Chapter 19 - Match Point

Meilin's POV

I hadn't planned to come.

Seriously, I hadn't.

But somehow I found myself standing at the edge of the university's football field, tucked in with a bunch of loud, excited students—most of whom were definitely not here for the game. Everyone was whispering, eyes darting between me and the field.

And of course, I was wearing red.

Not on purpose! It was just the only clean top I had this morning. But guess what color Theo's jersey was?

Red.

Now people were whispering louder.

"She's matching him."

"Do you think that's his shirt?"

"No way. But look at how he keeps looking over here."

And he was.

Theo hadn't stopped glancing my way since the warm-up. Even now, halfway through the first half, his blue eyes kept flicking over to me like I was some kind of lucky charm. Every time he scored—or tackled or sprinted—his gaze would search for me again.

I pretended not to notice. My heart was doing backflips.

The whistle blew.

Break time.

Theo jogged straight toward me, ignoring the water his teammates handed him. His hair was damp, sticking to his forehead, and sweat made his tattoos gleam under the sun.

Before I could say a word, he reached for the water bottle in my hand—my water bottle—and took a long swig.

"Hey—!"

He handed it back and smirked.

"You're matching me," he said, like it was a crime. "Trying to make me distracted?"

"You wish."

He grinned wider. Then, before I could take another step back, he pinched my cheek—hard.

"Wha—hey!"

"You're sweating." His voice dropped, deep and low. "Are you hot, sunshine?"

I scowled. "It's literally 30 degrees, Theo. And don't call me that."

"You're cute when you're grumpy." He tilted his head. "Don't leave, yeah? I play better when you're here."

Then he winked.

And jogged back onto the field like he hadn't just made my heart completely melt.

From behind me, someone gasped. "I told you she's his girl."

And maybe, just maybe…

I didn't mind the sound of that.
