Then a hand came up from behind and held my mouth shut. I kicked and pushed but it was all useless. I was no match.
At some point, I stopped fighting and my eyelids threatened a shut down, but just before my brain bowed to all that pressure, my mind registered one thing.
I had just been captured.
