Cherreads

Chapter 9 - 9

After Avery went to the bathroom, she came out and used her invisibility power.

She saw those two annoying people still waiting nearby.

So she walked out in the opposite direction. Her invisibility was still at the beginner level and wouldn't last long, so she walked quickly.

A few minutes later, she entered a small alley. She looked around to make sure there were no surveillance cameras before becoming visible again.

After walking around for a while, she went to a gold store. She saw that the gold here was sold at just over 460 per gram.

"Do you buy gold here?"

Avery had never bought anything before, so she didn't know if these places would accept other people's gold.

"We offer trade-ins. You can exchange old items for new ones by paying a processing fee. You can see if there's any style you like."

The clerk heard that she wanted to sell gold and tried to persuade her to exchange it instead.

"I'm not here to trade. I don't have money, so I want to sell these pieces of jewelry. See if you want them or not."

Avery didn't take out gold bars or bricks. Instead, she pulled out two large gold bangles, a thick gold chain, and two big gold rings.

None of them had any brand markings. After all, the two worlds had different brands, and marked ones would be hard to explain.

"Wow, that's a lot! Please wait, I'll call our manager."

Seeing so much gold, the clerk rushed to get the manager. It was too much for her to handle.

Soon the manager came out and was also surprised by the amount.

"Young lady, are you sure you bought all of these? We can't accept anything that's not legally obtained."

He picked up each item to inspect. The gold chain and bangles were heavy, and so were the two rings. They all seemed to be solid gold.

"Don't worry, they're definitely not stolen or robbed. Here's my ID. If there's any issue, I'll take responsibility.

But tell me how much you'll offer. If it's too low, I won't sell."

Even though she had never done business before, Avery wasn't going to let them cheat her. She wanted to test their offer.

"As long as your items are legal, we won't shortchange you. You can ask anywhere, and you'll get the same rate.

As you can see, we sell jewelry at 460 per gram.

But we deduct 40 for processing, so we'll give you 420 per gram.

Once we verify everything, we'll pay you based on the total weight."

The manager was offering a fair market price. As a major brand, they couldn't risk their reputation over a small deal.

"Alright, weigh it then. Let's see how heavy it is."

Avery had no idea how much it weighed. She had just picked the heaviest pieces.

"Okay, but after weighing, we still need to test the gold."

The manager placed all the pieces on the scale. When he saw the number, he took a sharp breath.

In all his years as a manager, he had never seen such a thick gold chain and such big bangles.

It wasn't that they couldn't afford it, but there was simply no need to make jewelry that large.

Altogether, it weighed nearly 800 grams. It was 200 grams more than he had estimated.

"Miss, remember this number, 798. Now we'll test the gold. If it's all real, we'll pay you right away."

The manager was only surprised for a moment before regaining his composure.

"Okay."

Avery wasn't afraid of them playing tricks.

After a short wait, the manager finished testing.

"Miss, the total is 335,160. Please give me your bank card. I'll transfer the money directly into it. It's too much cash, and we don't have that much available here."

The manager finished calculating and was ready to transfer the money. Completing this transaction would also earn him a decent commission.

"I need cash. Find a way. I'll wait here. If you can't do it, I'll just go sell somewhere else."

Avery gave him no chance to refuse. If he wanted the goods, he needed to bring the cash.

She didn't even have a bank card right now. All she had were her ID card, household registration booklet, a letter of severance, and the backpack full of books she carried.

"Alright, then wait here for a bit."

Seeing her insistence, the manager had no choice but to go to the nearby bank to withdraw the cash, leaving others to keep watch.

Not long after, Avery received the over 300,000 in cash. She packed it in a bag and walked out.

"Not having a bank card is really inconvenient. It's not that heavy, but I'm afraid I might lose it."

She weighed the money in her hands. It must've been several kilos.

She immediately went to the bank next door and opened an account.

By the time everything was done, it was already past 4 in the afternoon.

She quickly went shopping for some clothes and daily essentials, then took a cab to the area near her school.

It was already dark. After walking around all day, she was tired, so she casually found a hotel to stay in.

As night fell, neon lights flickered, lighting up the city's sky and adding a certain charm to the night.

Though the night view was beautiful, Avery didn't feel like going out anymore. After a bath, she lay down and went straight to sleep.

Finally, she didn't have to sleep with one eye open anymore. She slept soundly through the night.

The next morning, Avery woke up, washed up quickly, and went down for breakfast. It was Monday, time for school.

Back in her old world, she had never attended college. She had always looked forward to it.

She wanted to experience what college life was like. Now she finally could, and she was happy about it.

After breakfast, she went to her classroom following the original owner's memory.

"Avery, I heard you got kicked out. Why are you still coming to class?

Shouldn't you be looking for a job now? Do you even have the money to keep studying?"

Marga threw a crumpled piece of paper at her. She had already heard from Rose yesterday that Avery had been kicked out by the Lu family.

"You're not my mom, and definitely not my grandma. Whether I come to class or not is none of your business."

Avery looked at her desk and chair. Seriously? How could desks and chairs in college be this dirty?

Her desk was full of trash, and the chair was covered in random scribbles.

"Avery, you'd better watch your mouth. Without the Lu family backing you now, you're just a stray dog. Anyone can step on you. So you'd better keep a low profile."

Marga, annoyed by her attitude, threw another paper ball at her.

Avery tilted her head slightly and easily dodged it.

"I said you're not my mom or my grandma. Was that wrong?

Or do you think I said something wrong? Should I call you grandma now?"

Pfft… cough… haha…

In that moment, the class burst into a mix of coughing and laughter.
